  • This study examined the effects of particle size on the light scattering of a nano-sized color filter pigment used to obtain a range of colors in liquid crystal displays. The contrast ratio is one of the most important characteristics of liquid crystal displays. When a color filter is located between two crossed polarizers, the size of the pigment can give rise to a decrease in the contrast ratio due to Rayleigh scattering by the nanoparticles in the filter. The size effect of the color filter pigment on the contrast ratio was investigated in terms of the depolarization parameter. As an experimental result, the depolarization parameter increased with decreasing pigment size. Therefore, a smaller pigment size can reduce light leakage caused by light scattering in the color filter between two crossed polarizers. The depolarization function was also proposed as a useful function for predicting the decrease in the contrast ratio of the color filter.

  • Currently, most photoluminescence reagents used in forensic science have short stokes shift, making it difficult to observe strong photoluminescence due to scattering light from forensic light sources when using filters that are not shieldable. However interference filters can be observed near monochromatic light, making them a better alternative to absorption filters. To verify practical applicability of interference filters, interference filters and three other types of previously frequently used absorption filters were observed using a variety of light source products, and transmission light was cross-compared. Interference filters have a lower slope value than absorption filters, and selectively show only the photoluminescence of reagents, regardless of the type of product from the forensic light source. In addition, tilting the angle of the filter surface for observation lowered the λcut-on, which could replace various types of absorption filters with a single interference filter.

  • The reduced ratio of red:far-red (R:FR) light acts as a measure of the proximity of competitors and plants can detect the potentially competing neighbor plants by perceiving reflected R:FR signals and initiate the response of “shade avoidance” before actual shading occurs. The phytochrome system is responsible for monitoring the changes in the R:FR and initiating the shade avoidance response. The response to low R:FR ratio was studied in a white aspen Populus alba clone ‘Bolleana’ using two filter systems: a clear plastic filter system that allows a R:FR ratio less than 1.0 to pass from adjacent border plant reflection; and a special commercial plastic that blocks FR light and creates a R:FR ratio above 3.0. The reduced R:FR signals enhanced the stem elongation in response to competition at the expense of relative stem diameter growth. Trees grown inside clear chambers were 27 % taller than trees grown inside the FR-blocking filter chambers. Stem taper of clear chamber trees was 16% less than the FR-blocking filter trees. Low R:FR also induced 22% more stem dry weight and 13% greater petiole length per leaf compared to the FR-blocking filter trees. There were no statistically significant differences in leaf area, leaf number increment, and total dry weight between the two light filter treatments.

  • We examined large particles and filter size effects of Central Chemical Supplying (CCS) system for STI-CMP on Light Point Defects (LPDs) after polishing. As manufacturing process recently gets thinner below 0.1 um line width, it is very important to keep down post-CMP micro-scratch and LPDs in case of STI-CMP. Therefore, we must control the size distribution of large particles in a slurry. With optimization of final filter size, CCS system is one of the solutions for this issue. The oxide and nitride CMP tests were accomplished using nano-ceria slurries made by ourselves. The number of large particles in a slurry and the number of LPDs on the wafer surface after CMP were reduced with decrease of the final filter size. Oxide removal rates slightly changed according to the final filter size, showing the good performance of self-made nano ceria slurries.

  • The exhaust emissions from diesel vehicle are known to be harmful to human health and environment. Recently, one of the most environment problems is particulate matter. In this study, through the actual exper iment and heat transfer of exhaust pipe in light duty diesel engine equipped with the ceramic filter trap of throttling type, following results are obtained. 1. In case of light duty diesel engine equipped with ceramic filter trap of throttling type, Power and torque of engine were decreased about 5%, compared with the case without trap system. It means that was not so much effect on base engine performance.2. If the length of exhaust pipe when equipping with ceramic filter trap is suitably controlled, the range of regeneration will be expand much more.3. Particulate matter reduction efficiency of ceramic filter trap system was about 70%-80%, so it was proved a good system to reduce particulate matter. In experiment, test was conducted to estimate engine emission in 2,476cc light duty diesel engine which was equipped with ceramic filter trap.

  • An experimental outdoor optical wireless data communication system with an optical filter in the presence of sunlight or artificial light is presented. For the efficient blocking of light noise outdoors, we employ an optical filter made of microlouver film on the top of the photo diode. This filter is designed to block any light noise incident from an angle higher than $30^{\circ}$ on the assumption that light noise does not face the photo diode horizontally. Outdoor experiments daytime with the optical filtering have been conducted. The experimental results demonstrate that the optical filter effectively blocks nearly all light noise incident from the specified angle or higher and more than 90% of the transmitted data packets are successfully received. The proposed outdoor visible light data communication can thus facilitate a practical free space outdoor optical wireless data transmission.

  • Spectral resolution enhancement method of Acousto-Optic Tunable Filter (AOTF) using incident light angle variation is described. AOTF is a small, mechanically rigid, high speed and spectral resolution light tunable filter. The basic theory of AOTF and its experimental verification is described. AOTF can generate two opposite polarized light simultaneously which wavelength can be changed by incident angle variation. We focused on the common region of two filtered light at the specific incident angle. This region can be used to enhance the spectral resolution of AOTF.

  • The performance of the facial recognition system is determined by many technical factors. Further, most of the technical factors have been realized or are still in continued research. The recognition rate has a great influence on performance not only by technical factors but also by other factors. However, researchers are trying to improve the recognition rate by focusing only on technical factors. The mechanism of recognizing is to compare a face image obtained by photography to an already stored face image and determine the score of the similarity. However, if the photographed image is damaged by external light, even a system with a good algorithm will fail to recognize it. Therefore, it is important to prevent the disturbance of light entering from the outside, so it should be blocked, but the camera will not work without light. Thus, it is proposed that a method to secure the external light but block the disturbance of light that affects photography. A method of blocking disturbance light is to use a polarization filter. There are three polarization methods: circular polarization, linear polarization, and elliptical polarization. In this paper, an experiment was performed to overcome disturbance of light using only a circularly polarized filter. In addition, a lighting system that reproduces disturbance light was provided for the experiment, and light of varying intensities and angles was installed to affect the face recognition camera. As a result of actual application, it was determined that a very improved recognition performance in various disturbance light environments.

  • Bruise caused by damages through physical compression and suction is one of evidences that can prove abuse or assault. It is essential for taking photography to prove a crime. Some studies about the Infrared (IR) light source have limitations that only one IR light source and one barrier filter were used. To find the best combination of filters and IR light sources, we produced suction bruise artificially and used three IR light sources and five barrier filters. Consequently, we found that the best combination is using a tungsten lamp and Kodak Wratten #18A barrier filter.

  • This paper presents an effective vision based method for LED traffic light detection at the daytime. First, the proposed method calculates horizontal coordinates to set region of interest (ROI) on input sequence images. Second, the proposed uses color segmentation method to extract region of green and red traffic light. Next, to classify traffic light and another noise, shape filter and haar-like feature value are used. Finally, temporal delay filter with weight is applied to remove blinking effect of LED traffic light, and state and weight of traffic light detection are used to classify types of traffic light. For simulations, the proposed method is implemented through Intel Core CPU with 2.80 GHz and 4 GB RAM, and tested on the urban and rural road video. Average detection rate of traffic light is 94.50 % and average recognition rate of traffic type is 90.24 %. Average computing time of the proposed method is 11 ms.
