  • Ceramic foam prepared with cordierite as a starting material by foam method was tested to evaluate the feasibility as a filter for the dust collection in hot gas. Two different types of agents Benzethonium chloride (BZTC, C27H42NO2Cl) and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate(SLS, CH3(CH2)11OSO3Na) were used as foaming agents in foaming process. Porosityof ceramic foam was about 80% and mean pore size were 100${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for SLS agent and 200 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for BZTC. It was observed that ceramic foam was composed of continuous macro-pore structure with opening windows interconnecting macro-pores. The surface of ceramic foam support of was coated with cordierite particles ranged from 20${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ Meso-pore size in the coating layer on ceramic foam was below 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. While air permeability of the support increased with increasing macro-pore size coated ceramic filters showed a constant permeability without regard to the macro-pore size of the support. The permeabuilities of support varied in the range of 600$\times$10-13m2 to 1000$\times$10-13m2. For the case of coated ceramic filter it was about 200$\times$10-13m2. As a result of particle trapping test by using fly ash the particle removal efficiency was over the 99.9%.

  • This study aimed to conduct the basic analysis on the fractal characteristics of cementitious materials. The pore structure of cement paste incorporating ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) was measured using mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and the fractal characteristics were investigated using different models. Because the pore structure of GGBFS-blended cement paste is an irregular system in the various range from nanometer to millimeter, the characteristics of pore region in the different scale may not be adequately described when the fractal dimension was calculated over the whole scale range. While Zhang and Li model enabled analyzing the fraction dimension of pore structure over the three divided scale ranges of micro, small capillary and macro regions, Ji el al. model refined analysis on the fractal characteristics of micro pore region consisting of micro I region corresponding to gel pores and micro II region corresponding to small capillary pores. As the pore size decreased, both models suggested that the pore surface of micro region became more irregular than macro region and the complexity of pores increased.

  • Micro-porous nickel (Ni) with an open cell structure was fabricated by powder metallurgy. The pore size of the micro-porous Ni approximated $30{\mu}m$ and $150{\mu}m$. For comparison, porous Ni with a macro-porous structure were also prepared by both powder metallurgy (pore size $800{\mu}m$) and the traditional chemical vapour deposition method (pore size $1300{\mu}m$). The mechanical properties of the micro-and macro-porous Ni samples were evaluated using compressive tests. Results indicate that the micro-porous Ni samples exhibited significantly enhanced mechanical properties, compared to those of the macro-porous Ni samples.

  • Macro-porous carbon foams are fabricated using cured spherical phenolic resin particles as a matrix and furfuryl alcohol as a binder through a simple casting molding. Different sizes of the phenolic resin particles from 100-450 ㎛ are used to control the pore size and structure. Ethylene glycol is additionally added as a pore-forming agent and oxalic acid is used as an initiator for polymerization of furfuryl alcohol. The polymerization is performed in two steps; at 80℃ and 200℃ in an ambient atmosphere. The carbonization of the cured body is performed under Nitrogen gas flow (0.8 L/min) at 800℃ for 1 h. Shrinkage rate and residual carbon content are measured by size and weight change after carbonization. The pore structures are observed by both electron and optical microscope and compared with the porosity results achieved by the Archimedes method. The porosity is similar regardless of the size of the phenolic resin particles. On the other hand, the pore size increases in proportion to the phenol resin size, which indicates that the pore structure can be controlled by changing the raw material particle size.

  • Factors causing deterioration of concrete structures under marine environment are various, especially penetration and diffusion of chloride ion, carbon dioxide, and water through pore effects on the durability of concrete as well as mechanical properties of concrete. Pore of porous materials like concrete can be classified as micro-, meso-, and macro-pore. And pore of cement matrix is classified as pore which occupied by water, air void, and ITZ between cement paste and aggregates. In this study, to verify the relationship between pore of cement matrix and the property of chloride ion diffusivity, the regression analysis is producted. From the result of regression analysis, the average pore diameter more than total pore volume effects on the diffusivity of chloride ion.

  • Macroporous ceramics with tailored pore size and shape could be used for well-established and emerging applications, such as molten metal filtration, biomaterial, catalysis, thermal insulation, hot gas filtration and diesel particulate filters. In these applications, unique properties of porous materials were required which could be achieved through the incorporation of macro-pores into ceramics. In this article, we reviewed the main processing techniques which can be used for the fabrication of macroporous ceramics with tailored microstructure. Partial sintering, replica templates, sacrificial fugutives, and direct foaming techniques was described here and compared in terms of microstructures and mechanical properties that could be achieved. The main focus was given to the direct foaming technique which was simple and versatile approach that allowed the fabrication of macro-porous ceramics with tailored features and properties.

  • The characteristics of carbonaceous particles collected from the combustion of Vacuum Residue (VR) in a test furnace have been investigated. The physical and chemical characterization includes particle size, scanning electron microscopy of the surface structure, measurement of porosity, surface area and density, EDX/XRD analyses and measurement of chemical composition. The studies show that the carbonaceous VR particles are very porous and spheroidal, and have many blow-holes on the surface. The particles become smaller and more sponge-like as the reaction proceeds. The present porosity of VR particles is similar to that of cenospheres from the combustion of heavy oil, and the majority of pores are distributed in macro-pores above $0.03\;{\mu}m$ in diameter. Measurements of pore distribution and surface area showed that the macro-pores contributed most to total pore volume, whereas the micro-pores contributed to total surface area.

  • Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) supports and amine additives were investigated to adsorb $CO_2$. PMMA supports were fabricated by using different ratio of pore forming agents (porogen) to control the BET specific surface area, pore volume and distribution. Toluene and xylene are used for porogens. Supported amine sorbents were prepared by wet impregnation of tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) on PMMA supports. So we could identify the effect of the pore structure of supports and the quantity of impregnated TEPA on the adsorption capacity. The increased amount of toluene as pore foaming agent resulted in the decreased average pore diameter and the increased BET surface area. Polymer supports with huge different pore distribution could be fabricated by controlling the ratio of porogen. After impregnation, the support with micropore structure is supposed the pore blocking and filling effect so that it has low $CO_2$ capacity and kinetics due to the difficulty of diffusing. Macropore structure indicates fast adsorption capacity and low influence of amine loading. In case of support with mesopore, it has high performance of adsorption capacity and kinetics. So high surface area and meso-/macro- pore structure is suitable for $CO_2$ capture.

  • The paper presents results of an investigation on the permeability characteristics and pore structure of concrete containing different levels of fly ash, silica fume, or blast furnace slag. The total cementitious content was 351kg/㎥, and the water/cementitious materials ratio was 0.55. The porosity and pore structure of representative pastes of the matrix were measured using mercury intrusion porosimetry, and the permeability characteristics of concrete were also determined by water and oxygen permeability, chloride ion penetration. The results show that significant reduction in permeability of concrete containing pozzolanic materials due to formation of a discontinuous macro-pore system which inhibits flow. And, the permeability of concrete and pore structure(capillary porosity or total porosity) shows linear relationship.
