  • Objectives : The rapid progress seen in the Chinese medical and pharmaceutical industries since the mid.Ming Dynasty, and the resulting surge in demand for medicinal herbs led to the emergence of dedicated medicinal herb markets. A representative example was the medicinal herb market of Qizhou (today's Anguo) in Hebei Province. This paper examines various factors that contributed to the transformation and growth of Qizhou into and as a major medicinal herb market of China. Methods : Along with the examination of geographical factors, this study attempts to link the development of Qizhou as a center for medicinal herbs trade with legends related to the Medicine Lord Temple (Yao Wang Miao), a local shrine dedicated to the mythical Medicine Kings. Results : The main argument of this study is that although the emergence of Qizhou as China's largest marketplace for medicinal herbs was significantly helped by its proximity to Beijing, a huge source of demand, as well as its convenient location easily accessible from all parts of the country, and the large herbal production from surrounding areas, the single.most important contributing factor was the body of legends attributing to this city a magical healing energy. Conclusions : The example of Qizhou may also suggest that in pre.modern eras, legends related to supernatural healing power, associated to a city or town, were as important contributing factors to its emergence and growth as a dedicated medicinal herb market as its location or ease of access.

  • Recently, it has been a big issue to distinguish the dried roots of Cynanchum wilfordii and C. auriculatum in health functional food market. The original plant species of Cynanchi Wilfordii Radix belong to the Asclepiadaceae family is differentially described in the national pharmacopoeia of Korea, China and Japan. Owing to the morphological similarities of the dried roots of this plant to those of C. auriculatum, which is often misidentified in Korean herbal medicine marketplace, distinguishing these two species is exceedingly difficult. The purpose of this study was to compare the conventional-PCR with the real-time PCR for detection of C. wilfordii and C. auriculatum DNA. We also tried to realize a quantitative real-time PCR assay using species-specific matK primers, which allowed us to estimate the ratio of C. willfordii and C. auriculatum using varying ratios of mixed genomic DNA template from the two species. The differentiation of intentional and unintentional mixture in this study would be applied to food safety management and can be helpful for protection of consumer's right and cultivators.

  • Finding a means to discriminate the commercial herb medicines when they were dried and sliced is a very important and imminent project in Korea. To differentiate plant origins and the commercial herb medicines of Atractylodes japonica and A. macrocephala, two discriminative methods using anatomical characteristics and SCAR marker were applied. It was possible to discriminate plant origins and the commercial herb medicines between A. japonica and A. macrocephala by anatomical characteristics: development of periderm, layer of stone cell, distribution of laticiferous vessels, development of xylem fiber in xylem ray, contained quantity of clustered crystals and others. While, two SCAR markers were developed from RAPD clones: SAjR2 (600 bp) from AjR2 and SAmR1 (1,200 bp) from AmR1. These two markers were enough for discrimination plant origins and the commercial herb medicines between A. japonica and A. macrocephala. The result of application of anatomical characteristics and SCAR markers to investigate current status in domestic herb market, Daegu and Kumsan herb market, it was identified to be current herb medicines of A japonica.

  • Objectives : We applied the term weighting method used in the field of data search to quantify relevancy between symptoms and medicinal herbs, and, based on this, we aim to introduce a method of visualizing the characteristics of medicinal herbs. Methods : We proposed HF-IFF, an adaptation of TF-IDF, which is a term weighting measurement method adapted in the field of data search. Using this method, we deduced relevancy between symptoms and medicinal herbs In Cheongkangeuigam that was published in 1984 by organizing the medical theory of Cheongkang, Kim Younghoon, and visualized this as a graph in order to compare the characteristics of medicinal herbs used for different symptoms. Results : HF-IFF is the product of HF and IFF, where HF is the frequency of the relevant medicinal herb for a set of symptoms, and IFF is the inverse of the number of formulations (FF) containing that herb. A total of 251 types of medicinal herb are used in Cheongkangeuigam, and 1538 formulations are classified according to 67 types of symptom. The overall mean for HF-IFF was 0.491, with a maximum of 4.566 and a minimum of 0.013. Conclusions : In spite of several limitations, we were able to use HF-IFF to measure relevancy between symptoms and medicinal herbs, with formulations as an intermediate. We were able to use the quantified results to visually express the characteristics of the herbs used for symptoms by bubble chart and word-cloud from HF-IFF.
