  • The keyhole formed by high energy density laser-material interaction periodically collapses due to surface tension of the molten metal in partial penetration welds. The collapse sometimes traps a void at the bottom of the keyhole, and it remains as welding defects. This phenomenon is seen as one cause of the instability of the keyhole during laser beam welding. Thus, it seems likely that improving the stability of the keyhole can reduce voids and uniform the penetration depth. The goal of this work is to develop techniques for controlling laser weld keyhole dynamics to reduce weld defects such as voids and inconsistent penetration. Statistical analysis of the penetration depth signals in glycerin determined that keyhole dynamics are chaotic. The chaotic nature of keyhole fluctuations and the ability of laser power modulation to control them have been demonstrated by high-speed video images of laser welds in glycerin. Additionally, an incident leading beam angle is applied to enhance the stability of the keyhole. The quasi-sinusoidal laser beam power of 400Hz frequency and 15$^{\circ}$ incident leading beam angle were determined to be the optimum parameters for the reduction of voids. Finally, chaos analyses of uncontrolled signals and controlled signals were done to show the effectiveness of modulation on the keyhole dynamics. Three-dimensional phase plots for uncontrolled system and controlled system are produced to demonstrate that the chaotic keyhole dynamics is converted to regular periodic behavior by control methods: power modulation and incident leading beam angle.

  • In the 5xxx series Al-Mg alloy, magnesium addition can increase the strength of aluminum alloy by solid solution strengthening but it has a relatively low melting and boiling temperature. During full -penetration laser welding of the Al-Mg alloys, its low boiling point and high vapor pressure brings about the spiky humping bead on the bottom side. Under back-side shielding, the spiking of back bead can be reduced but it restraints the process flexibility. In this study, a square pulse waveform modulation was employed to stabilize keyhole and back bead surface without back-side shielding. By using an experimental design, the bead shapes were evaluated for various process parameters such as the focal position, welding velocity and waveform parameters and the smooth back bead shape could be achieved.

Furthermore, recent advances in room-temperature, near-IR and visible diode laser sources for telecommunication, optical data storage applications are enabling combustion diagnostics system based on diode laser absorption spectroscopy. So, combined with fiber-optics and high sensitive detection strategies, compact and portable sensor system are now appearing for a variety of applications. The objective of this research is to take advantage of distributed feed-back diode laser and develope new gas sensing system. It experimentally found out that the wavelength, power characteristics as a function of injection current and temperature. • Apophis is a near-Earth object with a diameter of approximately 340 m, which will come closer to the Earth than a geostationary orbit in 2029, offering a unique opportunity for characterizing the object during the upcoming encounter. Therefore, Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute has a plan to propose a space mission to explore the Apophis asteroid using scientific instruments such as a laser altimeter. In this study, we evaluate the performance metrics of a laser altimeter using a pseudorandom noise modulation technique for the Apophis mission, in terms of detection probability and ranging accuracy. The closed-form expression of detection probability is provided using the cross correlation between the received pulse trains and pseudo-random binary sequence. And the new ranging accuracy model using Gaussian error propagation is also derived by considering the sampling rate. The operation range is significantly limited by thermal noise rather than background noise, owing to not only the low power laser but also the avalanche photodiode in the analog mode operation. However, it is demonstrated from the numerical simulation that the laser altimeter can achieve the ranging performance required for a proximity operation mode, which employs commercially available components onboard CubeSat-scale satellites for optical communications.

  • Porosity formation in partial penetration welds by high power lasers is a serious problem in industry. There are two main causes that induce porosity formation. One form of porosity is due to gases (e.g. hydrogen, oxygen) dissolving into the weld pool because of the high temperature and then the rapid solidification traps gases as a bubble in the weld metal. The second problem is voids formed by the keyhole collapsing due to unstable keyhole fluid dynamics. The voids that form at the bottom of the keyhole are relatively large and irregular in shape compared to the gas bubbles; this void formation is the primary concern in this paper. The reduction of voids formed by keyhole collapse is achieved by improving the stability of keyhole. Two methods to improve keyhole stability are discussed in this paper: pulse modulation and beam incident angle. Pulse modulation of the laser beam was performed between 100 Hz and 500 Hz to find out the optimum frequency for the keyhole dynamics. The incident beam angle changed the impact angle of the laser beam to the work surface in a range of 0 to 25 degrees. Glycerin in a semi-solidified state is used as a medium for performing the welding because its transparency allows of visualization of the keyhole.

  • We have proposed and experimentally verified a pulse-width modulation (PWM) generator which directly generated a PWM signal in the optical domain. Output waveforms were clear at the repetition rate of 16 MHz; the duty cycle (DC) was from 14.7% to 72.1%; and the DC-control resolution was about 4.399%/dB. The PWM generator' operation principle is based on the injection-locking property of a single-mode Fabry-$P{\acute{e}}rot$ laser diode (SMFP-LD). The SMFP-LD, which has a self-locked mode wavelength at ${\lambda}_{PWM}$, was used to detect the power of the injection-locking signal (optical analog input). If the analog input power is high, the SMFP-LD is locked to the wavelength of the input signal ${\lambda}_a$ and there is no output after an optical bandpass filter (OBF). If the analog input power is low, the SMFP-LD is unlocked and there is output signal at ${\lambda}_{PWM}$ after the OBF. Thus, the SMFP-LD plus the OBF provide digital output for an analog input. The DC of the output PWM signal can be controlled by tuning the power of the analog input.

  • In this paper, a 12.5-Gb/s optical transmitter is implemented using 0.13-${\mu}m$ CMOS technology. The optical transmitter that we constructed compensates temperature effects of VCSEL (Vertical cavity surface emitting laser) using auto-power control (APC) and auto-modulation control (AMC). An external monitoring photodiode (MPD) detects optical power and modulation. The proposed APC and AMC demonstrate 5$\sim$20-mA of bias-current control and 5$\sim$20-mA of modulation-current control, respectively. To enhance the bandwidth of the optical transmitter, an active feedback amplifier with negative capacitance compensation is exploited. The whole chip consumes only 140.4-mW of DC power at a single 1.8-V supply under the maximum modulation and bias currents, and occupies the area of 1280-${\mu}m$ by 330-${\mu}m$ excluding bonding pads.

  • An external optical modulation using absorption s in a Fabry-Perot laser diode (FP-LD), has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated for multicasting in a WDM-PON. The center wavelengths of absorption s in an FP-LD move to short-wavelength rapidly by only a small current (~1 mA) injection. If the current injection is stopped, the s move back to the original position. Such a movement of the s can make the FP-LD act as an external optical modulator, which is found to modulate at a maximum modulation speed of 800 Mbps or more. For a multicasting transmitter in a WDM-PON, the proposed modulator can be cost-effectively applied to a multi-wavelength laser source with the same periodicity of the longitudinal mode. Instead of the multi-wavelength laser source, tunable-LDs are used for experiments. The 32 channel multicasting system with the proposed modulator has been demonstrated, showing power penalties of 1.53~4.15 dB at a bit error rate of $10^{-9}$ with extinction ratios better than 14.5 dB at 622 Mbps.
