  • Passive mode-locking of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser is achieved with saturable absorbers, BDN dye in iodoethane solvent and Kodak Eastman # 26 dye in 1,2-dichloroethane solvent, and its optimum conditions are investigated. The thickness of saturable absorbers employed in the laser mode-locking is 0.16~0.50mm. The PBR (peak-to-background ratio) measured in the oscilloscope is 79.8% in Kodak Eastman # 26 dye at the neighbourhood of the peak power, whereas the passive mode-locking with BDN dye gives PBR of 67.7%. BDN and Kodak Eastman # 26 dyes are superior in photostability over Kodak eastman # 9860 and # 9740 dyes which were used previously in passive mode-locking. From the PBR curve, we find that Kodak Eastman # 26dye is more effective than BDN dye in passive mode-locking. The spacing between the adjacent pulses of the pulse train, which depends on the laser cavity length, is measured and is found to be 7 nsec for the cavity length of 100cm.

  • In a recent years, a number of approaches have been studied, including passive, active, and hybrid mode-locking of semi-conductor lasers for short pulse generation and research has been devoted to achieve low timing-jitter operation since the timing jitter is unfavorable for system applications. Among the methods of mode locking, passive mode locking does not need external rf drives, and therefore the operation and fabrication procedures are simplified. In spite of these attractive advantages of passive mode-locked laser, it has critical drawbacks such as large timing jitter and the difficulty in synchronization with external circuits. Their inherent large timing jitter value was shown to be suppressed to certain levels by means of hybrid mode-locking technique$^{(1)}$ , where the saturable absorber section was modulated by an external signal with the cavity round trip frequency. Furthermore, the subharmonic mode-locking (SHML) technique alleviates the restrictions of high speed driving electronics. It has been demonstrated experimentally$^{(1)}$ that the hybrid subharmonic mode-locking technique has lead to significant reduction of the timing jitter. (omitted)

  • We report hybrid and passive mode-locking results of tilted-stripe AlGaAs semiconductor laser traveling wave amplifiers with saturable absorbers. Dependence ofthe pulse width on the mode locking frequency, the bandwidth of spectral filters, and the bias current of the laser amplifier are investigated. We generate 4 ps optical pulses by using the hybrid mode locking technique. The repetition rate and the peak power of generated pulses are 516 MHz and 170 mW, respectively. The tuning range of uor mode locked laser is 10 nm with the center wavelength of 780 nm. We also generate 2.6 ps optical pulses with peak power of 830 mW by using the passive mode locking technique.

  • I propose a vector passive harmonic mode-locked fiber laser based on topological insulator Bi2Se3 interacting with a fiber taper with a diameter of 7 μm. The particles of topological insulator are deposited uniformly onto the fiber taper with light pressure effect. By incorporating the fabricated saturable absorber into an Er-doped fiber laser cavity, stable mode-locked fiber is obtained. Due to the intense evanescent field of the fiber taper, strong confinement of light enhances the nonlinearity of the laser cavity, and passive harmonic mode-locking is performed. I observe a maximum harmonic mode-locking of 356th, corresponding to a frequency of 3.57 GHz. The pulse duration is 824 fs, and the full width at half maximum of the spectrum is about 8.2 nm. The polarization dependent loss of the saturable absorber is ~ 2.5 dB in the wavelength range of the C band. As the cavity contains no other polarization dependent device, the mode-locked laser is functioning in the vector state. The harmonic order vs pump power is investigated. To the best of our knowledge, this report is the highest frequency mode-locked fiber laser based on Bi2Se3. Experimental results indicate that the topological insulator Bi2Se3 functioning with a thin fiber taper is effective for vector harmonic mode-locking.

  • In this investigation, we constructed and demonstrated a simple Yb-doped fiber laser, of which longitudinal modes are mode-locked without any additional devices to compensate the dispersion caused by optical components. Non-linear polarization rotation (NPR) was adopted for the mode-locking mechanism and a polarization controller (PC) was used for a kind of spectral filters to restrict the bandwidth for mode-locking. As the result, the laser was successfully operated as mode-locked with the repetition rate of 42.2 MHz and the spectrum was broadened up to approximately 16 nm at 1033 nm center wavelength when the laser was mode-locked. In this paper, the operation of the developed Yb-doped mode-locked laser is explained with the concept of Lyot filter realized by a PC, which enables mode-locking under normal dispersion. In the industrial applications, this laser can be used as a seed laser of the high power lasers for optical manufacturing.

  • The eight-node 3D solid element is one of the most extensively used elements in computational mechanics. This is due to its simple shape and easy of discretization. However, due to the parasitic shear locking, it should not be used to simulate the behaviour of structural members in bending dominant conditions. Previous researches have indicated that the introduction of incompatible mode into the displacement field of the solid element could significantly reduce the shear locking phenomenon. In this study, an incompatible mode eight-node solid element, which considers both geometric and material nonlinearities, is developed for modelling of structural members at elevated temperatures. An algorithm is developed to extend the state determination procedure at ambient temperature to elevated temperatures overcoming initially converged stress locking when the external load is kept constant. Numerical studies show that this incompatible element is superior in terms of convergence, mesh insensitivity and reducing shear locking. It is also showed that the solid element model developed in this paper can be used to model structural behaviour at both ambient and elevated temperatures.

  • Figure '8' type, passively-mode-locked erbium-doped-fiber ring laser was developed, incorporating a nonlinear loop mirror. Transmittance of the loop mirror was found to be dependent on the incident light intensity due to the non-reciprocal nonlinear phase shift, which enables the passive mode locking of the laser. Self-starting of stable mode locking was possible with only controlling the polarization controllers inside the cavity without any help of external perturbation or modulation. The mode-locked output pulse shape was discussed in relation with the transmission characteristics of nonlinear loop mirror.

  • We demonstrate passive mode-locking of a Cr:forsterite laser with a single-walled carbon nanotube saturable absorber mirror (SWCNT-SAM). Without compensation of intra-cavity dispersion, the self-mode-locked laser generates 11.7 ps pulses at a repetition rate of 86 MHz. The dispersion-compensated laser yields ultrashort pulses as short as 80 fs near $1.25\;{\mu}m$ at 78 MHz with average output powers up to 295 mW, representing the highest power ever reported for mode-locked solid-state lasers based on saturable absorption of SWCNTs in this spectral region.
