  • Multiplex movie cinemas are cultural spaces where an indefinite number of people from a variety of classes and ages can enjoy movies, food, and leisure all together in one place at the same time. Those facilities which a great number of people use together like multiplex movie theaters are relatively vulnerable to fire safety, compared with other facilities to protect from fire. Considering the special nature and vulnerability of multiplex movie theaters from a fire safety standpoint, this study aims to seek measures to acquire fire safety performance of the specific facilities by selecting exemplary models of local multiplex movie theaters, performing fire and evacuation simulations for them, and reviewing and analyzing their present problems in evacuation safety as well as the relevant regulations of many countries.

Among the types of value perception of offline movie viewers, practicality had the strongest influence on brand image construction, and self-faithfulness had the strongest influence on purchase satisfaction of offline movie watching. In addition, the brand image of offline movie theaters had a positive(+) effect on the purchase satisfaction of moviegoers. • This study is intended for demonstrating the impacts of different factors on the formation of online consumer engagement behavior of young Chinese moviegoer in Korea. Based on Value-Exchange Model [Itani et al., 2019], we build research model to reveal the relationships among perceived enjoyment, perceived movie information value, multiplex-audience relationship quality, multiplex usage satisfaction, and online consumer engagement through experiments on valid data we collected from 186 participants who had lived in Korea and experienced the multiplex pages of top 3 movie theaters, where Smart PLS 3.0 is the tool used for statistical analysis. The experimental results show that both perceived enjoyment and perceived movie information value positively correlate to multiplex-audience relationship quality, and multiplex audience relationship quality significantly influences multiplex usage satisfaction and online consumer engagement. In addition, it is found that relationship quality plays the role of mediator between perceived enjoyment and satisfaction. The findings from this study offer both academic and managerial implications for movie distributors who are interested in developing potential Chinese consumer market in Korea.

  • Korea's film industry has been growing over the last 10 years, and there has been much attention to the antecedents of film box office sales both academic and business communities. So far, previous research which explained success factors of film or movie mainly focused on 3 stages, production, distribution and screening. However, these 3 steps are heavily vertically integrated in Korea's firm industry unlike United States. Almost 130% of movie theaters are multiplex chain and operated by film production companies such as CJ and Lotte Entertainment In this situation, film sales are likely to he affected by movie theaters own facilities or location factors rather than movie contents. Based. on resource-based view and S-C-P paradigm, the authors examined "whether movie theater's facilities factors and trade area factors such as accessibility, competitive situation, and population have effect to movie theater's sales revenues. The results showed that the average occupancy of theater is the most important factor to movie theaters sales in both large and small cities. In large cities, movie theater's facilities factors which included vibration seat special sound system, premium movie theater, VIP lounge are relatively important than trade area factors. In contrast, in small cities, location factors and accessibility are the most important factors to movie theaters sales. We discuss the managerial and theoretical implication for the results and the specific limitations are suggested at the end of the paper.

  • The current distribution structure in Korea film industry is in the multiplex chain. As a result, most small or medium-sized theaters have been excluded from the market, and all the multiplex chain have gradually been formed into the vertical integration structure. The strike by multiplex theaters in Chuncheon who did not screen for one month led to the problem of the vertical integration, which resulted in many effects. Particularly, it caused considerable effect on the cultural desire and instigated movie-goers to turn to illegal content. This study surveys the process in which Korean multiplex theaters in vertical integration structure took over the Korean film market, and consequently, small theaters collapsed, and the theaters in vertical integration structure kick out small theaters in horizontal integration structure, and conducts a survey on the effect of the one-month strike by Chuncheon CGV from September 27 to October 30, 2008 in Chuncheon where said processes had completed so as to determine the effect of and impact of the problem of the vertical integration, monopoly structure. When major consumers of the film industry, i.e., people in their 20s, see their access to newly released films limited due to closing of multiplex theaters, they feel the impulse to access illegal contents. If they miss viewing the newly released films, they prefer to view illegal contents or films on recording media rather than visiting theaters showing those films. They are also influenced by timing of film release. Specifically, methods of illegal access to newly released films, permanent accessibility to them via recording media, and timing of film release influence their viewing patterns.

  • With the multiplex and wide release strategy, the monopolies of four major distribution companies and three multiplex chain, the polarization of Korean movie's Box Office performance is deepening. The four major distributor of NEW, CJ CGV, Lotte Cinema distributed 290 movies of 538 movies produced from 2009 to 2014 in Korea. The audience market share of these four distributors is 85.74%, while other 248 movies covers only 14.26%, which are distributed by outsides of the four major distribution system. The concentration of film admission has been deepened in Gini Index from 0.53 in 2004 to 0.85 in 2014. The movies distributed by others rather than four major companies suffers inequality in numbers of secured screens, screening times, and secured seats of movie theaters. In the highest 10% of box-office ranking, there is only one movie distributed by others. The lowest 50% of box-office ranking, there are 186 movies by others, while four companies have 81 movies. However, Occupancy rate of seat of major companies is lower than 16.83% of that of the others in the lowest 50% section. Workers of Korean movie industry are suffered from this polarization and they seek their breakthrough by producing erotic movies for VOD in recent years.
