The effect of medicinal herb powder addition on the physicochemical characteristics of silk-tofu was investigated. Moisture content of silk-tofu decreased during the storage. The pH value of silk-tofu decreased a little until 2 days' storage, and then increased rapidly. The chromaticity of L value decreased for all silk-tofu during the storage. The a value increased a little at initial storage, and then tended to decrease, while b values increased significantly during storage. The contents of free amino acid were 4 times higher in silk-tofu than those in market tofu. Hardness, gumminess and chewiness of all silk-tofu increased rapidly during storage. Cohesiveness values decreased a little at initial storage, and then kept to increase upon storage. Generally, the total plate counts of bacteria of all silk-tofu increased during storage, and those of silk tofu with added medicinal herb powder were shown to be significantly lower than those in control. In sensory evaluation, color, structure, softness and overall acceptability of silk tofu with added dangui powder(dang-T) and control(con-T) were about to be high, and nutty taste and flavor of control silk-tofu was the highest in score.
The antimicrobial activity of seventy five ethanol extracts obtained from 67 different kinds of plant species of the Mongolian flora were evaluated by means of the disc diffusion method against five species of microorganisms, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Among the plant extracts examined, 34 kinds of extracts demonstrated significant antibacterial activity against one or more species of microorganisms, respectively. Especially, the root extract of Paeonia anomala, the whole herb extract of Myricaria alopecuroides, the whole herb extract of comarum zalesovianum, the whole herb extract of Agrimonia pilosa and some other plant extracts demonstrated a particularly potent antimicrobial activity. The ethylacetate fractions obtained from the whole herb extract of Myricaria alopecuroides and from those of Sedum aizoon, Paeonia anomala, Sedum hybridum and Dasiphora fruticosa exhibited a particularly potent antibacterial activity especially against Staphylococcus aureus and Micrococcus luteus.

Methods Medicinal herbs from Donguibogam Opthalmic Chapter were analyzed and herbal combinations were extracted from the medicinal herbs by using the network analysis tool NetMiner 4 program. Result Based on network analysis of medicinal herbs from Donguibogam Opthalmic Chapter, frequently used medicinal herbs and herbal combinations were analyzed and were consisted of 4 communities. Conclusion This study shows the most frequent medicinal herbs and herbal combinations from the Donguibogam Opthalmic Chapter. Based on the results significant medicinal herbs and combinations can be considered and moreover can be used to produce a new combination for opthalmic diseases. Further study is required since this study has excluded the component volume of herbs and the individual frequentcy of each combination.

Psoriasis is one of the most common inflammatory skin disorders, with a global prevalence of 2% - 3%. It is an autoimmune skin disorder characterized by excessive generation of plaques on the skin with typical long-lasting red, itchy, and scaly lesions. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the anti-psoriatic effect of the methanolic extract of Persicaria senticosa (PS), a bioactive edible plant extract used in traditional medicine, using a mouse model of imiquimod (IMQ)-induced psoriasis. The daily topical application of IMQ could induce human psoriasis-like lesion. The extract ameliorated IMQ-induced psoriasis. Furthermore, hematoxylin and eosin staining and the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) scores indicated that topical application of PS led to an improvement in erythema, scaling, and thickness scores of the mouse dorsal skin and a considerable decrease in the epidermal thickness of the ear and dorsal skin in the IMQ-induced psoriatic mouse model. We also studied the effect of PS on the proliferation of keratinocytes using HaCaT cells. The extract inhibited cell proliferation and IL-6 and pSTAT3 expression induced by M5 cocktail (comprising interleukin [IL]-1α, IL-17A, IL-22, oncostatin M, and tumor necrosis factor-α) in HaCaT cells. Thus, PS might serve as a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of psoriasis.
The antioxidative activity of a medicinal herb mixture combined with traditional natural herbal materials was investigated. The medicinal herb mixture yielded 35.00% water extracts and 25.33% 80% ethanol extracts. The ethyl acetate fraction yields were 0.64% in the water extracts and 3.76% in the 80% ethanol extracts. The total flavonoid contents of the water and 80% ethanol extracts were 2.34 and 2.42%, respectively, and their total phenolic contents were 5.04 and 4.56%. The total flavonoid and phenolic contents of the ethyl acetate fraction were the highest in the various solvent extracts. The extracts were rich in salicylic and ${\rho}$-coumaric acids. The electron-donating ability of the medicinal herb mixture was 43.32% in the water extracts and 41.32% in the 80% ethanol extracts, and the nitrite-scavenging ability was 9.68% in the water extracts and 8.94% in the 80% ethanol extracts.
The present study is designed that the herb medicines which are returned to kidney, pancreas and are known by efficacy in growth are supplied to pigs, thereafter the effects to growth and secretion of growth hormone in serum is investigated. For this purpose the 24 days old pigs, which are crossbreeding, castrated are used. The conclusions are that after 4 weeks' supply of herb medicinal compounds, pigs' weight gain has increased in low nutritional group with statistical meaning(p〈0.05). And one day's weight gain has increased with statistical meaning(p〈0.05) in all groups. Regarding food take, the second nutritional group has more significant increase than control group. Utilization rate of nutrition doesn't have any statistical meaning in all groups, but it has the tendency that as herb medicinal compounds are added, utilization rate of nutrition is increased. Increase of vertebra lengths and level of growth hormone in serum according to supply of herb medicinal compound don't have any statistical meaning because of small sample size, but 10 - 20 % increase of vertebra lengths and 10 - 30 % increase of level of growth hormone are observed.
Objectives : The aim of this research is to produce information by gathering up the data on the interaction between medicinal herbs which lie scattered in oriental medical books, and to provide people with easy access to the information by visualizing it. Methods : For this purpose, this study established the fundamental data by organizing the patterns of interaction into some kinds after selecting a part of Bonchogangmok(本草綱目) and extracting its text. In addition, in an effort to visualize the data, the study converted the data into 'net' file and visualized the interaction between medicinal herbs on Pajek. The visualization was done targeting a total of three patterns, such as 1 medicinal herb, 2 medicinal herbs, and 1 prescription. With the data on 'Chinese Lacquer(乾漆)' for 1 medicinal herb, data on 'Licorice(甘草)' and 'Chinese Lacquer(乾漆)' for 2 medicinal herbs, and data on 'Iijin-tang(二陳湯)' for prescription, the research conducted the analysis of the network using 'Kamada-Kawaii Algorithm' on Pajek. Results : As a result of the analysis, it was possible to see the meanings at a single glance as the scattered and fractional meanings were integrated with focus on medicinal herbs, but the increasing number of analyzed medicinal herbs tended to more and more complicate their relationships, thus, requiring additional work like filtering. Conclusions : Such results are fairly applicable in on-line database, and it is judged that if further research expands its scope to include systematic classification of medicinal herbs or cover other medical books than Bonchogangmok, it will create more objective, abundant information.
In order to search for anti -melanin formation agents from Korean medicinal herbs, we selected 21 Korean medicinal herbs, based on a review of Korean traditional medicine books and the recommendations of Korean traditional medical doctors. We tested for inhibition effect of melanin pigmentation of Clone M-3 mouse melanocyte cell lines when we treated the extracts of 21 medicinal herbs in the mouse melanocyte cell lines, respectively. Among 21 medicinal herb extracts, 5 extracts showed a inhibition effect of melanin formation. The sample Phaseolus radiatus L, Cordyceps militaris, Pinellia ternata, Phellinus linteus and Citrus junos Tanaka showed a significantly little formation of melanin pigments compared with control groups. Especially extract of Citrus junos Tanaka was more potent than the others. These results suggest that extract of Korean Citrus junos may represents an excellent candidate for inhibition of melanin pigmentation at in vitro level.
Antioxidant activity and nicotine degradation activity (NDA) of 21 medicinal herbs were determined by using a 1,1-diphenol-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method and a PLC/PRF5 human liver cell line method, respectively, to develop an anti-smoking aid. The highest and lowest antioxidant activities represented by $IC_{50}$/ value were 30 $\mu$g/mL of Eugenia caryophyllus and 3,270 $\mu$g/mL of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer, respectively. Antioxidant activity of Eugenia caryophyllus was equal to 38.0$\pm$1.2 mg VCEAC(vitamin C equivalent antioxidant capacity)/ g herb. The highest and lowest NDA values were 1.81 of Astrgalus membranaceus Bunge and 1.01 of Raphani seed and Lespedeza tomentosa Sieb, respectively. Eleven medicinal herbs with high antioxidant activity and/or NDA were selected to make an herbal tea. The herbal tea had high antioxidant activity (50 $\mu$g/mL $IC_{50}$/ and 22.4$\pm$1.4 mgVCEAC/g) and NDA (1.243). The medicinal herb tea could help smokers quitting smoking by degrading and exhausting nicotine accumulated in body and removing reactive oxygen species.
