  • To eliminate some difficulties encountered in the operation of $LiNbO_3$ crystal as a Q-switch for generating a single pulse Nd-YAG laser, the operational characteristics of the crystal, was investigated. Also a simple method for solving the difficulties was presented.

  • An autonomous vehicle requires a technology of generating maps by recognizing surrounding environment. The recognition of the vehicle's environment can be achieved by using distance information from a 2D laser scanner and color information from a camera. Such sensor information is used to generate 2D or 3D maps. A 2D map is used mostly for generating routs, because it contains information only about a section. In contrast, a 3D map involves height values also, and therefore can be used not only for generating routs but also for finding out vehicle accessible space. Nevertheless, an autonomous vehicle using 3D maps has difficulty in recognizing environment in real time. Accordingly, this paper proposes the technology for generating 2D maps that guarantee real-time recognition. The proposed technology uses only the color information obtained by removing height values from 3D maps generated based on the fusion of 2D laser scanner and camera data.

Rigorous Analysis on Ring-Doped-Core Fibers for Generating Cylindrical Vector Beams

  • We propose a novel active fiber design for selectively generating cylindrical vector beams (CVBs) or cylindrical vector modes (CVMs) which can be applied to conventional fiber lasers. A fiber is designed to have a ring-shaped core refractive index profile which can lead to the best overlap between the active dopant distribution profile and the lowest-order CVM (LCVM) field profile. Therefore, the overlap factor (OVF) of the LCVM becomes even higher than that of the fundamental mode. We emphasize that this condition cannot be satisfied by a conventional step-index core fiber (SICF) but by the ring-doped core fiber (RDCF). Because the lasing threshold is inversely proportional to the OVF, the LCVM can predominantly be stimulated even without going through special procedures to impose extra loss mechanisms to the fundamental mode. We numerically verify that the OVF of the LCVM with the doped ions can significantly exceed that of the fundamental mode if the proposed fiber design is applied. In addition, an RDCF of the proposed fiber design can also operate in a regime containing no higher-order modes besides the LCVM, so that it can selectively and efficiently generate the LCVM without being disrupted by the parasitic lasing of the higher-order modes. We highlight that an optimized RDCF can lead to a >30 % higher OVF ratio than a SICF having the same doped area. The proposed model is expected to be useful for enhancing the efficiency of generating CVBs in an all-fiber format.

Process developments for direct manufacturing of metallic prototypes (금속시제품의 신속제작을 위한 공정기술개발)

  • In order to ensure that the prototype corresponds as closely as possible to the serial part subsequently to be manufactured, the materials used for the prototye should, wherever possible, be identical to those used in production. In case of metallic parts, however, this demand is still not completely fulfilled by the available Rapid Prototyping techniques. Since only conventional manufacturing processes caan currentlybe used to produce metallic prototypes directly, these are extremely cost and labor intensive. For this reason, work is being undertaken worldwide to develop Selective Laser Sintering (referred to SLS) and Laser Generating for direct manufacture of metallic parts. In this paper the results of both process developments are reported. As the present results show, they have great application potentials in prototyping tools, especially molds and dies.

  • A hybrid genetic algorithm is proposed for the problem of generating laser torch paths to cut a stock plate nested with free-formed parts each having a set of sub-parts. In the problem, the total unproductive travel distance of the torch is minimized. The problem is shown to be formulated as a special case of the standard travelling salesman problem. The hybrid genetic algorithm for solving the problem is hierarchically structured: First, it uses a genetic algorithm to find the cutting path f3r the parts and then, based on the obtained cutting path, sequence of sub-parts and their piercing locations are optimally determined by using a combined genetic and heuristic algorithms. This process is repeated until any progress in the total unproductive travel distance is not achieved. Computational results are provided to illustrate the validity of the proposed algorithm.

A Hybrid Genetic Algorithm for Generating Cutting Paths of a Laser Torch (레이저 토치의 절단경로 생성을 위한 혼합형 유전알고리즘)

  • The problem of generating torch paths for 2D laser cutting of a stock plate nested with a set of free-formed parts is investigated. The objective is to minimize the total length of the torch path starting from a blown depot, then visiting all the given Parts, and retuning back to the depot. A torch Path consists of the depot and Piercing Points each of which is to be specified for cutting a part. The torch path optimization problem is shown to be formulated as an extended version of the standard travelling salesman problem To solve the problem, a hybrid genetic algorithm is proposed. In order to improve the speed of evolution convergence, the algorithm employs a genetic algorithm for global search and a combination of an optimization technique and a genetic algorithm for local optimization. Traditional genetic operators developed for continuous optimization problems are used to effectively deal with the continuous nature of piercing point positions. Computational results are provided to illustrate the validity of the proposed algorithm.

  • Although laser interferometer measurement system has the advantage of range and accuracy, the traditional error measurement methods for geometric errors(two straightness and three angular errors) of a machine tool measures error components one at a time. It may also create an optical path difference and affect the measurement accuracy. In order to identify and compensate for geometric error of a moving body, an on-line measurement system for simultaneous detection of the five error components of a moving axis is required. An on-line measurement system with 5 degrees of freedom was developed for geometric error detection. Performance verification of the system was performed on an error generating mechanism. Experimental results show the feasibility of this system for identifying geometric errors of a side of machine tool.

  • This paper proposes a method to extract accurate plane of an object in unstructured environment for a humanoid robot by using a laser scanner. By panning and tilting 2D laser scanner installed on the head of a humanoid robot, 3D depth map of unstructured environment is generated. After generating the 3D depth map around a robot, the proposed plane extraction method is applied to the 3D depth map. By using the hierarchical clustering method, points on the same plane are extracted from the point cloud in the 3D depth map. After segmenting the plane from the point cloud, dimensions of the planes are calculated. The accuracy of the extracted plane is evaluated with experimental results, which show the effectiveness of the proposed method to extract planes around a humanoid robot in unstructured environment.

Effect on Tenascin Expression of Low Power Generating Laser Irradiation during Wound Healing Process (저출력 레이저가 창상치유과정에서 Tenascin 발현에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this paper was to observe the influence of Ga-As semiconductor-low power generating laser on she appearance and actions of tenascin, extracellular matrix, as healing process of intentional wound on the experimental animals is taking place. 35 rabbits were divided into control and experimental group. ; and on each, 3mm-long and 2mm-deep, surgical wounds were created on buccal oral mucosa and thoracodorsal portion of skin. Ga-As laser was applied to the experimental group starting a day of the day the wounds were created , the laser was applied for 5 minutes every other day. Tissue samples were taken after the 2, 4, 7, 10, and 14 days after wound formation. Then tile healing process of experimental and control groups were observed and compared, using light microscope. Afterwards, the samples were immunohistochemical stained and again observed tenascin by quantitative measuring. The following results were obtained : 1. Tenascin was observed prevalently on epithelial cells, border area of dermis, and interstitial matrix between connective tissue layers in both experimental and control groups. 2. In oral mucosa, the experimental group showed significant increase in the appearance of tenascin after 4 days compared to the control group, but after 10 days, it decreased to a point which is even less than the control group. 3. In the skin samples, the pattern of appearance of tenascin was the same in both groups, but there was some difference concerning when the peak period was shown, In the experimental group, the peak period of tenascin expression was the 7 days after wound formation in epithelium and connective tissue. In the control group, the peak period was 10 days after. 4. In both the experimental and control groups, tenascin first appeared in the epithelium near the wound area and submucosa, and then spread on the underlying connective tissue. In conclusion, appearance of tenascin is closely related to regeneration of epithelium and development of granulation tissue : therefore, low power laser, which fastnes appearance of tenascin, is sure to faciltate healing process of oral mucosa.

  • In this paper, we have investigated the output characteristics of the Stokes Raman laser in hydrogen, deuterium, and their mixed gases as a function of the incident pump energy and gas pressure using KrF excimer laser as pumping source for generating the differential absorption lidar (DIAL) wavelengths suitable in measuring the ozone concentration of the troposphere. The optimization results of compact excimer-Raman laser transmitter in DIAL system for the tropospheric ozone sounding at the 292 nm/319 m and 292 nm/313 nm wavelength pairs are presented. for the ozone sounding in the 4-12 km range, it has been demonstrated that the design of transmitter for DIAL lidar may be significantly simplified by the use of 292 nm/319 nm wavelength pair. The investigations of Raman scattering in the mixture of hydrogen and deuterium gases have shown that such mixture may be efficiently used for developing the multi- wavelength light sources for DIAL systems.
