  • The review of the liquid propellant rocket engine is presented. The combustion instabilities which were discovered on solid and liquid propellant rocket engines in 1930, have occurred on propulsion devices, such as gas turbine, ramjet, scramjet and rocket, and thus a study on the combustion instability became necessary. However, this problem has not been solved yet. Therefore, we investigated causes and mechanisms of the combustion instability and surveyed the efforts of solving combustion instability in various countries for developing stable liquid propellant rocket engines.

  • In order to use the liquid rocket fuel, 1,5-diamino-4-methyltetrazolium azide, [DMT]+[N3]- and 1,5-diamino-4-methyltetrazolium cyanide, [DMT]+[CN]- were synthesized and prepared the ionic liquid rocket fuel after dissolving the synthesized solid-type energetic chemicals in hydrazine, respectively. The thermal decomposition temperatures(Td) and densities(d) of the prepared ionic liquid rocket fuels were about 200 ℃ and above 1.0 g/cm3 respectively. The ignition delay times(Idt) of the ionic liqud rock fuels with [DMT]+[N3]- and [DMT]+[CN]- were in a range of 26.6 - 82.5 ms and the 44.0 - 98.5 ms, respectively. These results mean that the synthesized tetrazolium salts could be used as an ionic liquid rocket fuels. The viscosities of the ionic liqud rock fuels with [DMT]+[N3]- and [DMT]+[CN]-, which were dissolved in mixture solution of hydrazine/2-hydroxyethylhydrazine were to be 1.34 - 101 cP, and 1.29 - 80.5 cP, respectively. The synthesized ionic liquid rocket fuels in this study could be used as rocket fuel because the [Idt(100 ms or less), Td(150 ℃ or more), d(1.00 g/cm3 or more), and η(40.0~ 100 cP)] were achieved to satisfy the range of the used liquid rocket fuels.

  • The development of an underwater rocket propulsion system was described in this paper. Throttle able liquid propellant and hybrid rocket propulsion systems were selected for underwater propulsion. A subscale liquid rocket combustion chamber and it's portable stand were developed and their applicability was examined. 1.5-ton.f and 1.8-ton.f hybrid rockets were developed for underwater applications. The test results indicated that the 18-ton.f hybrid rocket fully complies to the performance and underwater cruise stability requirements; thus, its development was concluded to be successfully complete.

  • As the rocket KSLV-1 called NARO was launched lately, development of domestic rocket technology has been accelerated elastically. Since the rocket technology needs a lot of empirical data, a variety of experiments should be done and lots of time have to be spent for accumulating the foundation of technology. However using a computer can be the solution to close a gap of technique because the simulation can be executed in short time against real experiments and calculate a multiplicity of cases easily. In this research, the transient analysis of turbopump-fed liquid rocket system was worked by the one dimensional modeling. The rocket system consists of the modulized components that are engine, turbopump and so on. For 70 ton class system, the rocket transient process of starting was studied and the performance analysis in steady condition was achieved. In addition, the estimation of nozzle internal flow was investigated by using a nozzle coefficient.

  • The structural analysis of liquid rocket engine was performed in the case of sinusoidal vibration load to verify structural safety. The finite element model is composed with main liquid rocket engine components, combustion chamber, turbopump, gas-generator, pyro-starter, main pipes, main valve, heat-exchanger, gimbal-mount and brackets. Natural vibration mode analysis and structural analysis for sinusoidal vibration load were performed. The natural mode frequency of liquid rocket engine is twice than that of launch vehicle. In the case of stress result of sinusoidal vibration load, the part of maximum stress has 1.4 margin, so the engine structure is safe for sinusoidal vibration load.

  • Liquid rocket propulsion is a system that produces required thrust for satellites and space launch vehicles by using chemical reactions of a liquid fuel and a liquid oxidizer. Monomethylhydrazine/dinitrogen tetroxide, liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen and RP-1/liquid oxygen are typical combinations of liquid propellants commonly used for the liquid rocket propulsion system. The objective of the present study is to investigate useful design and performance data of liquid rocket engine by conducting a numerical analysis of thermochemical reactions of liquid rocket propellants. For this, final products and chemical compositions of three liquid propellant combinations are calculated using equilibrium constants of major elementary equilibrium reactions when reactants remain in chemical equilibrium state after combustion process. In addition, flame temperature and specific impulse are estimated.

  • Aiming at time-dependent performance prediction of Liquid Rocket Engine(LRE) system, Modular Program for Conceptual Design of LRE is reviewed, and a modeling and dynamic analysis of rocket engine system with reference to Rocket Engine Dynamic Simulator(REDS) is outlined. Component modeling is based on classical thermodynamic and inviscid theories, and were formulated mathematically in terms of essential parameters. Essential design parameters are addressed. The rocket engine is modeled as a system of pipes with various hydraulic elements, and then the operate characteristic of that elements are simulated by solving conservation equation sequentially.
