  • This paper proposes a performance evaluation method for power consumption of set-top box (STB) stand-by mode transition schemes. A stand-by mode transition scheme characterizes the timing of mode transition. The timing of mode transition affects the duration of stand-by mode operation, and the power consumptions of STB as well. Recently a fast stand-by mode transition scheme (FMT) has been proposed based on user input for selecting the device to be connected to TV. In this paper, we evaluate power consumption of FMT and a conventional mode transition scheme. For the computation of the duration of stand-by mode operation, the user input events are modeled as Poisson process. Simulation results based on the modeling reveals that the proposed scheme is more effective in power saving than the conventional scheme by up to 30%.

  • This paper presents a mode transition method that applies frequency compensation technique of an LLC resonant converter for stable mode transition. LLC resonant converters used in various applications require high efficiency and high power density. However, because of circuit property, a wider voltage gain range equates to a greater circuit loss, so maintaining high efficiency at all voltage gain ranges is difficult. In this case, full bridge-half bridge mode transition method can be used, which maintains high efficiency even in a wide voltage gain range. However, this method causes damage to the circuit through overcurrent by the mode transition. This study analyzes the cause of the problem and proposes a mode transition method that applies frequency compensation technique to solve the problem. The proposed method verifies the stable transition through simulation analysis and experimental results.

  • Electrodeless fluorescent lamp exhibit two modes of operation: a low density mode in which the power is capacitively coupled to the plasma and which is known as the E-mode, and a higher density mode which is an inductive discharge known as the H-mode. The transition between these two(E to H) mode exhibits hysteresis. It is observed that transition currents change at different frequencies and hysteresis exists not only between the starting and minimum maintaining currents of the electromagnetic mode (H mode) discharge but also between the starting and minimum maintaining currents of the electrostatic mode (E mode) discharge. Hysteresis effect can be important role in dimming system.

  • In this study, an automatic command mode transition strategy of direct power control (DPC) is proposed for permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) medium-voltage (MV) offshore wind turbines (WTs). Benchmarking against the control methods are performed based on a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) back-to-back type voltage source converter (VSC). The ramping rate criterion of complex power is utilized to select the switching vector in DPC for a three-level NPC converter. With a grid command and an MPPT mode transition strategy, the proposed control method automatically controls the generated output power to satisfy a grid requirement from the hierarchical wind farm controller. The automatic command mode transition strategy of DPC is confirmed through PLECS simulations based on Matlab. The simulation result of the automatic mode transition strategy shows that the proposed control method of VOC and DPC achieves a much shorter transient time of generated output power than the conventional control methods of MPPT and VOC under a step response. The proposed control method helps provide a good dynamic performance for PMSGs MV offshore WTs, thereby generating high quality output power.

  • The performance characteristics of a TBCC engine considering the transition mode from a turbojet to a ramjet engine has been investigated. The performance of each engine was proposed and a transition mode of the TBCC engine has been evaluated by adjusting the operating rate of the ramjet engine and turbojet engine performance changes continuously. Based on the transition model, it was confirmed that the performance is continuously changed at various flight Mach numbers and altitudes. The performance characteristics including thrust and specific impulse considering various flight conditions and transition mode were analyzed, which testifies characteristics of the engine itself, as well as transition of the combined cycle.

  • In this work, a new microstrip-to-substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) transition using the parallel half-mode substrate integrated waveguide (HMSIW) is proposed. The proposed transition consists of three sections : a microstrip, parallel HMSIWs, and an SIW. By inserting the parallel HMSIWs section between the microstrip section and the SIW section, the proposed transition can improve the return loss characteristics of the near cut-off frequency because the HMSIWs section has a lower cut-off frequency than the SIW section (8.6 GHz). The lower cut-off frequency is achieved through gradual electromagnetic field mode changes for a low reflection. The measured return loss is less than 20 dB in the of 9.1~16.28 GHz freqeuncy range for the back-to-back transition. The measured insertion loss is within 1.6 dB for the back-to-back transition. The proposed transition is expected to play an important role in wideband SIW circuits fed by a microstrip.

  • This paper investigated the damage transition mechanism between the fiber-breaking mode and the fiber-avoiding crack mode when the fiber-length is reduced in the unidirectional discontinuous carbon fiber-reinforced-plastics (CFRP) composites. The critical fiber-length for the transition is a key parameter for the manufacturing of flexible and high-strength CFRP composites with thermoset resin, because below this limit, we cannot take full advantage of the superior strength properties of fibers. For this discussion, we presented a numerical model for the microscopic damage and fracture of unidirectional discontinuous fiber-reinforced plastics. The model addressed the microscopic damage generated in these composites; the matrix crack with continuum damage mechanics model and the fiber breakage with the Weibull model for fiber strengths. With this numerical model, the damage transition behavior was discussed when the fiber length was varied. The comparison revealed that the length of discontinuous fibers in composites influences the formation and growth of the cluster of fiber-end damage, which causes the damage mode transition. Since the composite strength is significantly reduced below the critical fiber-length for the transition to fiber-avoiding crack mode, we should understand the damage mode transition appropriately with the analysis on the cluster growth of fiber-end damage.

  • This paper proposes a half-mode substrate integrated waveguide (HMSIW) amplifier using lumped-element transition. The input and output impedances of this amplifier are matched by the lumped-element transition structure. This structure provides compact impedance and mode matching circuits between the HMSIW and a stand-alone amplifier. Surface mount technology inductors and capacitors are implemented to realize the lumped-element transition. A prototype of the proposed HMSIW amplifier shows 15 dB gain with 3 dB bandwidth of 4 to 7.05 GHz in a simulation and measurement.

  • Direct numerical simulation (DNS) is performed to investigate suppressed wake transition and occurrence of lock-on in the wake of a circular cylinder disturbed by sinusoidal perturbation at the Reynolds number of 220 (A-mode instability regime). The sinusoidal perturbation, of which the frequency is near twice the natural shedding frequency, is superimposed on the free stream velocity. It is shown that the wake transition behind the circular cylinder can be suppressed due to the perturbation of the free stream velocity. This change causes a jump in the Strouhal number from the value corresponding to A-mode instability regime to the value corresponding to retarded wake transition regime (extrapolated from laminar shedding regime) in the Strouhal-Reynolds number relationship. As a result, vortex shedding frequency is locked on the perturbation frequency depending not on the natural shedding frequency but on the modified shedding frequency.
