  • In research on housing welfare policy, there has been little interest in middle-aged households compared with young or elderly households. The purpose of this study was to explore influences on the housing satisfaction of middle-aged renter households using microdata from the Korea Housing Survey 2021. A statistical analysis of data was performed on a total of 2,709,152 middle-aged (aged between 40 and 64 years) Jeonse (lumpsum housing lease) renters and monthly renters with deposits, living in private rental housing units. The major findings were as follows. Firstly, there were significant differences in housing unit satisfaction and residential environment satisfaction among renter groups by age and rental type. Early-middle-aged Jeonse renters displayed the highest satisfaction with both housing units and the residential environment, while semielderly monthly renters with deposits displayed the lowest satisfaction. Secondly, living in aged structures or in apartment units exerted the strongest influences on housing satisfaction, which implies the need for residential area regeneration programs that consider the situation of rental households. Thirdly, living in Incheon and Gyeonggi-do was found to have a negative influence on housing satisfaction. Fourthly, upward filtering on tenure types or lease renewal of the current house did not necessarily have a positive influence on the housing satisfaction of middle-aged renters. Based on the findings, suggestions were made to improve the housing situation of middle-aged renter households.

This study examines if middle-aged women body types have changed based on data from the $5^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ Size Korea that objectively analyzed the aspects of middle-aged women's body size change and the related fashion industry that recognize changes in middle-aged women body types by suggesting foundational data for clothing designs. According to research results, middle-aged women's body type shows an increase in items related to height and that measurement values related to obesity (such as weight and BMI index) tend to decrease. Height has increased and weight has decreased compared to the past. Most items related to width or depth tend to show decreased values and we can assume that the present middle-aged women's body type is changing more dynamically than before. It will be possible to design proper clothes for consumer body type and trends if we design clothes that afford multilateral attention to the patterns, design, or material in clothing design by applying the aspects of middle-aged women's body size and body type change.

  • [Purpose] The purpose of this study was to comparatively investigate the correlation among body composition, resting metabolic rate (RMR), and physical activity (PA) between young and middle-aged Korean adults. [Methods] A total of 53 [male n=23, female n=30] subjects were included in this study, among whom 34 subjects were healthy young adults [male n=18, female n=16] and 19 were middle-aged adults [male n=5, female n=14]. The body composition and RMR of all the participants were measured after overnight fasting (≥8 h). The Korean version of the WHO Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) was used to assess physical activity. [Results] Body composition was not significantly different between young adults and middle-aged adults. Whole-body bone mineral density and bone mineral contents (BMC) were significantly lower in middle-aged adults than in young adults. Total blood cholesterol (TC) and blood glucose levels were significantly higher in middle-aged adults (TC; 195.21 ± 43.34, glucose; 103.57 ± 12.61 mg/dL) than in young adults. RMR was significantly lower in middle-aged adults (1619.57 ± 290.28 kcal/day) than in young adults (1894.37 ± 405.00 kcal/day). In middle-aged adults physical activity (PA). PA (METs, min, EE) was inversely correlated with fat mass (FM, kg, and %) and blood triglyceride (TG) level in young adults. In middle-aged adults, PA showed a significant positive correlation with lean body mass (LBM), FM (%), and RMR. Furthermore, PA EE showed significant interrelatedness with BMC among middle-aged adults. [Conclusion] These results demonstrated that high PA levels enable LBM and RMR maintenance in middle-aged adults. Furthermore, in young adults, more PA is required to induce change in body composition.
