This study was conducted to evaluate water quality in the Mankyung River using multivariate analysis. The analysis data which was surveyed from January 1996 to December 2002 in Mankyung river was aquired by the ministry of environment. Twelve water quality parameters were determined on each survey. The results were summarized as follow; Water quality in the Mankyung River could be explained up to 74.90% by four factors which were included in loading of organic matter and nutrients by the tributaries(43.28%), seasonal variation(10.40%), loading of pathogenic bacteria by domestic sewage of Gapcheon (12.41%) and internal metabolism in river(8.81%). The result of cluster analysis by station was classified into three group that has different water quality characteristics. Especially, Iksan river was appeared to considerable water quality characteristics against other station. In monthly cluster analysis, three group was classified by seasonal characteristics. Also, in yearly cluster analysis, three group was classified. It is necessary to control the pollutant loadings by domestic sewage and livestock waste for water quality management of Mankyung river.
Analysis was done on the particle size distribution of sediments flown into Saemangeum from the Mankyung and Dongjin River. The organic pollutants and heavy metal existing in the sediments were analyzed, which was further used to study the properties of pollution in the sediments according to the particle size distribution. Conclusions shown below were made from these analyses. The particle size distribution showed a big difference between the upriver areas of Mankyung and Dongjin River. Particles under $75{\mu}m$ showed to be around 85% at Dongjin River, while it showed to be around 70% at Mankyung River. This kind of distribution in particle size concluded in greatly affecting the contamination density of the sediments. From the analysis done on the soil type of sediments, deposition in Mankyung River categorized into Silty loam and Sandy loam, where Silty loam covered most of area and deposition in Dongjin River categorized into Sand, Loamy sand, Silty loam, Sandy loam. Considering the weight ratio, the density of contamination of the sediments by particle size at Dongjin and Mankyung River has been analyzed to show that organic pollutants and heavy metals occupy more than 70% of the whole contamination in the range under the particle size of $75{\mu}m$.

By the explosive increase of population and industrialization the security of water resources is required, and water resource pollution problem is emerging as a serious social issue. For the ongoing Saemankeum project, lots of efforts are being put together to manage the water quality of the Saemankeum above a certain level, and it is sure that water quality management problem of main inflows from Mankyung River and Dongjin River is very important. Based upon the water quality data of Mankyung River this report examines its correlative characteristics by water quality sampling point factors and the water pollution resource factors, and subjects to provide elementary data for efficient water quality management of Mankyung River.
To estimate the chemical mass balance of several kinds of trace metals in sea water, suspended matter and bottom sediments, sixty samples from the Kum and Mankyung estuaries were analyzed. In both estuaries, the distribution patterns of leachabl suspended trace metals and of bottom sediments were established to be similar. The relationship between the metal concentration and clay content of the sediments was found to be such that the metal concentration increases with an increase in clay content. A linear correlation ws determined between pairs of leachable metals (Fe-Zn, Fe-Mn and Zn-Mn) in the Kum estuary. However, in the Mankyung estuary linear relationship does not exist. Finally, it is suggested that the trace metals are reworking in the Kum estuary and those in the Mankyung estuary are sinking.

Genetic diversity and genetic structure within the Geum River and Mankyung River populations of the Korean endangered Black shinner (Pseudopungtungia nigra) were assessed by amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). AFLP analysis using five primer combinations generated 447 AFLP bands with 64.1% polymorphism (Geum River 74.6% and Mankyung River 53.6%). The heterozygosities within the two populations were calculated to be 0.170 and 0.104, respectively. Their average genetic diversities are 0.240 and 0.147, respectively. The pairwise Fst value (0.150) indicated distinct genetic differentiation between the two populations. A UPGMA dendrogram based on genetic distance among the individuals revealed a division corresponding to geographical regions, with low genetic variation within the Mankyung River population, and low genetic distance (0.026) between the two populations. Consequently, the two populations may have the same genetic origin The Geum River population will be more suitable than the Mankyung River population for conservation plans to increase the population sizes. Genetic and habitat management will be necessary for the Mankyung River population.
This study was performed to investigate present water quality and pollution characteristics of them in the basin area of the Mankyung river near Chonju urban stream. In order to obtain the pollution characteristics of this investigation, the physio-chemical water analysis as temperature, pH, DO, BOD, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn, and coliform group and their correlation analysis were determined from March to August 1988. The main results were summarized as follows 1. Each chemical constituent detected in three streams has the following variation range as pH(6.7-7.3), DO(1.3-8.9 mg/l), BOD(1.6-162.5mg/l) and water temperature was dominated by atmospheric temperature. 2. In three streams, concentration range of heavy metal was Cd N.D.-2.8 $\mu$g/l, Cu 1.1-10.2 $\mu$g/l, Pb 2.1-13.2 $\mu$g/l and Zn 25.6-62.2 $\mu$g/l, and was shown the order of Zn, Pb, Cu and Cd. 3. In the investigation on the bacteriological pollution-in the three streams. 1) The average number of general bacteria contaminated in the Chonju urban stream was $1.7 \times 10^{5}$ numbers/ml, which was higher than $2.6 \times 10^{2}$ numbers/ml, in the Gosan stream and 1.6 $\times$ 10 numbers/ml in the Mankyung river. 2) The average number of total coliform, fecal coliform and fecal streptococcus contaminated in the Chonju urban stream which was the highest polluted site than those of the other sampling sites were respectively $2.1 \times 10^{5}$, $2.1 \times 10^{5}$ and $9.6 \times 10^{4}$ MPN/100ml. 4. Correlation coefficient between GB and TC in the Chonju stream, Gosan stream and Mankyung river was respectively 0.99, 0.96 and 0.99, Correlation coefficient between TC and FC in Chonju stream, Gosan stream and Mankyung river was respectively 0.99, 0.97 and 0.99 and correlation coefficient between FC and TC was respectively 0.99, 0.91 and 0.99. This results mean positively dose relationship between them. 5. The occupied percentage of FC of TC in the Chonju stream, Gosan stream and Mankyung river was respectively 88.1%, 68.4% and 77.9% and the percentage of Tc of TS was respectively 43.5%, 31.6% and 41.4%. These .results was considered indicative of pollution derived from domestic wastes which had been contaminated by the feces of inhabitants and domestic animals.
Sediments of Mankyung and Dongjin river were examined on the physico-chemical properties and phosphorus fractionations. The content of total-P in sediment of Mankyung river ranged from 290.1 to 405.4 mg/kg (average = 363.4 mg/kg), while that in sediment of Dongjin river ranged from 304.1 to 431.7 mg/kg (average = 353.6 mg/kg). In both rivers, the total-P was highest in June to September. It is presumed that surficial sediment in arable land flowed into the rivers with rainfall-runoff. Phosphorus fractionations in Mankyung and Dongjin river were apatite-P 52.1% and 42.7%, residual-P 27.3% and 34.2%, nonapatite inorganic-P 18.1% and 22.5%, and adsorbed-P 0.6% and 0.6%, respectively. Adsorbed-P in sediment was the most scarcity fraction. It thus appears that adsorbed phosphorus was not effected in aquatic ecosystem. But nonapatite inorganic-P would be highly released under changes of redox condition and pH in aquatic ecosystem.

Authors investigatigated the analysis heavy metals in corps at the Mankyung river area. Samples were digested with Cone. nitric acid and Cone. hydroc hrorico acid and analyzed by Varian 875 Atomic Absorption Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer in 1984. The results were as follows: The contents of heavy metals in rice were in the range of $0.41{\sim}5.15,\;1.12{\sim}5.18,\;10.65{\sim}14.54,\;24.15{\sim}35.41ppm$ for Pb, Cu, Mn, Zn respectively. Those in barley were in the range of $0.48{\sim}0.8,\;1.39{\sim}2.81,\;9.69{\sim}14.89,\;30.14{\sim}34.84ppm$ for Pb, Cu, Mn, Zn respectively. Those in kidney bean were in the range of $0.06{\sim}0.13,\;3.65{\sim}6.25,\;.65{\sim}12.15,\;51.25{\sim}65.69\;ppm$ for Pb, Cu, Mn, Zn respectively. Those in corn were in the range of $0.59{\sim}0.89,\;2.15{\sim}2.83,\;6.01{\sim}10.15,\;29.31{\sim}36.15ppm$for Pb, Cu, Mn, Zn respectively. We might be concluded that the above values of heavy metals contained in crop at the sites near to Mankyung river were serious partially.

In recent years, environmental pollution by phannaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the aquatic environment is of great concern worldwide. Recent studies have been reported to occur in a variety of environmental organisms such as surface, drinking and ground water, soils, sediments and hospitals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and environmental behavior of fourteen human PPCPs in surface waters of Mankyung River in South Korea. We were conducted to field survey for water quality and PPCPs analysis at November, 2006. PPCPs were analyzed by liquid chromatograph coupled with a tandem mass spectrometer (HPLC-MS/MS). The concentration of COD was measured to be 2.37$\sim$19.71 mg/L, which was belong to 4$\sim$5 grade in water quality criteria of lake. Station 2 that there is no pollution in upper stream, was appeared to lower concentration. The concentration of TN and TP, that is cause matter of eutrophication, were found to be 7.78$\sim$35.42 mg/L and 0.08$\sim$0.95 mg/L, respectively, which were exceeding 5 grade in Lake water quality criteria. The 11 kind of PPCPs compounds except levofloxacin and triclosan were detected to Mankyung river. PPCPs concentrations of STP(Sewer Treatment Plant) effluents and aquatic environment in Mankyung river have been detected in the range from dozens of ng/L to hundreds of ${\mu}g/L$ that by order of atenolol, carbamazepine, propranolol, Ibuprofen, erythromycin, ifenprodil, clarithromycin, mefenamic acid, fluconazole, indomethacin, disopyramide. PPCPs concentration of Station 1 and 5, which was influenced by Jeonju STP and Wanju STP, was detected high values. Station 2 that there is no pollution, showed lower values. Station 3 which joined Gosan stream and Jeonju stream and station 4 which influenced by stock wastewater was detected to low values.

The watershed information of the Mankyung River and Dongjin River is obtained and analysed using the GIS tool. The informations i.e., digital map, land use, point sources, weather station, water quality measurement station, and pollutants load unit are managed by DB system. The slope, rainfall, and generated pollutants loads of COD, TN and TP which are the input data of the rainfall-runoff-pollutants load model are estimated. From the analysis of the collected and generated data, the almost watershed area is composed of agricultural lands except the upstream regions. The population and industrial area are densely located in Cheonju City and Iksan City, whereas the farming areas are widely distributed.
