Management and Regulation on the Minor Use of Pesticides in Korea and Foreign Countries (농약의 마이너 사용에 대한 국내외 관리 및 규제 현황)

  • A solution on pesticide minor use is being requested world widely on behalf of growers and for the appropriate measure for pesticide regulation. Presently, definition on "minor use" is different by country. And furthermore registration for pesticide use and the regulation approach are dependent on whether the crop is minor or major. For these reasons, management for pesticide minor use are more complicated and aggravated. This paper aimed to provide information on definition of minor use, minor use programs and regulatory incentives for minor use registration, with the purpose of supporting in developing a possible solution on minor use situation in Korea. In conclusion, two suggestions were made based on the worldwide information on pesticide minor use. First, a prudent consideration should be taken in defining minor use legally in Korea, which should include all situations regarded with minor use of pesticide, besides the use of pesticide on the crops cultivated in small area. Secondly, it is proposed to strengthen the present program, the "Ex Officio Registration" (implemented since 1998 in Korea, lead by the Rural Development Administration) by introducing a cooperative program like IR-4 Project of the USA, which is well known as an effective program for minor use solution as mentioned in the OECD guidance.

A Study on Crop Group for Pesticide Efficacy and Crop Safety of Minor Crops (소면적 재배작물의 약효 및 안전성 그룹화 적용 연구)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the pesticide efficacy and crop safety among different leafy vegetables applied with foliar spraying under greenhouse and to check extrapolating from some trial data to other minor crops. Leafy vegetables used in this study were: lettuce (Lactuca sativar), leaf broccoli (Brassica oleracea.), chicory (Cichorium intybus.), chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris subsp. napus var. pekinensis), radish (Raphanus sativus), rape (Brassica napus), crown daisy (Chrysanthemum coronarium), edible burdock (Arctium lappa), endive (Cichorium endivia) and mustard greens (Brassica jumcea). Based on the result of control efficacy, all crops were classified into the groups. The results showed the probabilities of extrapolating the control value data of minor crop within the same group. It would be possible to use the pesticides which are already been registered for similar crops to those crops have no registered pesticides.

Residues Analysis of Acetamiprid, Boscalid, Imidacloprid and Pyraclostrobin in the Minor Crop Mustard Green under Greenhouse Conditions for Evaluation of their Potentiality of PLS Violation

  • BACKGROUND: The demand for pesticide registration has kept increasing for minor crop cultivation in greenhouse since Positive List System (PLS) has been launched. Thus, much study on the evaluation of pesticide residues in minor crops is required to examine the demand. In this study, we evaluated residues of acetamiprid, boscalid, imidacloprid and pyraclostrobin in the minor crop mustard green to provide the potential data for their registration. METHODS AND RESULTS: Pesticide granule formulations of acetamiprid, boscalid, imidacloprid and pyraclostrobin were incorporated into soil and applied onto field soil surface at rates of 3 kg/10a, 6 kg/10a, 3 kg/10a and 6 kg/10a, respectively. The pesticides were also applied at the two times higher than the rates to compare the residues between the application rates. Mustard green seeds were sown 1 day after pesticide application and cultivated under greenhouse conditions. LC/MS/MS analyses coupled with a modified QuEChERs method were employed for determination of the pesticides in plant samples. The method limits of quantitation (LOQ) of the pesticides were 0.01 mg/kg, and the matrix calibration curves of the pesticides showed linearity with coefficient values of determination (r2) greater than 0.995. The average recovery values of the pesticides fortified in control samples at rates of LOQ and 10LOQ ranged from approximately 77.5% to 101.2% with relative standard deviation values lower than 14%. The pesticides in the mustard green samples cultivated for 53 days after sown were determined to be lower than the LOQ level. CONCLUSION: Acetamiprid, boscalid, imidacloprid and pyraclostrobin were found at a level lower than 0.01 mg/kg in the minor crop mustard green. Thus, their residues in mustard green would not violate PLS under greenhouse conditions.

Effects of Winter Cover Crop-Minor Cereal Cropping System on Weed Occurrences and Crop Growth (잡곡-피복작물 작부체계에서 잡초 발생과 작물 생장)

  • The study was conducted to evaluate the weed suppressing effects of two winter cover crops, Chinese milk vetch (CMV) and rye, in minor cereal fields in 2009. The suppressing activities of cover crops were due to the allelopathy of cover crops during weed emerging periods and competitive activity during vegetative growth of weeds. Weed suppression by cover crops were changed from 26.5 g $m^{-2}$, 0.1 g $m^{-2}$ and 0.2 g $m^{-2}$ in control, rye field and CMV field, respectively, on June 22 to 428.6 g $m^{-2}$, 1 g $m^{-2}$ and 403.9 g $m^{-2}$ in control, rye field and CMV field, respectively, on July 22. The weed dry weights were further changed to 656.3 g $m^{-2}$, 607.8 g $m^{-2}$ and 511.8 g $m^{-2}$ in control, rye field and CMV field, respectively, on August 22. The suppressing effect of cover crops also observed in minor cereals. Plant height and dry weight of sorghum was reduced to 68.7% and 33.6% of handweeding, respectively, on August 5. The reduction was recovered to 82.7% and 55.6% of control, respectively, on August 26. In addition, heading date of minor cereals was delayed by 7 days with rye.

Current Status and Perspectives of Quality Improvement in Sesame (참깨 품질 연구의 현황과 문제점 및 전망)

  • Sesame(Sesamum indicum L.) is probably the most ancient oilseed crop known in the world. The seed of sesame is used in a variety of ways as food. The whole seed may be eaten raw, either roasted or parched, or fed to birds and stock. Sesame oil is used as a salad or cooking oil, in shortening, margarine and in the manufacture of soap. Minor uses are as a fixative in the perfume industry and formerly as a carrier for fatsoluble substances in pharmaceuticals such as penicillin. One of the minor constituents of sesame oil, sesamin, is used for its synergistic effect in pyrethrin insecticides, in addition of a small quantity of this substance markedly increases the effectiveness of fly sprays. The meal remaining after oil extraction can be used as and animal feed-stuff or as manure. In general sesame meal is considered to be equal to cottonseed or soybean meal as a protein supplement for livestock and poultry. It is especially high in certain amino-acids such as methionine, which is low in soybean meal, and thus can be combined with it or similar meal to form a more balanced ration. An attempt to summarize the literature review on quality improvement of sesame was made to discuss the accomplishments of the past and perspectives in the future. The reviews on quality improvement of sesame were mainly discussed in connection with the cultural practices and genetic informations in current status. The emphasis focussed on environmental variation of quality in cultural practices, such as harvest time, variety by location, climatic condition, fertilizer application, and growth regulator treatment. On the genetic variation of quality, it was discussed on variety background, mutation breeding, correlations, and inheritance of quality related characteristics. It also was discussed on relationship between quality and plant traits, storage condition or period, and seed coat color. Moreover, current research status were reviewed on some minor elements such as sesamin, oxalic acid, and trypsin inhibitor. As a results of the review, the lack of an effort to quality improvement in each utilization area was indicated as a problem area. More active efforts for the improvement of quality were also insufficient to incorporate the available genes for quality in breeding method or collection and analysis of breeding materials. Therefore, researches in the future would be recommended to emphasize on these problem areas.

Occurrence of Sclerotinia Rot by Sclerotinia minor on Aster yomena in Korea (한국에서 Sclerotinia minor에 의한 쑥부쟁이 균핵병 발생)

  • Sclerotinia rot symptoms were frequently found on the stems of Aster yomena in the Gurye region of Korea in April 2016. The symptom, watery soft rot, mainly appeared on the stems, and severely infected plants blighted. White mycelia spread over the stems of the infected plants and the soil surface. Small black sclerotia formed on the plant lesions and inside the diseased stems. Incidence of the disease was as high as 20~80% in the A. yomena fields. Based on the morphological and molecular characteristics of the isolates, the fungi were identified as Sclerotinia minor. This is the first report of Sclerotinia rot caused by Sclerotinia minor on A. yomena in Korea.

  • In a heated rolling process of a steel mill where steel plates are pressed to a sheet coil by spreading and expanding, an irregularly-shaped head portion as well as a tail portion of the sheet coil need to be cropped. Any crop which is not clearly cut and separated from the sheet coil may cause critical damages to the facilities of the following processes. As the cropping process is performed very fast, human eyes are not proper for continuous monitoring of the cropping process. To solve this problem, we have developed a machine-vision based crop-drop detection system. The system also measures lengths of major and minor axes for the crops and thereby determines the proper crop size to minimize steel sheet losses.

Biological Activities of Phytosterols and Their Variations in Crops (작물 함유 Phytosterol의 변이와 생리활성)

  • Plant fats and oils contain phytosterols as naturally occurring constituents, which are present in pure or esterified form, or conjugated as glycosides. The predominant phytosterol is sitosterol and minor components are campesterol, stigmasterol, $\Delta^7$-avenasterol and brassicasterol. They play a key role in cell membrane function of plants as cholesterol in animals. Phytosterols have been known for many years for their properties for reducing blood cholesterol levels, as well as their other beneficial health effects for cancer preventive biological-active substances. The objective of this paper is to present a description of the recent advances in phytosterols for future research.
