  • In this paper, we propose Babinet-principle-inspired metasurfaces for strong resonant enhancement of local magnetic fields. The metasurfaces are designed as complementary structures of original metasurfaces supporting the local enhancement of electric fields. We show numerically that the complementary structures can support spoof magnetic surface plasmons that induce strong local magnetic fields without sacrificing the deep sub-wavelength-thick nature of the metasurface. By introducing a periodic array of metallic rods in the proximity of the metasurfaces, we demonstrate that a resonant enhancement of the local magnetic fields, more than 80 times the amplitude of an incident magnetic field, can emerge from a resonance of the spoof magnetic surface plasmons.

  • In this paper, a new analytic approach for shape preserving contrast enhancement is presented. Contrast enhancement is achieved by means of segmental histogram stretching modification which preserves the given image shape, not distorting the original shape. After global stretching, the image is partitioned into several level-sets according to threshold condition. The image information of each level-set is represented as typical value based on grouped differential values. The basic property is modified into common local schemes, thereby introducing the enhanced effect through extreme discrimination between subsets. The scheme is based on stretching the histogram of subsets in which the intensity gray levels between connected pixels are approximately same In spite of histogram widening, stretched by local image information, it neither creates nor destroys the original image, thereby preserving image shape and enhancing the contrast. By designing local histogram stretching operations, we can preserve the original shape of level-sets of the image, and also enhance the global intensity. Thus it can hold the main properties of both global and local image schemes, which leads to versatile applications in the field of digital epigraphy.

  • Raman spectra of a single layer graphene sheet placed in different gold substrates were obtained and are discussed in the context of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The gold substrates were composed of a combination of a thermally deposited gold film and a close-packed gold nanosphere layer. The SERS effects were negligible when the excitation wavelength was 514 nm, while the Raman signals were enhanced 3-to 50-fold when the excitation wavelength was 633 nm. The large SERS enhancement accompanied a spectral distortion with appearance of several unidentifiable peaks, as well as enhancement of a broadened D peak. These phenomena are interpreted as the local field enhancement in the nanostructure of the gold substrates. The difference in the enhancement factors among the various gold substrates is explained with a model in which the spatial distribution and polarization of the local field and the orientation of the inserted graphene sheet are considered important.

  • $Ag@SiO_2@SiO_2$(FITC) nanocomposites were prepared by the simple polyol process and St$\ddot{o}$ber method. Fluorescence enhancement of fluorescein moiety (fluorescein isothiocyanate, FITC) was investigated in the presence of silver nanoparticles in $Ag@SiO_2@SiO_2$(FITC) system with varying thickness (X nm) of first silica shell. Maximum enhancement factor of 4.3 fold was achieved in $Ag@SiO_2@SiO_2$(FITC) structure with the first silica shell thickness of 8 nm and the average separation distance of 11 nm between the surface of silver nanoparticle and fluorescein moiety. The enhancement is believed to be originated from increased excitation rate of fluorescein moiety due to concentrated local electromagnetic field which was improved by interaction of light with silver nanoparticles.

  • This paper deals with the prebreakdown phenomena of $SF_{6}$ gap stressed by non-oscillating and oscillating impulse voltages in a strong inhomogeneous field disturbed by a fred needle shaped-protrusion on the earth-side electrode. The breakdown voltage-time characteristics were measured for both positive and negative polarities and over the gas pressure range of 0.1∼0.5 MPa, and the temporal developments of the 77breakdown were observed by a shunt of 50 n. The dependence of the leader stopping time on the gas pressure were obtained. The local field enhancement due to the space charges, which is produced by the streamer corona, has influence with the electrical breakdown of the test gap. The test streamer corona is oxy a necessary condition for the electrical breakdown and the subsequent ionization activities launch the leader at the local field region.

  • The wide dynamic range and severely attenuated contrast in mediastinal area appearing in typical chest radiographs have often caused difficulties in effective visualization and diagnosis of lung diseases. This paper proposes a new adaptive image enhancement technique which potentially solves this problem and there by improves observer performance through image processing. In the proposed method image processing is applied to the chest radiograph with different processing parameters for the lung field and mediastinum adaptively since there are much differences in anatomical and imaging properties between these two regions. To achieve this the chest radiograph is divided into the lung and mediastinum by gray level thresholding using the cumulative histogram and the dynamic range compression and local contrast enhancement are carried out selectively in the mediastinal region. Thereafter a gray scale transformation is performed considering the JND(just noticeable difference) characteristic for effective image displa. The processed images showed apparenty improved contrast in mediastinum and maintained moderate brightness in the lung field. No artifact could be observed. In the visibility evaluation experiment with 5 radiologists the processed images with better visibility was observed for the 5 important anatomical structures in the thorax.

  • In images degraded by bad weather, edges representing object boundaries become weak and faint. In this paper we present an image enhancement method, which increases image visibility by making edges as clear as possible. First, we choose edge candidate regions by finding local maxima and minima in an image intensity field, and then build a histogram using image intensities of pixels located at the two sides of candidate edges. Second, we decompose this histogram into multiple modes, which are determined by local minima in the histogram. Once modes are computed, we find modes connected by edges in the image intensity field and build link chains of connected modes. Finally we choose the longest link chain of modes and make the distances between every connected modes as large as possible. The darkest mode and the brightest mode should be within the image intensity range. This stretch makes edges clear and increases image visibility. Experiments show that the proposed method real-time enhances images degraded by bad weather as good as well known time-consuming methods.

  • Diamonds have been widely employed as polishing media for precise machining and noble substrates for microelectronics. The recent development of the split sphere press has led to the enhancement of low quality natural diamonds. Synthesized and treated diamonds are sometimes traded deceptively as high quality natural diamonds because it is hard to distinguish among these diamonds with conventional gemological characterization method. Therefore, we need to develop a new identification method that is non-destructive, fast, and inexpensive. We proposed using new methods of UV fluorescence and X-ray Lang topography for checking the local HPHT stress field to distinguish these diamonds from natural ones. We observe unique differences in the local stress field images in treated diamonds using UV fluorescence and Lang topography characterization. Our result implies that our proposed methods may be appropriate for identification of the treated diamonds.

  • We present an algorithm for automatic anatomically adaptive image enhancement of digital chest radiographs. Chest images were exposed using digital radiography system with a 0.143 mm pixel pitch, l4-bit gray levels, and 3121 ${\times}$ 3121 matrix size. A chest radiograph was automatically divided into two classes (lung field and mediastinum) by using a maximum likelihood method. Each pixel in an image was processed using fuzzy domain transformation and enhancement of both the dynamic range and local gray level variations. The lung fields were enhanced appropriately to visualize effectively vascular tissue, the bronchus, and lung tissue, etc as well as pneumothorax and other lung diseases at the same time with the desired mediastinum enhancement. A prototype implementation of the algorithm is undergoing trials in the clinical routine of radiology department of major Korean hospital.
