  • Due to the rapid development of AI, autonomous vessels will be realized in the near future. However, the curriculum of nautical science in maritime university is not prepared for this trend. In addition, after the expiration of the mandatory boarding period, a number of junior merchant marine officers are leaving offshore jobs to find onshore jobs. This is a comparative analysis of curriculum of nautical science in maritime universities. Since most of seafaring countries ratified STCW 2010, nearly all themaritime universities train their cadets by followings the procedures required by STCW. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the curriculum of these marine universities in oder to confirm the appropriateness of our curriculum of nautical science. This will ultimately be used as a reference for the development of an ideal curriculum to prepare for rapid technological development and to prepare for a job on the ground.

  • Ships if 500 gross tonnage and upwards constructed on or after 1 July 2002 shall have an automatic tracking aids according to SOLAS V /19 but existing ships less than 10,000 gross tonnage constructed before 1 July 2002 have potential collision risks due to the lack of automatic plotting devices like as an ATA This paper aims to provide a homemade ATA by developing the tracking algorithm for ATA and to prevent collision incidents by distributing ATA system to coasters.

  • This paper describes dynamics analysis of a small training boat and a new type of ship's autopilot not only to keep her course but also to reduce her roll motion. Firstly, statistical analysis through multi-variate auto regressive model is carried out using the real data collected from the sea trial on an actual small training boat Sazanami after the navigational system of the boat was upgraded. It is shown that the roll motion is strongly influenced by the rudder motion and it is suggested that there is a possibility of reducing the roll motion by controlling the rudder order properly. Based on this observation, a new type of ship's autopilot that takes the roll motion into account is designed using the muti-variate modern control theory. Lastly, digital simulations by white noise are carried out in order to evaluate the proposed system and a typical result is demonstrated. As results of simulations, the proposed autopilot had good performance compared with the original data.

  • The objective of the research was to study the determinants affecting the decision to study nautical science program within a Thai maritime institute in preparation for working post-graduation as a ship officer on a merchant ship. The samples are classified by institute, academic year, cumulative score level, domicile, and parent's monthly income. The total sample of study was 386 Thai merchant marine students. The data collection method was a one to five rating scale questionnaire. The statistical methods applied in analyzing the data were percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, one way analysis of variance and a Sheffe's test. The study shows seven factors that influenced the decision in descending order; expectations, tuition and scholarships, selection system, quality of the institute, background and private capability, generality of the institute and external influences on the decision. The decision to select an institute was classified by institute and revealed that different institutes had distinct determinants that led to the decision. The students were from The Merchant Marine Training Center and from The International Maritime College, Kasetsart University were differences. There were no dissimilarity between academic year, cumulative score level, domicile, and parent's monthly income.

  • Integrated Ship-Shore Information System makes use of advanced technology of marine mobile communication and extends the computer network of shipping company to ship. This system conveniently accomplishes the information exchange between company and ship, guarantees navigation safety and improves commercial performance. The framework of integrated ship-shore information system and the analysis of its function are provided in this paper. Meanwhile, the idea based on the specification of J2EE to build this system is put forward and the relevant technology is demonstrated.

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the behavior and distribution characteristics of fishes near an artificial reef close to the waters of Uljin marine ranch. A 200-kHz, dual-beam frequency transducer was attached to the side of a ship for acoustic measurements. The fish formed small groups in the bottom layer near the artificial reef around the afternoon-sunset period; at night, the fish did not form groups and remained individually scattered. During dawn-sunrise and morning, the fish formed groups again and were found near the upper and middle layers of the artificial reef. High density of fish occurred near the middle of the nautical zone during morning, afternoon-sunset, and dawn-sunrise, periods; at nighttime, the distribution was uniform across the entire zone. Moreover, the mean Nautical Area Scattering Coefficients (NASC, m2/nmi2) value was highest during dawn-sunrise at 400.2 m2/nmi2, similar during night and morning (100.5 m2/nmi2), and lowest during afternoon-sunset (20.1 m2/nmi2). The present study is expected to provide the background for understanding the behavioral characteristics of fish living near artificial reefs and estimating the density and biomass of fish.

  • Purposes: The purpose of this study is to develop and test a possible model that investigates the relationships between green investment, CSR disclosure, social collaboration initiatives, and firm distribution performance to deal with environmental change because it's become the major stakeholder since it affects increasingly global company performance index. Research methodology: In this study a quantitative method was adopted. The 220 respondents were owners and managers of manufacturing enterprises from Indonesia. The structural equation model (SEM) was used to test the hypotheses, and the Partial Least Square (SmartPLS) was used as the data analysis tool. Findings: The study's finding shows that green investment has a significant effect on CSR disclosure, and CSR disclosure has a positive relationship with social collaborative initiatives and the firm's distribution performance. Similarly, social collaborative initiatives also significantly impact a firm's distribution performance. Limitations: This study uses variables that are still abstract and have not been able to regress the dimensions contained there into conclusion variables for each antecedent variable. In addition, this study only used a sample with a small scope, namely Central Java Province, Indonesia. Contribution: The findings of this study contribute to the body of literature in the field of organizational management and support the agency and stakeholder theories. For the practical contribution, this study provides the way to build and implement green-based investment strategies as a competitive edge and improve firm's distribution performance.

  • Although more than 90% of the yearly freight has been made through shipping the positioning system for the ships and cargos to support effective transportation of the freights has not been established yet. The government has been working on developing such a positioning system in many perspectives. The main problem in building a such system is that individual shipping companies are running different types of system and databases. This would cause duplicated investment with wasting money and time and this becomes an obstacle to the easier information sharing. Therefore, this study has mainly demonstrated developing a manager's system in the positioning system for the ships and cargos based on client-server scheme using electronic nautical charts on which the international standards are already available. In addition, this study also proposed an independent system which can be used in the ports with different locations thereby preventing duplicated investments.
