  • In this paper, fingerprint minutiae mosaicking algorithm using minutiae of fingerprint is proposed. First, minutiae map is generated from minutiae of fingerprint and minutiae constellation is generated from fingerprint minutiae map. Minutiae constellation is constellation-shaped structure generated from Voronoi Diagram and Delaunay Triangulation using information of minutiae. Secondly, common region is detected by similarity of minutiae constellation of fingerprint minutiae map and minutiae map of individual fingerprint image is composed. Consequently composite minutiae map by mosaicking of fingerprint minutiae improve the performance of the fingerprint matching system.

  • In an automatic fingerprint recognition system, a thinning process after binarization is commonly used. However it gives rise to spurs and holes often causing many spurious minutiae. Thus, more elaborate postprocessing is urgently needed to remove such spurious minutiae. To overcome this problem, we present a method of extracting minutiae based on horizontal and vertical run-length encoding from a binary fingerprint image without thinning process. Experimental results show that the proposed method for extracting minutiae is fairly reliable and fast, when il is compared to other method adopting a thinning process.

  • This paper presents fingerprint authentication method based on minutiae quadrangle definded by neighboring two Delaunay triangles. In this method, we first make minutiae triangle through Delaunay triangulation which adaptively connect neighboring minutiae according to the local minutiae density distribution, and then use feature vectors in authentication which is extracted from the minutiae quadrangle formed by neighboring two minutiae triangles. This prevents the degradation of matching ratio caused by the errors in image processing or local deformation of the fingerprint, and we can authenticate more discriminately as this method reflects wider local area's topological features than the features extracted from the individual minutiae triangles. To evaluate the proposed algorithm's performance, experiment are conducted on 120 fingerprints, of which size is 256 ${\times}$ 364 with 500dpi resolution. Robust authentications are possible with low FRR.

  • This paper introduces an efficient fingerprint matching method based on multiple reference minutiae points. First, we attempt to effectively align two fingerprints by employing multiple reference minutiae points. However, the corresponding minutiae points between two fingerprints are ambiguous since a minutia of one fingerprint can be a match to any minutia of the other fingerprint. Therefore, we introduce a novel method based on linear classification concept to establish minutiae correspondences between two fingerprints. Each minutiae correspondence represents a possible alignment. For each possible alignment, a matching score is computed using minutiae and ridge orientation features and the maximum score is then selected to represent the similarity of the two fingerprints. The proposed method is evaluated using fingerprint databases, FVC2002 and FVC2004. In addition, we compare our approach with two existing methods and find that our approach outperforms them in term of matching accuracy, especially in the case of non-linear distorted fingerprints. Furthermore, the experiments show that our method provides additional advantages in low quality fingerprint images such as inaccurate position, missing minutiae, and spurious extracted minutiae.

  • Fingerprints are increasingly used for user authentication in small devices such as mobile phones. Therefore, it is important for Fingerprint authentication systems in personal devices to protect the user's fingerprint information while performing efficiently with a lightweight matching algorithm. In this paper, we propose a new method to extract strong minutiae with unique numbers from fingerprint images. Strong minutiae are at all times obtained from fingerprint images, and can be useful for secure and rapid fingerprint authentication. The binary information of strong minutiae of a fingerprint can be transformed securely and can create cancelable fingerprint templates. Also the bit-strings of strong minutiae decrease computing time necessary for the matching procedure between two fingerprints due to the simplicity of bitwise operations. First, we enroll several fingerprints images of a finger. From these images we select a reference fingerprint and put a number on each minutia. Following this procedure, we search for mated-minutiae between the reference fingerprint and other fingerprints one by one. Finally we derive unique numbers of strong minutiae of the finger. In the experiment with the FVC2004 fingerprint database, we show that using the proposed method, strong minutiae can be extracted successfully.

  • Fingerprint image enhancement and minutiae matching are two key steps in an automatic fingerprint identification system. In this paper, we propose a fingerprint recognition technique by using minutiae linking information. Recognition process have three steps ; preprocessing, minutiae extraction, matching step based on minutiae pairing. After extracting minutiae of a fingerprint from its thinned image for accuracy, we introduce matching process using minutiae linking information. Introduction of linking information into the minutiae matching process is a simple but accurate way, which solves the problem of reference minutiae pair selection with low cost in comparison stage of two fingerprints. This algorithm is invariable to translation and rotation of fingerprint. The matching algorithm was tested on 500 images from the semiconductor chip style scanner, experimental result revealed the false acceptance rate is decreased and genuine acceptance rate is increased than existing method.

  • In this paper, we propose a post-processing algorithm to remove false minutiae which decrease the overall performance of an automatic fingerprint identification system by increasing computational complexity, FAR(False Acceptance Rate), and FRR(False Rejection Rate) in matching process. The proposed algorithm extracts candidate minutiae from thinned fingerprint image. Considering characteristics of the thinned fingerprint image, the algorithm selects the minutiae that may be false and located in recoverable area. If the area where the selected minutiae reside is thinned incorrectly due to noise and loss of information, the algorithm recovers the area and the selected minutiae are removed from the candidate minutiae list. By examining the ridge pattern of the block where the candidate minutiae are found, true minutiae are recovered and in contrast, false minutiae are filtered out. In an experiment, Fingerprint images from NIST special database 14 are tested and the result shows that the proposed algorithm reduces the false minutiae extraction rate remarkably and increases the overall performance of an automatic fingerprint identification system.

  • Automatic fingerprint identification is a process of direction extraction, binarization, thinning, minutiae extraction of fingerprint identification. In this process, binarization after direction extraction affects a process of thinning and minutiae extraction. The fasle binarization is increased the false minutiae extraction rate. In this paper, we proposed more exact minutiae extraction algorithm with more enhanced binarization method, compared with traditional binarization process. We could have more enhanced results by using the direction and the half distance between ridges as the threshold of binarization process. In an experiment, Fingerprint images from NIST DBI are tested and the result shows that the proposed binarization algorithm increases minutiae extraction.

  • A simple multimodal fingerprint recognition method based on two types of feature vectors such as minutiae points and directional features is proposed, where Directional Filter Bank (DFB) is used to extract directional features. Experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively combine minutiae- and DFB-based methods and produce a better matching capability in the poor quality fingerprint image.

  • This paper presents a new matching algorithm for fingerprint recognition, which is robust to image translation. The basic idea of this paper is to estimate the translation vector of an imput fingerprint image using N minutiae at which the gradient of the ridge direction field is large. Using the estimated translation vector we select minutiae irrelevant to the translation. We experimentally prove that the presented algorithm results in good performance even if there are large translation and pseudo-minutiae.
