  • SiC-TiC composites have been fabricated by using a mechanochemical processing of a mixture of Si, Ti, and C at room temperature and subsequent hot pressing. TiC powders have been obtained by the mechanochemical processing of a mixture of Ti and C whereas SiC powders has not been obtained from a mixture of Si and C. By using the exothermic reaction between Ti and C, SiC-TiC powder could be obtained from the mixture of Si, Ti, and C using the mechanochemical processing for more than 12h. The X-ray diffraction analysis has shown that the powder subjected to the mechanochemical processing consisted of the particles having crystallite size below 10nm. Fully densified SiC-TiC composites have been obtained by hot-pressing of the powder at 1850$\^{C}$ for 3h and it has shown comparable mechanical properties to those of the SiC-TiC composites prepared from the commercially available SiC and TiC powders. Flexural strength of 560 MPa and fracture toughness of 4.8 MP$.$am$\_$1/2/ have been shown for the SiC-TiC composites with composition corresponding to 0.75:0.25:1 mole ratio of Si:Ti:C.

  • Mechanochemical processing (MCP) involves several high-energy collisions of powder particles with the milling media and results in the increased reactivity/sinterability of powder. The present paper shows results of mechanochemical processing (MCP) of silicon nitride powder mixture with the relevant sintering additives. The effects of MCP were studied by structural changes of powder particles themselves as well as by the resulting sintering/densification ability. It has been found that MCP significantly enhances reactivity and sinterability of the resultant material: silicon nitride ceramics could be pressureless sintered at $1500^{\circ}C$. Nevertheless, a degree of a silicon nitride crystal lattice and powder particle destruction (amorphization) as detected by XRD studies, is limited by the specific threshold. If that value is crossed then particle's surface damage effects are prevailing thus severe evaporation overdominates mass transport at elevated temperature. It is discussed that the cross-solid interaction between particles of various chemical composition, triggered by many different factors during mechanochemical processing, including a short-range diffusion in silicon nitride particles after collisions with other types of particles plays more important role in enhanced reactivity of tested compositions than amorphization of the crystal lattice itself. Controlled deagglomeration of $Si_3N_4$ particles during the course of high-energy milling was also considered.

  • Nanomachining process, static nanoplowing, is one of the most promising lithographic technologies in terms of the low cost of operation and variety of workable materials. In nanomachining process, chemical effects are more dominant factor compared with those by physical deformation or fracture. For example, during the nanoscratch on a silicon surface in the atmosphere, micro protuberances are formed due to the mechanochemical reaction between diamond tip and the surfaces. On the contrary, in case of chemically stable materials, such as ceramic or glass, surface protuberances are not formed. The purpose of this study is to understand effects of the mechanochemical reaction between tip and surfaces on deformation behaviors of hard-brittle materials. Nanometerscale elasoplastic deformation behavior of single crystal silicon (100) was characterized with micro protuberance phenomena, and compared with that of borosilicate (Pyrex glass 7740). In addition, effects of the silicon protuberances on nanoscratch test results were discussed.

  • Fabrication of mortar containing fly ash for high strength structural material was investigated by using a Mechanochemically Processed Cement (MPC) and/or Fly Ash (MPFA), which was compared to the specimen (at the same fabrication condition of fly ash adding contents (10, 20 and 30 wt%) and curing time (7 and 28 days)) fabricated by using Ball-mill Processed Cement (BPC) and As Received Fly Ash (ARFA) in terms with compressive strength and microstructures. Mortar specimen fabricated by using MPC and ARFA showed 5-11% higher compressive strength than that in the case of using BPC and ARFA, and mortar specimen by using BPC and MPFA represented 10-20% higher compressive strength than that for the case of using BPC and ARFA. Furthermore, mortar specimen fabricated by simultaneously using MPC and MPFA exhibited about 24% higher value of compressive strength than that for the case of using BPC and ARFA, which was considered to be synergic efficiency in increasing compressive strength. Increased compressive strength as above mentioned is considered to be caused by mutually increased affinity between cement and fly ash induced during mechanochemical Processing(MP).

  • Lanthanum nickel oxide$(LaNiO_3)$ powders have been prepared via a mechanochemical processing without any additional heat treatment. When a mixed lanthanum and nickel oxide was mechanically activated for 6 hours with 450 rpm, a stable and single phase perovskite powder was successfully synthesized and its crystallite size of about 90 nm is calculated by using the Scherrer equation.

  • An equal-molar mixture of silver chloride (AgCl) and copper (Cu) was ground in atmosphere conditions using a planetary ball mill to investigate mechanochemical (MC) reaction for preparation of silver powders. The reaction causes the mixture of AgCl and Cu to change the composition of the mixture, such as silver (Ag) and cuprous chloride (CuCl). Through the leaching with ammonium hydroxide solution (1 mol), CuCl can be separated from MC product, so that pure Ag powders can be obtained as the final product. Moreover, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used as the additive not only to improve dispersion of Ag pow- der during MC process, but also to control surface oxidation of Ag powders, prepared as the final product.

  • In this work, Zinc ferrite nanoparticles have been prepared by various methods, conventional (ZC), mechanochemical processing (ZM) and Sol-Gel (ZS) method, to compare their structural and magnetic properties. The cation distribution obtained from XRD shows the degrees of inversions are 4%, 14.8%, and 16.4% from the normal $ZnFe_2O_4$ structure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) confirms changes in cation distribution of $ZnFe_2O_4$ fabricated by sol-gel and mechanochemical processing. The $^{57}Fe$ M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra of the samples were recorded at room temperature. The spectra exhibit a line broadening. The magnetic properties of the samples were studied by vibration sample magnetometer (VSM) at room temperature and the results show that the sample ZM has ferrimagnetic behaviour.
