  • A hydrophobic surface has been fabricated on aluminum by two-step surface treatment processes consisting of structure modification and surface coating. Nature inspired micro nano scale structures were artificially created on the aluminum surface by a blasting and Ar ion beam etching. And a hydrophobic thin film was coated by a trimethylsilane ($(CH_3)_3SiH$) plasma deposition to minimize the surface energy of the micro nano structure surface. The contact angle of micro nano structured aluminum surface with the trimethylsilane coating was $123^{\circ}$ (surface energy: 9.05 $mJ/m^2$), but the contact angle of only trimethylsilane coated sample without the micro nano surface structure was $92^{\circ}$ (surface energy: 99.15 $mJ/m^2$). In the hydrophobic treatment of aluminum surface, a trimethylsilane coated sample having the micro nano structure was more effective than only trimethylsilane coated sample without the micro nano structure.

  • In this study, in order to improve corrosion resistance and wear resistance of aluminum, surface treatment was made by anodizing with oxalic acid solution and sealing with nano-diamond powder. Average size of nano-diamond powder was 30nm. Anodizing with oxalic acid made many pores in the aluminum oxide layer. Pore size and oxide thickness were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Pore size increased as temperature increased and voltage increased. It was possible to make oxide layer with pore diameter more than 50 nm. Oxide thickness increased as temperature and voltage and treatment time increased. Oxide layer with above $10{\mu}m$ thickness was made. Aluminum oxide layer with many pores was sealed by water with nano-diamond powder. Surface morphology was investigated by SEM. After sealing treatment with nano-diamond powder, corrosion resistance, wear resistance and hardness increased.

  • The effects of severe plastic deformation and heat treatment on the mechanical properties of Al 5052 and 6005 alloys were investigated using the metallurgical technique and nano-indentation technique in nano-surface region. Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was used to apply severe plastic deformation to the aluminum alloys in order to obtain fine grain sized materials. The elastic modulus was measured and interpreted in relation to the metallurgical observation. The elastic modulus increased after ECAP process due to evolution of the fine grains. However, the elastic modulus decreased after heat treatment due to generation of coarsened precipitates on the grain boundaries.

  • A treatment for improving the characteristics of a surface is very important in increasing the life of machine parts. Many studies have been carried out on the surface characteristics after such treatments. For enhanced eco-technology, an alternative to a conventional chemical surface treatment process is essential. Ultrasonic nano-crystal surface modification (UNSM) technology is a physical environmentally friendly surface treatment method. This technology was developed in domestic and currently being used. As the mechanism of UNSM technology, a ball tip attached to an ultrasonic vibration device strikes the metal surface at nearly 20,000 times per second. The resulting modified surface layer improves the surface characteristics. This paper describes a self-developed fast tool servo system applied to the UNSM process as a vibration module within a high-frequency bandwidth. After describing the surface modification process based on the material and process changes, the surface characteristics are compared.

  • Titanium (Ti) has been widely used for dental implant due to great biocompatibility and bonding ability against natural alveolar bone. A lot of titanium surface modification has been introduced in dentistry and, among them, methods to introduce micro/nano-roughened surface were considered as clinically approved strategy for accelerating osseointegration of Ti dental implant. To have synergetic effect with topography oriented favors in cell attachment, chair-side surface treatment with reproducibility of micro/nano-topography is introduced as next strategy to further enhance cellular functionalities. Extensive research has been investigated to study the potential of micro/nano-topography preserved chair-side surface treatment for Ti dental implant. This review will discuss ultraviolet, low level of laser therapy and non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma on Ti dental implant with micro/nano-topography as next generation of surface treatment due to its abilities to induce super-hydrophilicity or biofunctionality without change of topographical cues.

  • The microstructure and micro-hardness of high velocity oxygen fuel-sprayed (HVOF) WC-CoCr coatings are comparatively studied for both before and after laser heat-treatment (LT) of the coatings. The results indicate that compared to HVOF WC-CoCro coating, the laser treatment has eliminated the pores almost entirely providing a more homogeneous and densified microstructure. And the compact interface of the coating with substrate is achieved by laser treatment. The thickness of the coating has decreased from 300 ${\mu}m$ to 225 ${\mu}m$ As a result, the average porosity is five times higher in HVOF coating than in the coating by laser treatment. The laser treatment has produced a considerable increment in the hardness of the coating near surface whose average value increases from Hv0.2=1262.4 in the HVOF-sprayed coating to Hv0.2=1818.7 in the coatings treated with laser.

  • Fast tool servo (FTS) is an enabling technology to fabricate various shapes of functional surface geometries in a precise and controllable manner. FTS can be also employed as a straightforward and efficient surface treatment way of making such products more durable. In this work, process characteristics using high-precision FTS-based surface texturing were qualitatively and quantitatively investigated to provide a class of surface design rule. The morphologies of surfaces processed with different conditions were first examined by observing the resultant 2D/3D surface profiles. In addition, the effects of the surface treatment using FTS on hardness and wear properties were characterized and compared to those without treatment.

  • A high temperature and a low temperature plasma process technologies were developed and demonstrated for synthesis, hybrid formation, surface treatment and CVD engineering of nano powder. RF thermal plasma is used for synthesis of spherical nano particles in a diameter ranged from 10 nm to 100 nm. A variety of nano particules such as Si, Ni, has been synthesized. The diameter of the nano-particles can be controlled by RF plasma power, pressure, gas flow rate and raw material feed rate. A modified RF thermal plasma also produces nano hybrid materials with graphene. Hemispherical nano-materials such as Ag, Ni, Si, SiO2, Al2O3, size ranged from 30 to 100 nm, has been grown on graphene nanoplatelet surface. The coverage ranged from 0.1 to 0.7 has been achieved uniformly over the graphene surface. Low temperature AC plasma is developed for surface modification of nano-powder. In order to have a three dimensional and lengthy plasma treatment, a spiral type of reactor has been developed. A similar plasma reactor has been modfied for nano plasma CVD process. The reactor can be heated with halogen lamp.

  • Low temperature plasma treatment with different gases and rf powers were performed to improve the adhesion strength between polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) and electroless deposited copper. According to the research, $H_2$ plasma having hydrogen radical was more effective in surface polarity modification than $O_2$ plasma due to the defluorination reaction. However, surface roughness of PTFE was more increased with $O_2$ than $H_2$ plasma. PTFE treated with $120W-O_2$ plasma and $250w-H_2$ plasma, consecutively showed rougher surface than single step $250w-H_2$ plasma treated one and more hydrophilic than single step $120W-O_2$ plasma treated one. And it showed 5B tape test grade, which is better adhesion property than 1B or 3B obtained by single step plasma treatment. In addition, adhesion strength between PTFE and Cu deposit is also deeply affected by residual water on its interface.

  • Silicon nanowire devices fabricated by bottom-up methods are attracted due to their electrical, mechanical, and optical properties. Especially, to functionalize the surface of silicon nanowires by molecules has received interests. The changes in the characteristics of the molecules is delivered directly to the surface of the silicon nanowires so that the silicon nanowire can be utilized as an efficient read-out device by using the electronic state change of molecules. The surface treatment of the silicon nanowire with light-sensitive molecules can change its optical characteristics greatly. In this paper, we present the optical response of a SiNW field-effect-transistor (FET) conjugated with porphyrin molecules. We fabricated a SiNW FET and performed porphyrin conjugation on its surface. The characteristic and the optical response of the device shows a large difference after conjugation while there is not much change of the surface in the SEM observation. It attributed to the existence of few layer porphyrin molecules on the SiNW surface and efficient variation of the surface potential of the SiNW due to light irradiation.
