  • Heavy weight of the camouflage materials was always the main problem. To solve it, the low infrared emissivity fibers with the radar absorbing property (LIFR) were prepared. The low infrared emissivity fibers (LIF) were firstly melt-spun by co-extrusion of polypropylene (PP) and PP/various fillers master-batches using general conjugate spinning. The infrared emissivity of LW with AA and ZnO was decreased respectively compared with that of pure polypropylene fibers. The infrared emissivity of LIF with 15 wt% Al and 2 wt% ZnO in the sheath-part can reach 0.58. To improve LIF radar absorbing property, LIFR was prepared by filling the 50 wt% ferrite and bronze in the core-part of LIF. The radar absorbing efficacy of LIFR was good and the infrared emissivity was low. For the characterization, fiber electron intensity instrument and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used for the analysis of mechanical properties, thermal and crystallization behavior of the spun-fibers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was carried out to observe the particle distribution of the bicomponent fibers.

  • Transparent amorphous In-Si-O (ISO)/Ag/In-Si-O (ISO) has been reported for low emissivity (low-e) applications. Effective Si doping into the $In_2O_3$ matrix led to a completely amorphous ISO film as well as a low resistivity and a high optical transmittance. The optical and electrical performances were examined by measuring transmittance with a UV-VIS spectrophotometer and resistivity with a Hall effect measurement. Consequently, low-e glass with ISO/Ag/ISO showed a high transparency in the visible region and low emissivity in the infrared region, indicating that ISO is a promising amorphous transparent electrode for low-e glass.

  • In this study, spatio-temporal variations of Land Surface Emissivity (LSE) of the three LSE data sets in the Asian-Oceanian regions were addressed. The MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LSE, Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) LSE, and Kongju National Univ. (KNU) LSE data sets were used. The three data sets showed very similar emissivity in the Tibetan Plateau, desert in the Middle East and Australia, and low latitude regions irrespective of season. The emissivity of $12{\mu}m$ was systematically greater than that of $11{\mu}m$, in particular, in the Tibetan Plateau, desert over Middle East and Australia. In general, they showed a weak seasonal variation in the low latitude regions although the emissivity was different among them. However, the three data sets showed quite different spatial and temporal variations in the other regions of Asian-Oceanian regions. The KNU LSE showed a systematic seasonal variation with a high emissivity during summer and low emissivity during winter but the other two LSE data sets showed irregular seasonal variations without regard to the regions. And the annual mean correlations of $11{\mu}m$ and $12{\mu}m$ between KNU LSE and MODIS LSE (KNU LSE and CIMSS LSE; MODIS LSE and CIMSS LSE) were 0.423 and 0.399 (0.330, 0.101; 0.541, 0.154), respectively. The relatively low correlations and strong inter-month variations, in particular, in $12{\mu}m$, indicated that consistency in spatial variation was very low. The comparison results showed that caution should be given before operational use of the LSE data sets in these regions.

  • Low emissivity glass for high transparency in the visible range and low emissivity in the IR (infrared) range was fabricated and investigated. The multilayers were have been fabricated, and consisted of two outer oxide layers and a middle layer of Ag as a metal layer. Oxide layers were formed by rf sputtering and metal layers were formed using by an evaporator at room temperature. SiInZnO (SIZO) film was used as an oxide layer. The OMO (oxide-metaloxide) structures of SIZO/Ag/SIZO were analyzed by using transmittance, AFM (atomic force microscopye), and XRD (X-ray diffraction). The OMO multilayer structure was designed to investigate the effect of Ag layer thickness on the optical property of the OMO structure.

  • In order to prevent heat loss that occurs through the glass, low-emissivity (Low-E) coating methods with good insulating properties and high transmittance were used. InGaZnO/Ag/InGaZnO (IGZO/Ag/IGZO) multilayer thin films have been deposited on XG glass substrate by RF magnetron sputtering. Depending on the different thickness of Ag in multilayer films, the structural and optical properties of Low-E multilayer films were analyzed. By XRD analysis results, the multilayer thin films were observed to be amorphous structure regardless of Ag thickness. According to the AFM results, surface morphology of the multilayer films was observed and compared. Using UV-VIS spectroscopy, low emissivity property has been observed clearly with the transmittance of higher than 85% at visible range and lower than 30% at IR range.

  • Procedures for estimation of insulation thickness for a horizontal pipe for condensation control or personnel protection has been investigated, parallel to the previous work of a vertical wall case. Parameters include pipe diameter, emissivity, thermal conductivity, and operating temperatures. The results indicated that the surface emissivity plays a very important role in the design of insulation, specially for the case of high temperature application with low Bi. The effect of surface radiation in such case could be up to 65% of the total. Required insulation thickness for the surface temperature control increases as pipe diameter increases and as surface emissivity decreases. Adequate revision of specifications or standards to include newly invented insulation materials with high emissivity has been also suggested.

  • We analyzed the meteorological and radiation characteristics of Seoul metropolitan area using data from energy flux towers that were installed and operated by the Weather Information Service Engine (WISE). The meteorological and radiation variables included temperature, pressure, wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, surface temperature, rainfall amount, upward and downward solar radiation, upward and downward longwave radiation, albedo and emissivity from 14 energy flux stations located in the Seoul metropolitan area from July 2016 to July 2017. According to the monthly data during the period, the albedo is low and emissivity is high at the Jungnang station in the urban and opposite at Bucheon station in the suburban area. For a station in natural state, the albedo was higher than urban stations because solar radiation reflects effectively. Relatively high temperatures were shown at stations located in urban area with low albedo and high emissivity, in general. However, temperature was high at Gajwa and Ttukseom stations, the albedo was relatively high due to the station environment surrounded by glass wall buildings and the Han river. In the station located in suburban area, both emissivity and temperature were low. Among these stations, Bucheon station had the highest emissivity values because the surface temperature was relatively lower than that of the suburban area. As a result, the albedo decreased and the emissivity increased at stations in urban areas. Additionally, Seoul metropolitan area had less than $100Wm^{-2}$ of net radiation, which implied that radiation energy could be absorbed in the atmosphere.

  • This research was carried out to examine the FIR (far-infrared rays) emissivity and emission power of five Korean wood species for proving wood as an amenity material. Wood turned out excellent as FIR material with 90~91% emissivity in the range of $5{\sim}20{\mu}m$ at $40^{\circ}C$. No difference was identified in the FIR emissivity and emission power between hardwood and softwood, diffuse porous wood and ring porous wood, and high-density wood and low-density wood respectively.

  • This work describes the low-resolution spectral modeling of the water vapor, carbon dioxide and their mixtures by applying the weighted-sum-of-gray-gas-gases model (WSGGM) to each narrow band. Proper modeling scheme of gray gas absorption coefficients vs temperature relation is suggested. Comparison between the modeled emissivity calculated from this relation and the 'true' emissivity obtained from the high temperature statistical narrow band parameters is made for a few typical narrow bands. Low resolution spectral intensities from one-dimensional layers are also obtained and examined for uniform, parabolic and boundary layer type temperature profiles using the obtained WSGGM's with several gray gases. The results are compared with the narrow band spectral intensities obtained by a narrow band model-based code with Curtis-Godson approximation. Good agreement is found between them. Data bases including optimized modeling parameters and total and low-resolution spectral weighting factors are developed for water vapor, carbon dioxide and their mixtures. This model and obtained data bases, available from the authors' Internet site, can be appropriately applied to any radiative transfer equation solver.

  • This paper proposes a method for fabricating heatable glass using the conduction characteristics of metal thin films deposited on the surface of Low-e(Low emissivity) glass. The heating value of Low-e glass depends on the Joule heat caused by Low-e glass sheet resistance. Hence, its prediction and design are possible by measuring the sheet resistance of the material. In this study, silver electrodes were placed at 50 mm intervals on a soft Low-e glass sample with a low emissivity layer of 11 nm. This study measured the sheet resistance using a 4-point probe, predicted the power consumption and heating value of the Low-e glass, and confirmed the heating performance through fabrication and experience. There are two conventional methods for manufacturing heatable glass. One is a method of inserting nichrome heating wire into normal glass, and the other is a method of depositing a conductive transparent thin film on normal glass. The method of inserting nichrome heating wire is excellent in terms of the heating performance, but it damages the transparency of the glass. The method for depositing a conductive transparent thin film is good in terms of transparency, but its practicality is low because of its complicated process. This paper proposes a method for manufacturing heatable glass with the desired heating performance using Low-e glass, which is used mainly to improve the insulation performance of a building. That is by emitting a laser beam to the conductive metal film coated on the entire surface of the Low-e glass. The proposed method is superior in terms of transparency to the conventional method of inserting nichrome heating wire, and the manufacturing process is simpler than the method of depositing a conductive transparent thin film. In addition, the heat characteristics were compared according to the patterning of the surface thin film of the Low-e glass by an emitting laser and the laser output conditions suitable for Low-e glass.
