  • Magnetic levitation systems using the attraction force of electromagnets have many constraints according to the variation of air gap and the nonlinearity of electromagnetic force and inductances. As a result of these constraints, the nonlinear control of a magnetic levitation system has been improved by the latest advanced processors and accurate measurement system which can overcome problems such as many constraints and nonlinearity. This paper concentrates on the modeling of a nonlinear magnetic levitation system and an application of an exponential reaching law based sliding mode controller using the exponential reaching law which is one of the most robust controllers against external unexpected disturbances or parameter fluctuations. Controllability of a magnetic levitation system using the sliding mode control algorithm and robustness against parameter fluctuations have been verified through the experimental results.

  • This study focuses on the performance enhancement of the levitation and guidance control system in urban and medium-to high-speed magnetic levitation trains. A levitation control system, which is currently being tested in Yeongjongdo, is a single controller that is neither designed nor produced on the basis of redundancy. Hence, vehicular stability and reliability should be improved for the situation in which levitation failure occurs because of a breakdown in a controller during vehicle operation. In addition, the control system should be developed to control electromagnetic levitation considering changes in normal force according to changes in the driving force of the propulsion system.

  • Most magnetic bearings are based on the attractive force between the magnets and ferrous materials. One of the disadvantages of such attractive type magnetic bearings is the instability so that an active control device is necessary to operate bearing successfully. In this study a repulsive type magnetic bearing is analyzed which uses eddy current as a force source. The load capacities are analyzed for the various gap sizes, the rotor velocities and the frequencies of current supplied to electromagnet. Analytic Results show that as the gap size decreases, the levitation and drag forces increase, while the number of poles increasqs, the drag force decreases in the higher linear velocity region. Experimental results show that as the gap size decreases the levitation and the drag force increase, and as the velocity of rotor increases, the drag is larger than the levitation force up to certain velocity. But after that, the levitation is larger than the drag force. As the frequency of the current increases the levitation and drag decreases while the thickness of rotor gets thicker the forces decrease because of increase in eddy current loss.

  • In this paper, an advanced teaching-learning based optimization(TLBO) method for the magnetic levitation controller of Maglev transportation system is proposed to optimize the control performances. An attraction-type levitation system is intrinsically unstable and requires a delicate control. It is difficult to completely satisfy the desired performance through the methods using conventional methods and intelligent optimizations. In the paper, we use TLBO and clonal selection algorithm to choose the optimal control parameters for the magnetic levitation controller. To verify the proposed algorithm, we compare control performances of the proposed method with the genetic algorithm and the particle swarm optimization. The simulation results show that the proposed method is more effective than conventional methods.

  • This paper proposes an equipment and an algorithm for modeling the magnetic force of electromagnets in magnetic levitation systems. We assume that the magnetic force model is represented in terms of a 2D lookup table. The 2D lookup table is constructed by applying noncausal filtering and interpolation to data measured by the proposed modeling equipment. The proposed modeling equipment is designed such that it can measure the magnetic force exerted on the levitation object while it changes the voltage applied to the electromagnet and position of the levitation object. The algorithm of making a 2D lookup table has two stages. The data measured by the proposed modeling equipment is smoothed by a noncausal filter and then the 2D lookup table is obtained by interpolating filtered data. The proposed modeling method has advantages of time-saving, model consistency, and chance of automation for mass production. We show the validity of proposed method through control experiments.

  • This paper deals with the characteristic analysis of electro-magnet (EM)-permanent magnet (PM) hybrid levitation and propulsion device for magnetically levitated (maglev) vehicles. Several machine characteristics such as levitation force with/without control current and thrust are described. In order to verify the analysis results and feasibility of high-speed operation of the maglev vehicle, real-scale static test set is implemented and tested.

  • In this paper, a levitation controller for a magnetic levitation(MagLev) system is designed and implemented. The target to be controlled is PEM(permanent and electromagnet) type with 4-corners levitation which is open-loop unstable, highly non-linear and time-varying system. The digital control system consists of a VME-based CPU board, AD board, PU board, 4-Quadrant chopper, and gap sensor, accelerometer as feedback sensors. In order to estimate the velocity of the magnet, we used 2nd-order state observer with acceleration and gap signal as input and output, respectively. Using the estimated states, a state feedback control law for the plant is designed and the feedback gains are selected by using the pole-placement method. The designed controller is experimentally validated by step-type gap reference change and force disturbance test.

  • Output performance improvement using fuzzy logic to the conventional control scheme for a magnetic levitation system is presented in this paper, Adverse characteristics of nonlinearity, unstability, system parameter variation, etc, in the levitation system are partially overcome by the general fuzzy control action. Using a PD type compensator, a coarse framework of output performance is provided to the levitation system. Then a fine regulation to the output performance requirement is obtained by the natural description of the control action in the form of fuzzy logic controller. This control action soothes the adverse characteristics of the levitation system. In this way a better output performance can be obtained in a real time experiment.

  • In this paper, we addressed a modeling for the magnetic levitation stage. This planar magnetic levitator employs four permanent magnet liner motors. Each motor generates vertical force for suspension against gravity, as well as horizontal force for propulsion. Therefore. this stage can generate six degrees of freedom motion by the combination of forces. We derived a mechanical dynamics equation using Lagrangian method and electromechanical dynamics equation by using Co-energy method. Based on the derived dynamics, we can analyze the stage motion that is subject to the input currents and forces.

  • This paper proposes a hybrid-excited linear synchronous motor (LSM) that has potential applications in a magnetically levitated vehicle. The levitation and thrust force characteristics of the LSM are investigated by means of three-dimensional (3-D) numerical electromagnetic FEM calculations and experimental verification. Compared to a conventional LSM with electromagnets, a hybrid-excited LSM can improve levitation force/weight ratios, and reduce the power consumption of the vehicle. Because the two-dimensional (2-D) FE analysis model describes only the center section of the physical device, it cannot express the complex behavior of leakage flux, which this study is able to predicts along with levitation and thrust force characteristics by 3-D FEM calculations. A static force tester for a hybrid-excited LSM has been manufactured and tested in order to verify these predictions. The experimental results confirm the validity of the 3-D FEM calculation scheme for the description of a hybrid-excited LSM.
