Genetic Structure of the Jellyfish Rhopilema esculentum (Scyphozoa: Rhizostomatidae) in Korean Coastal Waters

  • The edible jellyfish Rhopilema esculentum occurs in waters throughout northeastern Asia, including in Korea, China, and Japan. In Korean waters, R. esculentum has appeared in two regions (Gangwha and Muan). Based on the appearance of young medusae and coastal distribution records, these two regions may be key R. esculentum breeding sites. In the present study, we investigate and compare the genetic structure of R. esculentum in the two regions using mitochondrial sequences (16S ribosomal RNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I). The genetic diversity of the R. esculentum population at Ganghwa exceeded that of the population at Muan. Despite considerable geographic separation (400 km) between the two regions(Gangwha and Muan), our haplotype network suggests that the Gangwha and Muan populations of R. esculentum are related. The simple and monotonous genetic structure of the Muan population shows that R. esculentum emergence is relatively recent. In contrast, the Gangwha population shows evolution. Moreover, jellyfish of the Gangwha population are genetically diverse and remain constant despite environmental fluctuations in the Han River. The Gangwha area is considered to be the old origin of R. esculentum in Korea.

Infection Status of Estuarine Fish and Oysters with Intestinal Fluke Metacercariae in Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do, Korea

  • The source of human infection with intestinal flukes was surveyed in estuarine fishes, including the dotted gizzard shad, common sea bass, common blackish goby, redlip mullet, black sea bream, and oyster collected from Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do, Korea during August and September 2007. Collected fishes and oysters were artificially digested in pepsin-HCl solution and examined under a stereomicroscope. In 36 shads (Konosirus punctatus) and 20 basses (Lateolabrax japonicus) examined, Heterophyopsis continua metacercariae were found in 58.3% and 100%, and their average numbers were 12.0 and 6.3 per infected fish, respectively. In 34 gobies (Acanthogobius flavimanus) examined, metacercariae of H. continua were detected in 79.4%, Stictodora lari in 97.1%, and Acanthotrema felis in 92.1%, and their average numbers were 45.8, 189.3, and 235.3 per infected fish, respectively. In 37 redlip mullets (Chelon haematocheilus), Heterophyes nocens metacercariae were found in 56.8%, Pygidiopsis summa in 94.6%, and Stictodora fuscata in 45.9%, and the average metacercarial densities were 17.4, 31.3, and 35.1 per infected fish, respectively. In 30 black sea breams (Acanthopagrus schlegeli) and 45 oysters (Crassostrea gigas) examined, no metacercariae were detected. From the above results, it has been confirmed that the dotted gizzard shad, common sea bass, common blackish goby, and redlip mullet from Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do, Korea are infected with the metacercariae of heterophyid flukes.

  • Benthic animals are important indicators in benthic environmental quality assessment. This study investigated the environmental characteristics and the distribution pattern of benthic animals, and assessed the benthic ecosystem using AMBI (AZTI's marine biotic index) and WQI (water quality index) in the subtidal zone of Muan bay. Samplings were collected from 10 stations in the subtidal zone of Muan bay on summer. In the upper area of Muan bay, grain size was finer and organic content was higher than those of in the lower area. The pollution indicator organism such as Musculista senhousia, Theora fragilis and Lumbrineris longifolia were dominant at some stations. The benthic community was distinguished into three groups of upper, center and lower area of Muan bay, and which were coincided with the results by correlation analysis between organic matter content and benthic health assessment (WQI and AMBI). As a result of this study, the health condition of the subtidal zone in Muan bay were good. However, from the results that benthic animals were not evenly distributed, and also the opportunistic species appeared, the load of organic matter in Muan bay seems to be increasing.

Productivity of Native White Lotus Leaves and Root Grown in Hoesan, Muan of Jeonnam Districts (전남 무안 회산지 자생 백련의 잎과 연근의 생산력)

  • This study was conducted to examine the yield of lotus leaves and roots per one native white lotus grown in Hoesan, Muan of Jeonnam districts, which were promoted by Muan-Gun, Jeonnam as a local speciality. We planted the rhizomes with 2 internodes in a rubber pot in the middle of April. Then on September, 24, 2008, we dug out the main rhizomes and it had grown by 810cm. From the data, the leaf area was $34,442\;cm^2$, the fresh leaf weight was 1,230g, and the dry leaf weight was 235.4g. The weight of the edible fresh stalk and dry weight leaf were 1,325g and 164.3g. Yield of the white lotus root were 1,480g on Sept. 4, 3,880g on Sept. 20 and 4,172g on Oct. 18. Native white lotus are able to be harvested early as September, however, it is be better that it is harvested in the middle of October based on the yield.

Criteria and Evaluation of Local Tidal Flats for Designating Conservation Sites in the Southwestern Coast of Korea (보호지역 지정을 위한 갯벌의 평가기준 개발과 전남 지역갯벌의 평가)

  • Designating conservation sites is needed for the preservation and management of tidal flats, and also objective criteria, by which preservation values of tidal flats can be evaluated, are required to designate conservation sites. A set of new evaluation criteria or tidal flats was suggested in this study. The criteria, based on six items including scarcity, diversity, naturalness, uniqueness, destruction possibility and preservation will, ave the advantages with which easy and economic assessments are possible by using basic data from the preceding studies. The evaluation results for the three different tidal lats (Muan, Jeungdo-1 and Jeungdo-2) in the southwestern coast of Korea reveal that all he tidal flats evaluated are classified into grade 2. The tidal flat which got the highest valuation score was Jeungdo-1 tidal flat (86.7), and the next was Muan (85.0) and Jeungdo-2 (82.5). The Jeungdo-2 tidal flat was superior in uniqueness and destruction possibility, and the Muan tidal flat was superior in diversity and naturalness.

Distribution of Macrobenthos at the Mudflat in the Mouth of Muan Bay (무안만 초입 인근 갯벌의 대형저서동물 분포 특성)

  • Macrobenthos composes the dominant biomass at the mudflat and play an important role in the maintenance of the benthic environments. Organic matter in sedimentary environment affects habitat, feeding behaviors, and survival of benthos. In this study, the relationship between organic matter content in sediment and the distribution of macrobenthos was discussed at two margins (Mokpo and Aphae area) in the mouth of Muan bay. Sediment TOC was higher at Mokpo than at Aphae through the four seasons, and the pollution indicator organism Musculista senhousia was dominant in this area. The macrobenthos distribution was clearly divided into two areas correlated with sediment organic matter content in the mouth of Muan bay.

  • Muan Enterprise City is a mega-project that has an investment worth up to $3 billion only in the construction of infrastructure. The project's success will largely depend on the success of its construction management. This study sets out to establish a construction management plan for Muan Enterprise City by defining the core objectives and organizational structure and its supporting system. Project outline and core objectives were analyzed, and necessity of construction management and processes evaluated. Based on this analysis, implementation strategy for the achievement of project goals was defined and developed, and organizational structure and its support system to execute established. This study strives to support the project's construction management being carried out under proper planning and possibly set an example for construct ion management of mega-structures in the future. Combining Ability and Genetic Analysis of Boll Characters in Cotton(G. Hirsulum L) (목화 (G. hirsulum L.)의 삭 형질에 대한 조합능력과 유전분석)

  • A six parent dialled analysis was conducted to get basic information for improving yield of upland cotton. Heterosis, combining ability, genetic components and correlation coefficients for boll length, boll width, boll weight, 100 seed weight, lint weigth per boll and lint percentage were studied. Estimates of heterosis for all characters and heterobeltiosis for boll weight and lint weight per boll showed positive values. In general combining ability effect, 'Muan' and 'Imsung' showed highely positive effect in all characters. In specific combining ability effect, the combinations of 'Seungju${\times}$Imsung$.$Seosan${\times}$Imsung' for bll length, 'Cheju${\times}$Imsung$.$Seung${\times}$Imsung' for boll width, 'Cheju${\times}$Muan$.$Cheju${\times}$Imsung' for boll weight, 'Cheju${\times}$Soonchun$.$Muan${\times}$Imsung' for 100 seed weight, 'Soonchun${\times}$Muan' for lint weight per boll and 'Soonchun${\times}$Seosan$.$Seungju${\times}$Muan' for lint percentage showed highly positive effect. Partial dominance was observed for boll length, boll weight, 100 seed weight and lint weight per boll, complete dominance for boll width and overdominance for lint percentage. The number of effective gene group was estimated as one for all characters. The estimates of narrow and broad sense heritabilities were high for all characters except as one for all characters. The estimates of narrow and broad sense heritabilities were high for all characters except lint percentage. Correlation coefficients among the boll length, boll width, boll weight, 100 seed weight and lint weight per boll were positive, whereas lint percentage was negatively correlated with other characters.

Epidemiological Survey on the Infection of Intestinal Flukes in Residents of Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do, the Republic of Korea

  • Infection status of intestinal flukes was investigated in residents of Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do, the Republic of Korea. Total 1,257 fecal samples of residents were examined by formalin-ether sedimentation technique and Kato-Katz thick smear method. Helminth eggs were detected from 95 (7.6%) residents, and eggs of heterophyid flukes and Clonorchis sinensis were found from 62 (4.9%) and 40 (3.2%) cases, respectively. The larger heterophyid eggs, somewhat darkbrown in color and $37.7{\times}21.5{\mu}m$ in average size, and found in 32 (2.6%) out of 62 egg positive cases of heterophyid flukes. To confirm the adult flukes, we performed worm recovery from 12 cases after praziquantel treatment and purgation with $MgSO_4$. A total of 1,281 adult flukes, assigned to 7 species, were recovered from 9 cooperative cases. Heterophyes nocens (total 981 specimens) was collected from 9 cases, Stictodora fuscata (80) from 7, Gymnophalloides seoi (75) from 5, Pygidiopsis summa (140) from 3, Stellantchasmus falcatus (3) from 2, and Stictodora lari and Acanthotrema felis (each 1 worm) from 1 case each. The intrauterine eggs of S. fuscata collected from the recovered worm were identical with the larger heterophyid eggs detected in the stool examination. By the present study, it was confirmed that A. felis is a new intestinal fluke infecting humans, and residents in Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do are infected with variable species of intestinal trematodes.

Phylogenic Analysis of Locusta migratoria (Orthoptera: Acridae) in Haenam-gun and Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do, Korea Using Mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunits (전라남도 해남과 무안의 풀무치 개체군에 대한 마이토콘드리아 NADH dehydrogenase subunit 들을 이용한 계통분석)

  • In a nationwide survey of the occurrence and density of the migratory locust (Locusta migratoria), high density was continuously observed in the reclaimed areas of Mangun-myeon in Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do, and Sanye-myeon in Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, Korea. We have analyzed the nucleotide sequences of NADH dehydrogenase subunit (NAD) 2, NAD4, and NAD5 genes in order to determine the origins of the migratory locusts at two sites. According to the analysis, the migratory locusts in Haenam-gun were closely related with those in Liaoning Province and Heilongjiang Province in the northeast China. In contrast, the migratory locusts in Muan-gun were most similar to those in Japan. Because Korean migratory locusts were not included in the previous global study on the evolution and migration of migratory locusts, we did not know the origin of Korean migratory locusts, earlier. Phylogenetic analyses this study suggested that the migratory locusts from the northeast Chinese population might have migrated and settled in Haenam-gun in Korea. Moreover, another northeast Chinese population might have migrated to Muan-gun in Korea though Sakhalin, Russia and Hokkaido, Japan. However, the possibility that the migratory locusts moved from northeast China might be isolated from each other in Korea, and that the Muan population might migrate to Japan cannot be excluded.
