  • Polyethylene is a typical hydrophobic material and it is difficult to bond the polyethylene material with metal material. Thus, it is important to modify the surface of polyethylene material to improve the bonding strength between the polyethylene and the metal materials. In this study, the surface modification of polyethylene material was investigated to improve the interfacial strength between the polyethylene and the steel materials. Polyethylene material was surface-modified in a plasma cleaner using an oxygen gas. Two cases of composites (surface-modified pelyethylene/steel composite and regular (as-received) pelyethylene/steel composite) were fabricated using a secondary bonding method. Shear and bending tests have been performed using the two cases of composites. The results showed that the contact angle did not change much as the modification time increased. However, the contact angle decreased from ${\sim}76^{\circ}\; to\;{\sim}41^{\circ}$ with the modification. The results also showed that the shear strength and the bending strength were improved about 3030 % and 7 %, respectively when the polyethylene was plasma-modified using an oxygen gas.

  • There have been many difficulties in utilization of polyethylene (PE) container for volatile ingredients because of its high permeability. We selected glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate (PETG) lately being used and evaluated the stability of 0.5% chlorobutanol solution for PETG. We used PE bottle, glass flask and rubber stoppered vial for comparison and assayed chlorobutanol contents of the samples stored at various temperatures for nine weeks by HPLC method. The results indicated that the stability of chlorobutanol in PETG container was almost similar to that in glass flask, and was superior to that in PE bottle and rubber stoppered vial.

  • In this study, thermoplastic starch (TPS), cross-linked starch (CS), and cross-linked starch modified with glycerol (CTPS) were prepared, and the mechanical properties of the compatibilized low-density polyethylene (LDPE) blends (LDPE/TPS, LDPE/CS, and LDPE/CTPS) were investigated and compared with those of uncompatibilized LDPE/TPS, LDPE/CS, and LDPE/CTPS blends. Maleic-anhydride-grafted polyethylene was used as the compatibilizer. The enhanced tensile strength and elongation at break for the compatibilized LDPE/modified starch blends are a result of the improved compatibility between LDPE and the modified starch, which was confirmed by torque measurements and scanning electron microscopy.

  • Sheep hemoglobin (SHb) was modified with methoxy-polyethylene glycol (mPEG) to develop a potential blood substitute. mPEG has been used to decrease antigenicity and immunogenicity of foreign proteins. When the mPEG was attached to SHb, the modified hemoglobins showed decreased electrophoretic mobility on SDS-PAGE and decreased free amino groups. When the remaining free amino groups of mPEG modified SHb were determined by TNBS free amino group titration methods. about 34% of total free amino groups were modified with mPEG. This mPEG-SHb conjugate of 34% amino groups modified showed no precipitation by double immunodiffusion with polyclonal antibodies against SHb. This modified hemoglobin still has oxygen transport activity. So this antigenicity decreased hemoglobin may be used in humans as a potential blood substitute.

  • It is said that polymer modified asphalt using polyethylene as modifier would show phase separation due to density difference and incompatibility between asphalt and polyethylene. In this study, to prevent coalescence of polyethylene in asphalt, we employed peroxides as phase separation inhibitor. On microscope, peroxides (dicumyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide) with waste vinyl (comprising low density polyethylene) did not show phase separation, however, rheometer test showed phase separation at molecular level, i.e., polyethylene and asphalt are immiscible ultimately. Mechanical properties (tensile strength, Marshall stability, dynamic stability) showed waste vinyl-modified asphalts are highly resistant to plastic deformation and these properties are even better than those of Superphalt.

  • Direct thermal lamination of polyethylene film on aluminum plate without using adhesive was tried by modifying their surfaces to have polar groups. Polyethylene film was modified by treating with oxygen or acrylic acid plasma. Aluminum plate was modified by treating with boiling water or diaminocyclohexane plasma. Fairly high adhesion strength was obtained even in the case when only the polyethylene film was modified, and adhesion strength was so high that film was broken during the adhesion test if both the film and the aluminum plate were modified. Even chemical bonding seemed to be possible when the film treated with acrylic acid was laminated on the plate treated with diaminocyclohexane plasma by forming amide linkage through the reaction between COOH groups on the film surface and NH$_2$ groups on the plate surface.

  • Polymer composites are widely used as industrial materials requiring high mechanical properties. Glass fibers and fillers, which are used as a reinforcement in composites, usually have some problems such as nonuniform dispersion and poor interfacial adhesion. In this study, an acrylic acid-modified polyethylene wax was synthesized by the sequential reaction of pyrolysis of polyethylene followed by grafting with a polar acrylic acid. The acrylic acid-modified polyethylene wax was applied to polymer composites of the polyamide matrix and glass fiber reinforcement. The effect of acrylic acid-modified polyethylene wax on physical properties of polyamide based composites was thoroughly investigated.

  • The surface properties of carbon microfibers (CMFs) are modified by chemical deposition of carbon nanofibers via the so-called ethylene processing. CMFs and the modified CMFs (MCMFs) are investigated as reinforcement additives to fabricate polyethylene (PE) composites with enhanced mechanical characteristics. The mechanical properties of the PE-MCMF composites are found to be better and favorable for applications under harsh climatic conditions such as those in Siberia. Improved adhesive interaction between MCMFs and PE is responsible for these enhanced mechanical properties.

  • The modified poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was synthesized by copolymerizing dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol, polyethyleneglycol, and dodecylbenzene sulfonate as a surfactant. After characterization of viscosity, color, and contant angle, hydrophilic characteristics of the modified PET depending on additives was discussed.

  • In this study. we modified the cationic liposomes by polyethylene glycol (PEG)-grafted or PEG-added methods. The PEG-grafted transfection complexes were prepared by adding the plasmid DNA to the PEG-grafted cationic liposomes, composed of PEG and cationic lipids. PEG-added transfection complexes were prepared by adding the PEG to the mixture of cationic lipids and plasmid DNA. The particle sizes of PEG-modified transfection complexes did not change during storage compared to conventional transfection complexes. (omitted)
