  • Music functions as a catalyst for various emotional experiences. Among the numerous genres of music, film music has been reported to induce strong emotional responses. However, the effectiveness of film music in evoking different types of emotions and its relationship in terms of which musical elements contribute to listeners' perception of intended emotion have been rarely investigated. The purpose of this study was to examine the congruence between the intended emotion and the perceived emotion of listeners in film music listening and to identify musical characteristics of film music that correspond with specific types of emotion. Additionally, the study aimed to investigate possible relationships between participants' identification responses and personal musical experience. A total of 147 college students listened to twelve 15-second music excerpts and identified the perceived emotion during music listening. The results showed a high degree of congruence between the intended emotion in film music and the participants' perceived emotion. Existence of tonality and modality were found to play an important role in listeners' perception of intended emotion. The findings suggest that identification of perceived emotion in film music excerpts was congruent regardless of individual differences. Specific music components that led to high congruence are further discussed.

Homogeneity test and distribution of high risk and low risk were analyzed using Chi-test and the effect of listening to music on job stress was analyzed using t-test with SPSS 22.0 program. The experimental group showed a decreased job stress more significantly than the control group. Therefore, job stress intervention program should be developed and practical and systematical approach to reduce the job stress using music listening aggressively should be prepared in the future based on this study's result.

  • This study aimed to investigate the relationship between music listening and mood regulation. The effects of personality traits, music education, and sex on music use for mood regulation were also examined. Participants were 529 undergraduate students who completed the Korean Music in Mood Regulation Scale, Interpersonal Personality Item Pool (IPIP), Positive Affect and Negative Affect Schedule, and a questionnaire on their music education. Correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and t tests were conducted to explore the relationship among the measured variables. The results showed that music listening was related to enhancement of positive mood but not improvement of negative mood. Participants who had received extracurricular music education were more likely to use music listening as a strategy to regulate their mood than were participants without music education. Women were more likely to use music for mood regulation than were men. The multiple regression results indicate that individuals who rated themselves highly on Agreeableness and Openness to Experience on the IPIP were more likely to listen to music for mood regulation. These findings stress that music listening can be an effective strategy for mood regulation, which is critical for one's emotional well-being. It also indicates that effective music use as a mood regulation strategy varies depending on one's personal characteristics and history of music education.

On the basis of the research criterias, 46 patients were recruited from Kang-Nam St. Mary's Hospital in Seoul from October 1 to December 31, 1995. 20 patients of them were participated as the experimental group who received musical listening session with self-selected music tapes, while 26 patients as the control group who didn't receive that session. The musical listening sessions composed of 3 periods, the pre-operation evening, just before sleeping, the operation morning. There were no differences between two groups, in terms of age education, religion, the experience of operation, the perception of uterus, and the weight(%). The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI) was used to measure anxiety on all patients. And serum cortisol levels, fasting blood sugar levels, systolic and diastolic blood pressure were collected at the day before surgery and the operation day. The results were as follows : 1. There were no significant differences in State-Anxiety between the two groups. 2. The differences of serum cortisol level between the day before surgery and the operative day were significantly lower in experimental group than in control group(P=0.03). 3. The level of fasting blood sugar was significantly decreased in experimental group(P=0.01). 4. Systolic blood pressure level was significantly decreased in experimental group(P=0.02). While Diastolic blood pressure level was not significant between two groups. It is suggested imply that the musical listening during the perioperative period may alleviate the perioperative anxiety levels in patients undergoing abdominal hysterectomy.
