  • China's Mapping Satellite-1, developed by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), was launched in three years ago. The data from Mapping Satellite-1 are able to use for efficient surveying and geometric mapping application field. In this paper, we fuse the panchromatic and multispectral images of Changchun area, which are obtained from the Mapping Satellite-1, the one that is the Chinese first transmission-type three-dimensional mapping satellite. The four traditional image fusion methods, which are HPF, Mod.IHS, Panshar and wavelet transform, were used to approach for effectively fusing Mapping Satellite-1 remote sensing data. Subsequently we assess the results with some commonly used methods, which are known a subjective qualitative evaluation and quantitative statistical analysis approach. Consequently, we found that the wavelet transform remote sensing image fusion is the optimal in the degree of distortion, the ability of performance of details and image information availability among four methods. To further understand the optimal methods to fuse Mapping Satellite-1 images, an additional study is necessary.

  • In 1799, Korea has become a country that holds Earth observation satellite in orbit as they had succeeded in the launch of KOPMSAT-1, the first Korean Earth observation satellite for the practical purpose. For the wide application of the satellite imagery, various application techniques are required, and topographic mapping is essential technique for the application in various fields. Moreover, considering that the main mission of the KOMPSAT-1 is to provide the satellite imagery for the mapping of Korean peninsula, the topographic mapping using KOMPSAT-1 EOC imagery is very significant. In this paper, we showed the possibility of digital plotting using KOMPSAT-1 EOC stereo images to produce topographic map. For the purpose, we implemented experimental stereo plotting using digital photogrammetric workstation and analyzed the procedure. As a result of this paper, we showed that some elements consist in 1:25,000 scale map can be plotted from KOMPSAT-1 Stereo images.

  • Mapping systems using Satellite Imagery has not been well-established compare to conventional Arial Photograph mapping systems. In order for satellite imagery to produce a stable quality of maps, it requires to follow the standard mapping procedures. In this satellite imagery study, we proposed four methods of mapping procedures. Mapping methods were established by generating trial maps and analyzing types of input data and functions of DPW (Digital Photogrammetric Workstation). On quantitative aspect, accuracy of each steps were measured by increasing 2 GCPs each time from the minimum of 6 GCPs. In DLT, with the minimum of 10 points, RMSE is 2 pixels at most. Besides that, interpretation and stereoscopic plotting using KOMPSAT-1 imagery and other simulated imagery was performed. The tests resulted that, for KOMPSAT-1 (6.6m) stereoscopic images, the possibility of interpretation is 44.79% and possibility of stereoscopic plotting is 43.75%. In the other hand, for simulated imagery (1m), the possibility of interpretation is 60.92% and possibility of stereoscopic plotting is 55.18%.

  • Satellite captures images periodically and economically over the area wider than aerial photographs, and reconnaissance to unapproachable area. For these advantages, mapping using high resolution satellite image has high potentials of marketability and development. Therefore, utilization of satellite image in mapping and GIS is expected to be growing and research on describable feature, positional accuracy and, possible mapping scale is urgently needed. This research presented that Quick Bird orthoimage could be used to update digital map on a scale of 1:5,000. Quick Bird image was corrected geometrically based on ground control points. DEM was generated using height data of digital topographic map. The orthoimge was produced by digital differential rectification based on DEM which was generated using height data of digital topographic map(scale 1;5,000 and 1;1,000). When the digital topographic map was overlaid with the orthoimage, it was very easy to find changed region or new features builded after the map compiled.

  • Recently the domestic technologies to manage forest and to control all related information were developed very rapidly by integrating FGIS (Forest Geographic Information System) and IT (Information technology). However, there still exists a mapping problem for example when overlaying a topography maps scaled in 1/5,000 to a forest type map scaled in 1/25.000. Moreover, there is a greater need to introduce the advanced spatial technologies such as high-resolution satellite image such as IKONOS and GIS to forest. In this study, 3D high-resolution forest mapping system was developed to possibly overlay with all kinds of scale maps and provide the all detailed information by using high-resolution satellite image and GIS. Through this system, all related forest officials could have and maintain the data consistency for their job and share the standard forest database with other post.

  • Biotop map can be utilized for nature conservation and assessment of environmental impact for human activities in urban area. High resolution satellite images such as IKONOS and KOMPSAT1-EOC were interpreted to classify land use, hydrology, impermeable pavement ratio and vegetation for biotop mapping. Wildlife habitat map and detailed vegetation map obtained from former study results were used as ground truth data. Vegetation was investigated directly for the area where the detailed vegetation map is not available. All these maps were combined and the boundaries were delineated to produce the biotop map. Within the boundary, the characteristics of each polygon were identified, and named. This study investigates the possibility of biotop mapping using high resolution satellite remote sensing data together with field data with the goal of contributing to nature conservation in urban area.

  • Purpose: This study aims to map the spatial distribution of poverty using nighttime light satellite images as a proxy indicator of economic activities and infrastructure distribution in D.I Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Research design, data, and methodology: This study uses official poverty statistics (National Socio-economic Survey (SUSENAS) and Poverty Database 2015) to compare satellite imagery's ability to identify poor urban areas in D.I Yogyakarta. National Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS), as poverty statistics at the macro level, uses expenditure to determine the poor in a region. Poverty Database 2015 (BDT 2015), as poverty statistics at the micro-level, uses asset ownership to determine the poor population in an area. Pearson correlation is used to identify the correlation among variables and construct a Support Vector Regression (SVR) model to estimate the poverty level at a granular level of 1 km x 1 km. Results: It is found that macro poverty level and moderate annual nighttime light intensity have a Pearson correlation of 74 percent. It is more significant than micro poverty, with the Pearson correlation being 49 percent in 2015. The SVR prediction model can achieve the root mean squared error (RMSE) of up to 8.48 percent on SUSENAS 2020 poverty data. Conclusion: Nighttime light satellite imagery data has potential benefits as alternative data to support regional poverty mapping, especially in urban areas. Using satellite imagery data is better at predicting regional poverty based on expenditure than asset ownership at the micro-level. Light intensity at night can better describe the use of electricity consumption for economic activities at night, which is captured in spending on electricity financing compared to asset ownership.

  • The aim of this study was to detect landslide using satellite image and apply the landslide to probabilistic landslide-susceptibility mapping at Gangneung area, Korea using a Geographic Information System (GIS). Landslide locations were identified by change detection technique of KOMSAT-1 (Korea Multipurpose Satellite) EOC (Electro Optical Camera) images and checked in field. For landslide-susceptibility mapping, maps of the topography, geology, soil, forest, lineaments, and land cover were constructed from the spatial data sets. Then, the sixteen factors that influence landslide occurrence were extracted from the database. Using the factors and detected landslide, the relationships were calculated using frequency ratio, one of the probabilistic model. Then, landslide-susceptibility map was drawn using the frequency ration and finally, the map was verified by comparing with existing landslide locations. As the verification result, the prediction accuracy showed 86.76%. The landslide-susceptibility map can be used to reduce hazards associated with landslides and to land cover planning.

  • This study attempts to establish a system extracting and monitoring cultural grounds of seaweeds (lavers, brown seaweeds and seaweed fulvescens) and abalone on the basis of both KOMPSAT-2 and Terrasar-X data. The study areas are located in the northwest and southwest coast of South Korea, famous for coastal cultural grounds. The northwest site is in a high tidal range area (on the average, 6.1 min Asan Bay) and has laver cultural grounds for the most. An semi-automatic detection system of laver facilities is described and assessed for spacebome optic images. On the other hand, the southwest cost is most famous for seaweeds. Aquaculture facilities, which cover extensive portions of this area, can be subdivided into three major groups: brown seaweeds, capsosiphon fulvescens and abalone farms. The study is based on interpretation of optic and SAR satellite data and a detailed image analysis procedure is described here. On May 25 and June 2, 2008 the TerraSAR-X radar satellite took some images of the area. SAR data are unique for mapping those farms. In case of abalone farms, the backscatters from surrounding dykes allows for recognition and separation of abalone ponds from all other water-covered surfaces. But identification of seaweeds such as laver, brown seaweeds and seaweed fulvescens depends on the dampening effect due to the presence of the facilities and is a complex task because objects that resemble seaweeds frequently occur, particularly in low wind or tidal conditions. Lastly, fusion of SAR and optic spatial images is tested to enhance the detection of aquaculture facilities by using the panchromatic image with spatial resolution 1 meter and the corresponding multi-spectral, with spatial resolution 4 meters and 4 spectrum bands, from KOMPSAT-2. The mapping accuracy achieved for farms will be estimated and discussed after field verification of preliminary results.
