  • The microscopic dynamics of $CsH_2PO_4$, with two distinct hydrogen bond lengths, are studied by static nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR. The proton dynamics of the two crystallographically inequivalent hydrogen sites were discussed in terms of the $^1H$ NMR and $^1H$ MAS NMR spectra. Although the hydrogen bonds have two inequivalent sites, H(1) and H(2), distinct proton dynamics for the two sites were not found. Further, the $^{133}Cs$ spectrum is more or less continuous near $T_{C1}$ (=153 K). Finally, the phase transition mechanism of $T_{C1}$ in $CsH_2PO_4$ is related to the ordering of protons.

  • Biosupramolecular systems such as biological membranes usually fluid under physiological conditions$^1$. Therefore, solid-state NMR has been used to investigate biosupramolecular systems. But solid-state NMR spectra contain a large number of overlapping resonances and are rather difficult to analyze. These problem has to be overcome by selective isotope labeling. We constructed a deuterium NMR probe for AM400 NMR spectrometer, which is mainly used for liquid samples. To overcome the fluidity problem, a saddle type coil was designed. The efficiency was systematically investigated for two kinds of coil geometry, solenoid and saddle types. Our results suggest that solenoids are superior to saddle type coils in the sensitivity. However, the letter fits better to fluid samples such as biosupramolecular systems.

  • SNIF-NMR is one of the analytical methods used to discriminate impurities in food and natural products. To determine the origin of compounds, SNIF-NMR utilizes frequency of deuterium in site specific fractionated sample using nuclear magnetic resonance. Also, SNIF-NMR is currently used to evaluate the authenticity of various foods such as wine, vanillin and oil, and is known to provide more accurate information than other analytical methods. In this review, the basic principles and practical examples of SNIF-NMR is presented.

  • Although NMR technique has been using in many areas of chemistry, its merit on quantitative analysis seems not to acknowledge greatly because of the many inferior intrinsic aspects, particularly its sensitivity. Recently, new NMR techniques, high-field NMR, and demands for cutting edge techniques of analysis, however, seem to change the role of NMR spectroscopy in this field. This review shows the application of NMR development in quantitative analysis and will discuss the basic idea, limitations, and pitfalls. Then it will show you several successful applications applied in quantitative analysis and you will see how useful and accurate method it is.

  • Membrane proteins play a essential role in the biological systems and it is not easy to handle a membrane protein for its structural study. Solid-state NMR (ssNMR) can be a good tool to investigate the structures and dynamics of membrane proteins. In ssNMR, Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) and Cross Polarization (CP) can be utilized to reduce the line-broadening, leading to high resolution and sensitivity in the spectrum. ssNMR, if combined with other spectroscopic methods, can provide us a enough knowledge on structures and dynamics of membrane proteins in biological condition.

  • A general expression using the nonmultipole expansion method is derived for the NMR shift arising from 3d electron angular momentum and the 3d electron spin dipolar-nuclear spin angular momentum interactions for a 3$d^2$ system in a strong crystal field environment of octahedral symmetry when the threefold axis is chosen as the quantization axis. The NMR shift is separated to the contribution of constant, $1/R^5\;and\;1/R^7$ terms and compared with the multipolar terms. We find that $1/R^5$ term contributes dominantly to the NMR shift but the contribution of $1/R^7$ term may not be negligible. It is also found that the exact values of the NMR shift are in agreement with the multipolar results for distances larger than 0.35 nm.

  • Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) is one of the most popular solid-state spin systems for quantum sensing. NV has been used for vector magnetometry with nanometer spatial resolution and sensors for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in samples with small volume, less than 10 pL. Various studies are in progress to make NV a complementary sensor for current NMR technique. Fabricating and improving diamond itself are one of the research topics. This mini-review contains recent develops in diamond fabrication and treatment for higher NV yield. Additionally, we briefly introduce the development status of NV in NMR.

  • Parahydrogen induced hyperpolarization (PHIP) technique is extensively studied to increase the sensitivity of the conventional NMR spectroscopy and recently try to apply this advanced technique into the revolutionary future of the MRI. The other hyperpolarization technique, which is widely utilized, is DNP (Dynamic Nuclear Polarization)-based hyperpolarization one. Despite its great advances in these fields, it contains several drawbacks to overcome: fast relaxation time, expensive equipment is needed, long build-up time is required (several hours), and batch scale material is hyperpolarized. To overcome all those limitations, one can effectively harness the hyperpolarized spin state of parahydrogen. One important step for utilizing the spin state of parahydrogen is doing well-developed experiments of ALTADENA and PASADENA. Based on those concepts, we successfully obtain the hydrogenation signals of ALTADENA and PASADENA from styrene by using benchtop NMR spectrometer. Also those signals were conceptually analyzed and confirmed with different mechanisms. To our best knowledge, those experiments using 1.4T (benchtop NMR) is the first reported one. Considering these experiments, we hope that parahydrogen-based hyperpolarization transfer studies in NMR/MRI will be broadened in Korea in the future.

  • Quantum dot (QD) is an emerging novel nanomaterial that has wide applicability and superior functionality with relatively low cost. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has been contributed to elucidate various features of QDs and to improve their overall performance. In particular, NMR spectroscopy becomes an essential analytical tool to monitor and analyze organic ligands on the QD surface. In the present mini-review, application of NMR spectroscopy as a superb methodology to appreciate organic ligands is discussed. In addition, it was recently noted that ligands exert rather greater influence on diverse features of QDs than our initial anticipation, for which contribution of NMR spectroscopy is briefly reviewed.
