  • Xe content is one of important factors related to characteristics of the mercury-free flat fluorescent lamp. The electro-optical properties of lamp were investigated for wide range of Xe content in Xe-Ne mixing gas. The maximum luminance of $9,289\;cd/m^2$ and efficacy of 3 lm/W was obtained with Xe 90 %.

  • We proposed a new Mercury-free flat fluorescent lamp (MFFL) for LCD backlight which has the scanning ability to reduce the blurring edges of moving images. We expanded the single cell MFFL with 2.2 inch diagonal size into the multi-cell MFFL for the 32-inch LCD-TV backlight application, and examined its response characteristics and proposed a driving scheme for scanning.

  • It is expected that there will be the regulation for limiting the amount of Hg content in cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) for LCD backlight system. Now it is necessary to develop mercury-free backlight system. The mercury-free CCFL coated with PDP phosphors was fabricated and evaluated. The CCFL filled with Xe and Ne showed 4500 ㏅/$m^2$ with efficiency of 13 lm/W.

  • A lamp which is currently employed to LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) Backlight is almost CCFL(Cold Cathod Fluorescent Lamp) and EEFL(External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp). However, the use of these lamps is being restricted as RoHS(the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment) regulation is gradually reinforced. According to this situation, the manufacturing of a lamp which doesn't use mercury is unescapable. Moreover, LCD TV has a defect which take place Motion Blur phenomenon due to response time of LC(Liquid Crystal), and Hold-type characteristic which only exists in LCD differently to CRT, PDP. In this paper, an inverter is proposed to drive a plane light source lamp which is not containing mercury. Driving circuit of proposed inverter is simple because the number of semiconductor device and magnetic device is reduced by using forward topology. Also, Motion Blur phenomenon is decreased by dividing the plane light source lamp to six block along vertical direction, and scanning. Finally, we proved usefulness of proposed inverter through experiment.

  • Recently, 2-dimensional flat light sources have been attracting much attention for its use in LCD backlight applications because of its high luminous efficiency and uniformity. A long-gap discharge, mercury-tree flat fluorescent lamp has been developed, which shows a high brightness ($>5000\;cd/m^2$) and high luminous efficacy (60 lm/W). Additionally, it has a wide operating margin and stable driving condition with the aid of an auxiliary electrode. For driving the lamp, a narrow pulse power to maintain the glow discharge state is required. Since there has been no research for this kind of lamp driving, this paper proposes a newly developed short-pulse, high-voltage lamp-driving scheme. The proposed lamp system uses a ballast with a coupled-inductor in order to raise the short pulse voltage up to the lamp ignition level and to obtain energy-recovery action during the glow discharge mode. The operation principles are presented and also the system performances such as the lighting efficiency, spatial and angular uniformities are evaluated by hardware experiments. The results show that the proposed lighting system is a good candidate for the next-generation of LCD backlight systems.

  • Structural parameter variation effects (changing the coplanar gap under different discharge dimensions) and use of complex gas mixtures (He, Ne, Ar and Xe) in mercury-free fluorescent lamps are studied in this paper. Pure Neon gas is the best buffer gas for obtaining high luminous efficiency in mercury-free fluorescent lamps. It is shown that with a shorter coplanar gap (30mm), a high luminous efficiency can be obtained at low operating voltage, as well as high luminance uniformity and stable discharge with a Ne-Xe 20% gas mixture.

  • This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of improvement in work environment and of segregation in a fluorescent lamp manufacturing factory. Among the total of 80 workers, 8 workers whose mercury concentration in urine reached a hazardous level ($200-299{\mu}g/l$) were moved to mercury free workplace. The follow-up examination for their mercury concentration in urine was done three times ; on May 3, 1988, September 1, 1988 and April 3, 1989. The results were as follows : 1. Mercury concentration in the air was reduced from 0.140 to 0.107 $mg/m^3$ in 4 months, and to $0.087mg/m^3$ in one year after environmental improvement in workplace. However the level still exceeded the Threshold Limit Value. 2. The geometric mean of urinary mercury concentration among 80 workers was $173.0{\mu}g/l\;(5.1{\sim}458.6{\mu}g/l$). The distribution of workers according to urinary mercury concentration showed that 9 workers (11.2%) were above the mercury poisoning level ($300{\mu}g/l$), 24 workers (30.0%) were $200-299{\mu}g/l$, 35 workers (43.8%) were $50-199{\mu}g/l$, and 12 workers (15.0%) were below 50 ${\mu}g/l$. 3. Among the 24 workers whose urinary mercury concentration was 200-299 $50-199{\mu}g/l$, 8 were able to be followed up. Their mean urinary mercury concentration before segregation was $244.9{\mu}g/l$, but decreased to $151.4{\mu}g/l$ in four months, $128.8{\mu}g/l$ in six months, and $46.8{\mu}g/l$ in one year after segregation.

  • In this paper we report on development of our original mercury-less fluorescent lamps for general lighting. These new-type lamps have multi-pairs of electrodes to maintain multi-discharge paths and to keep positive column diffused state. The omission characteristics oft the lamps were investigated. These discharge lamps were operated by pulsed discharge. By using multi-pairs of electrodes for xenon pulsed discharge fluorescent lamps, higher intensity of luminance was obtained than the conventional type of lamps using single pair of electrodes. Recently this type of lamp achieved over $9000\;cd/m^2$ and 50 lm/W.

  • In this paper, a mercury-free flat discharge lamp with opposite electrode structure, a couple of phosphor layer and discharge vessel has been studied for LCD back-lighting. When the drive voltage conditions were set properly, a uniform discharge generates over entires emitting surface. The firing voltage was increased with increasing the discharge gas pressure. It was considered that this tendency was resulted from the decrease of mean free paths due to the increase of discharge gas pressure. The maximum luminance of 2700[cd/m2] was obtained in the green emitting FFL.
