Thin film electrode consisting purely of porous anodic tin oxide with well-defined nano-channeled structure was fabricated for the first time and its electrochemical properties were investigated for application to an anode in a rechargeable lithium battery. To prepare the thin film electrode, first, a bi-layer of porous anodic tin oxides with well-defined nano-channels and discrete nano-channels with lots of lateral micro-cracks was prepared by pulsed and continuous anodization processes, respectively. Subsequent to the Cu coating on the layer, well-defined nano-channeled tin oxide was mechanically separated from the specimen, leading to an electrode comprised of porous tin oxide and a Cu current collector. The porous tin oxide nearly maintained its initial nano-structured character in spite of there being a series of fabrication steps. The resulting tin oxide film electrode reacted reversibly with lithium as an anode in a rechargeable lithium battery. Moreover, the tin oxide showed far more enhanced cycling stability than that of powders obtained from anodic tin oxides, strongly indicating that this thin film electrode is mechanically more stable against cycling-induced internal stress. In spite of the enhanced cycling stability, however, the reduction in the initial irreversible capacity and additional improvement of cycling stability are still needed to allow for practical use.

$SnO_2$ has a high potential for electric and electronic applications. We have anodized pure tin metal and nano porous tin oxide film was obtained on pure Sn. Nano porous tin oxide were grown by anodization in nonaqueous-base electrolytes at different potentials between 5 V and 100 V. Pore size of ~100nm was observed by FE-SEM. Pore sizes as a function of applied voltage and anodizing time were characterized. We obtained nano porous tin oxide film having an uniform pore size at low temperature. High specific surface area of $SnO_2$ will be very useful for gas sensor, lithium battery, and dye sensitized solar cell.

NiO films and Ru co-sputtered NiO films were deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering for micro-solid oxide fuel cell anode applications. The deposited films were reduced to form porous films. The reduction kinetics of the Ru doped NiO film was more sluggish than that of the NiO film, and the resulting microstructure of the former exhibited finer pore networks. The possibility of using the films for the anodes of single chamber micro-SOFCs was investigated using an air/fuel mixed environment. It was found that the abrupt increase in the resistance is suppressed in the Ru co-sputtered film, as compared to undoped film.

Cupric oxide (CuO) is a p-type semiconductor with band gap of ~1.7 eV and reported to be suitable for catalysis, lithium-copper oxide electrochemical cells, and gas sensors applications. The nanoparticles, plates and nanowires of CuO were found sensing to NO2, H2S and CO. In this work, we report about the comparison about hydrogen sensing of nano thin film and nanowires structured CuO deposited on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The thin film and nanowires are synthesized by deposition of Cu on different substrate followed by oxidation process. Nano thin films of CuO are deposited on thermally oxidized silicon substrate, whereas nanowires are synthesized by using a porous thin film of SWNTs as substrate. The hydrogen sensing properties of synthesized materials are investigated. The results showed that nanowires cupric oxide deposited on SWNTs showed higher sensitivity to hydrogen than those of nano thin film CuO did.
A nano-porous structure of tin oxide was prepared using an anodic oxidation process and the sample's electrochemical properties were evaluated for application as an anode in a rechargeable lithium battery. Microscopic images of the as-anodized sample indicated that it has a nano-porous structure with an average pore size of several tens of nanometers and a pore wall size of about 10 nanometers; the structural/compositional analyses proved that it is amorphous stannous oxide (SnO). The powder form of the as-anodized specimen was satisfactorily lithiated and delithiated as the anode in a lithium battery. Furthermore, it showed high initial reversible capacity and superior rate performance when compared to previous fabrication attempts. Its excellent electrode performance is probably due to the effective alleviation of strain arising from a cycling-induced large volume change and the short diffusion length of lithium through the nano-structured sample. To further enhance the rate performance, the attempt was made to create porous tin oxide film on copper substrate by anodizing the electrodeposited tin. Nevertheless, the full anodization of tin film on a copper substrate led to the mechanical disintegration of the anodic tin oxide, due most likely to the vigorous gas evolution and the surface oxidation of copper substrate. The adhesion of anodic tin oxide to the substrate, together with the initial reversibility and cycling stability, needs to be further improved for its application to high-power electrode materials in lithium batteries.

Electron Beam Physical Vapor Deposition (EB-PVD) was applied to fabricate a thin film YSZ electrolyte with large area on the porous NiO-YSZ anode substrate. Microstructural and thermal stability of the as-deposited electrolyte film was investigated via SEM and XRD analysis. In order to obtain an optimized YSZ film with high stability, both temperature and surface roughness of substrate were varied. A structurally homogeneous YSZ film with large area of $12\times12\;cm^2$ and high thermal stability up to $900^{\circ}C$ was fabricated at the substrate temperature of $T_s/T_m$ higher than 0.4. The smoother surface was proved to give the better film quality. Precise control of heating and cooling rate of the anode substrate was necessary to obtain a very dense YSZ electrolyte with high thermal stability, which affords to survive after post heat treatment for fabrication a cathode layer on it as well as after long time operation of solid oxide fuel cell at high temperature.
MAO (micro-arc oxidation) is an eco-friendly convenient and effective technology to deposit high-quality oxide coatings on the surfaces of Ti, Al, Mg and their alloys. The roles of the electrolyte concentration and relative cathode electrode area sizes in the grown oxide film during titanium MAO were investigated. The higher the concentration of the electrolyte, the lower the $R_{total}A$ value. The oxide film produced by the lower concentration of the electrolyte is thinner and less uniform than the film by the higher concentration, which is thick and porous. The cathode area size must be bigger than the anode area size in order to minimize the voltage drop across the cathode. The ratio of the cathode area size to the anode area size must be bigger than 8. Otherwise, the cathode will be another source for voltage drop, which is detrimental to and slows down the oxide growth.
Titanium dioxide thin films were fabricated as hydrogen sensors and its sensing properties were tested. The titanium was deposited on a $SiO_2$/Si substrate by the DC magnetron sputtering method and was oxidized at an optimized temperature of $850^{\circ}C$ in air. The titanium film originally had smooth surface morphology, but the film agglomerated to nano-size grains when the temperature reached oxidation temperature where it formed titanium oxide with a rutile structure. The oxide thin film formed by grains of tens of nanometers size also showed many short cracks and voids between the grains. The response to 1% hydrogen gas was ${\sim}2{\times}10^6$ at the optimum sensing temperature of $200^{\circ}C$, and ${\sim}10^3$ at room temperature. This extremely high sensitivity of the thin film to hydrogen was due partly to the porous structure of the nano-sized sensing particles. Other sensor properties were also examined.

The interest of self-organization materials that have uniform and regular structure in nano scale has been grown due to their utilization in various fields of nanotechnology. An attractive candidate among these materials is anodic aluminum oxide film, which are formed by anodization of aluminum in an appropriate acid solution. The anodic aluminum oxide film has a highly ordered porous structure with very uniform and nearly parallel pores that can be organized in an almost precise close-packed hexagonal structure. In this study, we attempt to make Au dot arrays, which were fabricated using anodic aluminum oxide film as an evaporation mask. The Au dot arrays have a uniform sized dots and spacing to its neighbors and the average diameter of Au dots is about 60 nm corresponding to them of the mask.

Zirconium oxide ($ZrO_2$) nano porous membranes were fabricated by electrochemical two-step anodization with an electropolished zirconium substrate in inorganic water-based and organic electrolyte systems containing small amounts of fluoride. Using two-step anodization and organic electrolytes, highly regular and ordered nanotubular $ZrO_2$ oxide layers can be compared with aqueous electrolytes. The morphology and size of the nano porous layers were characterized by FE-SEM (field emission scanning electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), and EDS (energy dispersive spectroscopy). Luminescence properties were investigated by photoluminescence measurements.
