  • Civil structures may experience progressive deterioration and damage under environmental and operational conditions over their service life. Finite element (FE) model updating method is one of the most important approaches for damage identification in structures due to its capabilities in structural health monitoring. Although various damage detection approaches have been investigated on structures, there are limited studies on large-sized space structures. Thus, this paper aims to investigate the applicability and efficiency of sensitivity-based FE model updating framework for damage identification in large space structures from a distinct point of view. This framework facilitates modeling and model updating in large and geometric complicated space structures. Considering sensitivity-based FE model updating and vibration measurements, the discrepancy between acceleration response data in real damaged structure and hypothetical damaged structure have been minimized through adjusting the updating parameters. The feasibility and efficiency of the above-mentioned approach for damage identification has finally been demonstrated with two numerical examples: a flat double layer grid and a double layer diamatic dome. According to the results, this method can detect, localize, and quantify damages in large-scaled space structures very accurately which is robust to noisy data. Also, requiring a remarkably small number of iterations to converge, typically less than four, demonstrates the computational efficiency of this method.

  • As people's living standards and cultural standards have developed, interest in culture and art has increased, and the demand for large space structures where people can enjoy art, music, and sports has increased. As it accommodates a large number of personnel, it is most important to ensure safety of large spatial structures, and can be used as a space where people can evacuate in case of a disaster. Large spatial structures should be prepared for earthquake loads rather than wind loads. In addition to damage to the structure due to earthquakes, there are cases in which it was not utilized as a space for evacuation due to the fall of objects installed on top of the structure. Therefore, in this study, the dome-shaped large spatial structure is generalized and the displacement response according to the number of installations, position and mass is analyzed using a tuned mass damper(TMD) that is representative vibration control device.

  • Complex and large lattice type structures are frequently used in design of bridge, tower, crane and aerospace structures. In general, in order to analyze these structures we have used the finite element method(FEM). This method is the most widely used and powerful method for structural analysis lately. However, it is necessary to use a large amount of computer memory and computational time because the FEM requires many degrees of freedom for solving dynamic problems exactly for these complex and large structures. For analyzing these structures on a personal computer, the authors developed the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM). This method is based on the concept of the transfer of the nodal dynamic stiffness coefficient matrix which is related to force and displacement vector at each node. And we suggested TSCM for free vibration analysis of complex and large lattice type structures in the previous report. In this paper, we formulate forced vibration analysis algorithm for complex and large lattice type structures using extened TSCM. And we confirmed the validity of TSCM through computational results by the FEM and TSCM, and experimental results for lattice type structures with harmonic excitation.

  • Recently, the demand of the large span structures has been increasing. The large span structures include such a large scaled structures such as: the shell structure, the space frame structure, the membrane structure and the cable structure, etc. The large span structures are supposed to be confirmed and issued carefully at the initial process of the design besides the construction engineering aspects because of the structural specific cause that should solve and accomodate those large and wide space without columns. In the field of the large span structure construction, the erection construction method has been regarded as a major affected aspects on the construction cost, construction term, and stability. In the field of the large span structure construction, there are various construction method and system could be applied depends on the condition of the construction site and other circumstances such a major construction method as: the element method, the block method, the sliding method, the lift-up method and complexed method, etc. In this study, as the case study of the erection construction method of the large span structures, after survey and study that those existing large span structures construction cases which had applied and adopted the election construction method and analysis and classify into the Uoups by the size, span, ceiling height, structural system in odor to supply and suggest the data for the enhancement and development in the field of the erection construction method as a efficient structural solution of the large span structure construction.

  • Due to the large volume and generally as a public building, the damage of large-span space structures under various non-conventional loads will cause greater economic losses, casualties, and social impacts, etc. Therefore, it is particularly important to evaluate the seismic performance of large-span space structures. This paper taked a multipurpose sports center as an example and considered its synergistic deformation based on the method of equivalent damping ratio. Furthermore, The ABAQUS software was used to analyze the time-history and energy response of the multipurpose sports center under the action of rare earthquakes, and proposed a quantitative damage index to assess the overall damage of the structure. Finally, the research results indicated that the maximum inter-story drift ratio of the multipurpose sports center under the action of rare earthquakes was less than its limit value. The frame beams presented different degrees of damage, but the key members were basically in an elastic state. The bearing capacity did not reach the limit value, which satisfied the intended seismic performance target. This study taked an actual case as an example and proposed a relevant damage evaluation system, which provided some reference for the analysis of the seismic performance of large-span space structures.

  • Large spatial structures have the different dynamic characteristics from general rahmen structures and many studies on dynamic behavior of it is conducted. But most studies was conducted about the particular shape of large spatial structures and, directly, the usable results of studies are very limited for seismic design of large spatial structures with the lower structure. So, this study is conducted about the truss arch structure that the basic dynamic characteristics of large spatial structure is inherent in, and the change of its seismic response is analyzed when columns have different length on both ends of it. According to the difference of column's length on both ends, the vertical acceleration response of truss arch structure is affected more than the horizontal acceleration response of it. Therefore, when the stiffness of lower structures that support the upper structure is different, the consideration of the vertical response is significantly required for the seismic design of large spatial structures.

  • Since large space structures(LSS) such as a space station, a solar power station satellite, etc., are theoretically distributed parameter and infinite-dimensional system, they have to be modeled into large finite-dimensional systems for control system design. Besides, there are fundamental problems in active vibration control of the large flexible structures. For example, a modeled large finite-dimensional system must be controlled with a much smaller dimensional controller. This causes the spillover phenomenon which degrades the control performances and reduces the stability margin. Furthermore, it may destabilize the entire feedback control system. In this paper, we proposed a novel control method for spillover suppression in the control of large flexible structures by using eigenstructure assignment. Its effectiveness in spillover suppression is investigated and verified by the numerical experiments using an example of the simply supported flexible beam which is modeled to have four controlled modes and eight uncontrolled modes.

  • This study examines experimentally and theoretically, the wave deformation by two large cylindrical structure in relation to the case of one structure. The wave height around the structures varies, according to the changes of the incident wave angles, the number of the structure, and the distances between the two structures. The wave deformation around the large cylindrical structures is shown to be well predicted theoretically by the diffraction theory based on the singular point distribution method using a vertical line wave source Green's function.

  • Large spatial structures can not easily predict the dynamic behavior due to the lack of construction and design practices. The spatial structures are generally analyzed through the numerical simulation and experimental test in order to investigate the seismic response of large spatial structures. In the case of analysis for seismic response of large spatial structure, the many studies by the numerical analysis was carried out, researches by the shaking table test are very rare. In this study, a shaking table test of a small-scale arch structure was conducted and the dynamic characteristics of arch structure are analyzed. And the dynamic characteristics of arch structures are investigated according to the various column cross-section and length. It is found that the natural vibration periods of the small-scaled arch structure that have large column stiffness are very similar to the natural vibration period of the non-column arch structure. And in case of arch structure with large column stiffness, primary natural frequency period by numerical analysis is very similar to the primary natural frequency period of by shaking table test. These are because the dynamic characteristics of the roof structure are affected by the column stiffness of the spatial structure.
