  • Through analyzing the frequencies of medicinal herb combinations in the prescriptions of "wenrejingwei(溫熱經緯)", we could understand the characteristics of prescription composition and author's medical thoughts. So we conducted this study that analyze combination of 187 medicinal herbs in 113 prescriptions, and found meaningful combinations of 273. Among these, the most meaningful combinations are the one of 7 herbs, Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer, Zingiber Rhizoma, Ziziphus jujube Mille, Pinellia ternata Breitenbach, Panax ginseng C.A.Meyer, Cyprinus carpio, Coptis chineis Franch. These are the same medicinal herbs which consist of Banhasasim-tang(banxiaxiexin-tang). It means these combinations are effective in stuffiness caused by stomach deficiency. In conclusion, prescriptions of "wenrejingwei(溫熱經緯)" involve herbs mostly used to treat stuffiness caused by stomach deficiency, and this is the author's important one of medical view points.

  • The aim of this study was to screen the contamination by ochratoxin A of mycotoxins in various medicinal herbs. We conducted a survey of ochratoxin A in medicinal herb on the retail market in Incheon in 2016. 116 medicinal herb samples were evaluated for the ochratoxin A contamination. They were analyzed for ochratoxin A using immunoaffinity column and high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC)-fluorescence detection and the positive samples were confirmed using HPLC-tandem mass spectrometry. Ochratoxin A was detected in 4 medicinal herb samples; the concentrations of ochratoxin A were containing between 20.11 and $372.90{\mu}g/kg$. This study shows that in general, this kind of commodity may be contaminated by mycotoxins. Also this contamination is not limited to only aflatoxin of mycotoxins.

  • Objectives: To provide theoretical basis for the classification of medicinal moxibustion(藥灸劑) in Health Insurance Medical Benefit in Korea through investigating trend of judicial precedents on indirect moxibustion and usage of medicinal moxibustion in "Donguibogam". Methods: We analyzed statistical data of moxibustion from Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service and National Health Insurance Statistical Yearbook. We investigated major judicial precedents on indirect moxibustion to find out some trend and we searched the usages of medicinal moxibustion in "ZhenJiuDaCheng" and "Donguibogam". Results: According to recent judicial precedents, indirect moxibustion with equipment is no loner regarded as Korean Medical Procedure. In composition of 'Oriental Health Treatment', amount for acupuncture has gradually decreased instead, amount for moxibustion has increased steadily for 5 years. Medicinal moxibustion(藥灸劑) is often used as a form of indirect medicinal moxibustion with moxa in "Donguibogam". Argyi Folium, Moschus, Natrii Chloridium, Radix Preparata, Realgar and Olibanum are most frequently used for medicinal moxibustion in "Donguibogam". Medicinal moxibustions are composed of simple prescription or herb-pair or multiple prescription in "Donguibogam". Conclusions: In Health Insurance Medical Benefit in Korea, under the division of moxibustion, direct medicinal moxibustion and indirect medicinal moxibustion should be classified in addition.

  • Korean medicinal herb extracts(KMHE) were applied to the preservation of greenhouse produce in order to prove their effectiveness. KMHE showed remarkable antimicrobial effects against Bacillus cereus, Peudomonas syringae, and Corynebacterium xerosis causing the postharvest decay of greenhouse produce. Among KMHE the extracts of Rheum palmatum L. and Coptis chinensis Franch most obviously inhibited the growth of microorganims causing the Postharvest decay of greenhouse produce, which destroyed to undetectable levels when treated with more than 500ppm of KMHE. The activities of KMHE were stable in the wide spectrum of pH and temperature. Direct visualization of microbial cells by using both transmission electron microscope and scanning electron microscope showed microbial cell membrane the function of which was destroyed by treating with the dilute solutions of KMHE. This change of cellular membrane permeability could be identified in the experiment that O-nitrophenyl-$\beta$-D-galactopyranoside(ONPG), the artificial substrate of $\beta$-galactosidase, was hydrolyzed in the presence of KMHE, indicating that the membrane was perturbed by KMHE.

  • This study was conducted to determine mineral contents and anti oxidative activity of some herb plants cultivated in Korea. Herb plants contained various amount of mineral substances. Borage and chicory were abundant in calcium, and coriander and comfrey contained higher amount of iron compared with other herb plants. Potassium was found high in comfrey, borage and parsley. Strong antioxidative activity measured on MeOH extracts of herb plants using DPPH method was observed from spearmint, sweet basil, which was as strong as synthetic antioxidant, BHA and natural antioxidant, tocopherol.

  • Background: Angelica acutiloba Kitagawa belongs to the flowering plant family Apiaceae. Its young leaves are consumed as a vegetable, and its roots have medicinal properties. This study was conducted to analyze the seed germination characteristics of A. acutiloba according to its ripening stages. Methods and Results: The seeds were harvested from a research farm managed by the Department of Herbal Crop Research, Rural Development Administration in 2018 and were divided into six groups according to their specific gravities. In particular, we studied the effect of harvesting periods and umbel orders on seed characteristics. The results showed that the rates of germination, emergence, and early growth improved as the specific gravity of the seeds increased. In addition, the germination rates of the seeds harvested in mid July and early August were significantly higher than those harvested in the other seasons, and the seeds obtained from the first floret had the greatest mass and weight. Conclusions: In this study, we demonstrated that it is possible to improve the germination rate by appropriate selection of seeds and harvesting period both of which are closely related to seed maturity.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effects of the addition of medicinal herb extracts on shelf-life and quality of seasoning beef. The pH of seasoning beef treated with medicinal herbs was more stable than those without medicinal herbs. The moisture content of non-treated group decreased than that of group treated with medicinal herbs. The shear forces of seasoning beef revealed that non-treated group and other group treated with medicinal herbs were higher than those with medicinal herb extracts less than 0.5% adding medicinal herb extracts. As the storage time increased, the redness of group treated with 2.0% medicinal herbs was most stable among the seasoning beef color. The increase of TBA value was observed as the storage period increased. The total bacterial count of non-treated group was detected to 10$^{8}$ CFU/g, but that of group with medicinal herbs was counted from 10$^4$ CFU/g to 10$^{5}$ CFU/g at 6 days of storage time. The sensory evaluation indicated that the changes of group treated with various concentration of medicinal herbs were scored relatively higher than that of non-treated groups.
