  • This study was to evaluate on the removal efficiencies of total nitrogen and phosphorus in municipal wastewater at MUNR process using sludge carbon source for environmental micro-organism. The removal efficiencies of total suspended solid were 85.9~91%, total nitrogen were 38.6~87.2% and total phosphorus were 30.8~39.0%, respectively. It was shown that removal efficiency of nitrogen was effectively influenced by sludge carbon source treated with ultrasonication. The removal efficiency of total phosphorus was low because the sludge was not wasted during this treatment.

  • This study make a comparison between the phosphorus removal performance of FNR(Ferrous Nutrient Removal) process and A/O process by the laboratory experiments. For simultaneous removal of phosphorus, iron electrolysis was combined with oxic tank. Iron precipitation reactor on the electrochemical behaviors of phosphorus in the iron bed. The phosphorus removal in FNR process was more than A/O process. Iron salts produced by iron electrolysis might help to remove COD and nitrogen. And the demanded longer SRT is the more removes the removes COD, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Also, FNR process of sludge quantity more reduce than A/O process to input cohesive agents.

  • Wastewater was treated by two different treatment processes; activated sludge process and advanced wastewater treatment process (KNR process) using lab-scale experiment. Two treated wastewater showed good treatment efficiency of organic matter removal, up to 90% removal. Nitrogen and phosphorus were not effectively removed though activated sludge process, while KNR process showed good removal efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus; 56% nitrogen removal and 95% phosphorus removal. KNR process showed better removal efficiency of organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus compared to activated sludge process. Organic matter characterization was tracked though measurement of UV scan, SUVA, and XAD fractionation. Treated wastewater showed higher SUVA value than wastewater influent, indicting less aromatic characteristic of organic matter. XAD fractionation showed hydrophilic fraction decreased though wastewater treatment, suggesting microbes preferentially digest hydrophilic and aliphatic molecules rather than hydrophobic and aromatic molecules of organic matter.

  • A laboratory experiment was performed to investigate phosphorus and nitrogen removal from synthetic wastewater by intermittently activated sludge process packed with aluminium plate. Three continuous experimental systems, I. e. an intermittently activated sludge process(Run A), an intermittently activated sludge process with an aluminium plate packed into the reactor(Run B), and a reactor post stage(Run C) were compared. In the batch experiments, the phosphorus removal time in the reactor packed with copper and aluminium plate simultaneously was faster than that of the reactor packed with only an aluminium plates. However, the reactor packed with only an aluminium plate could be used for phosphorus removal. Move phosphorus was removed with an increase of surface area of aluminium plate and electrolysis(NaCl) concentration. The efficiency of COD and nitrogen removal was not affected in Run B. However, the phosphrus removal efficiency decreased because of reaction products and activated sludge which gradually covered gradually the surface of the aluminium plate. The efficiency of phosphorus removal in Run C was 86.3% at the HRT of 3.2 hours. Especially, the efficiency of phosphorus removal in Run C was higher than that in Run B.

  • To reduce extensive energy costs of the internal recycling for the purpose of denitrification in the advanced wastewater treatment, a post-treatment process using an electro-coagulation to treat nitrate in the secondary effluents is evaluated in this study. Removals of phosphorus and organics in the secondary effluents by the electro-coagulation were also evaluated to propose an alternative advanced wastewatert treatment process. A series of experiments of the electro-coagulation were carried out with the following 4 different samples: synthetic solution containing nitrate only, synthetic solution containing nitrate as well as phosphorus, secondary effluents from activated sludge cultivated in laboratory, and secondary effluents from real wastewater treatment plants. Removals of nitrate and phosphorus in the synthetic solution were 30 and 97 % respectively, which verified the feasibility of the process. Removals of nitrate, phosphorus and COD in the secondary effluents from the cultivated sludge in laboratory were 49, 90 and 19 % respectively. Removal efficiency of the total nitrogen, nitrrate, phosphorus and COD in the secondary effluent from real wastewater treatment plant were 50, 61, 98 and 80 % respectively. The removal of the total nitrogen was less than the nitrate as expected, which is due to the formation of ammonia nitrogen in the cathode. But the proposed scheme could be an energy saving and alternative process for the advanced wastewater treatment if further studies for the process optimization are carried out.

  • Most of sewage treatment plants in Korea is operated for the removal of organic material. Because of low C/N ratio of domestic wastewater it is very difficult to remove nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater. Therefore C/N ratio is key factor for the removed of nitrogen and phosphorus. PSB(photosynthetic bacteria) can remove the nutrient materials, so this study is focused on PSB characterization of nutrient removal. PSB is possible to remove nitrogen, phosphorus in anaerobic and aerobic condition. This study try to find out condition of the PSB in SBR reactor, Batch reactor. It consists of three Mode. Mode 1, 2 is to apply activated sludge process and Mode 3 is that seeded PSB in the activated sludge process. As a result of SBR process, Mode 1, 2 which was activated sludge Process showed $79\~90\%,\;66\~90\%$ of SCODcr, $94.67\~95.89\%,\;95.76\~98.56\%$ of TKN, and Mode 3 has $84\~92\%$ of SCODcr, $95.39\~99.52\%$ of TKN removal efficiency, respectively. When comparison with Mode 1, 2 and 3, most of nitrogen and phosphorus is removed at the anaerobic condition in Mode 3. but Mode 1, 2 has just revealed activated sludge process characterization. It would because of characterization of PSB.

  • In this study, nutrients treatment by sequencing batch reactors(SBR) was performed. Nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies were evaluated by changing SRT and mixing/aeration ratio. Not only nitrogen but also phosphorus removal patterns were investigated through track studies on 1 cycle. As SRT was fixed and mixing/aeration ratio was changed, maximum nitrogen removal efficiency was 87.6% at mixing/aeration ratio 0.67. Phosphorus removal efficiencies were more than 85.5% except no mixing condition. As mixing/aeration ratio was fixed and SRT was changed, nitrogen removal efficiencies were 70.5~79.8%, which represented slight changes, while phosphorus removal efficiencies were 49.0~97.3%, which represented sharply decreasing tendency at less than 20 day. Both phosphorus release rate k and maximum phosphorus release rate $P_{max}/M$ were are decreased as SRT was decreased, but they were not affected by mixing/aeration ratio. It was found that there is a linear relationship between ortho-phosphate uptake and maximum ortho-phosphate release.

  • This research aims to develop biofilm process for the nutrient removal of piggery wastewater. The developed process is the four stage anoxic-oxic biofilm process with recirculation of the final effluent. In summery, the results are as follows: 1. Nitrification in the piggery wastewater built up nitrite because of the high strength ammonia nitrogen. The nitrification of nitrobacter by free ammonia was inhibited in the total ammonia nitrogen loading rate with more than 0.2 kgNH$_{3}$-N/m$^{3}$·d. 2. The maximal total ammonia nitrogen removal rate was obtained at 22$\circ $C and without being affected by the loading rate. But total oxidized nitrogen production rate was largely affected by loading rate. 3. Autooxidation by the organic limit was a cause of the phosphorus release in the aerobic biofilm process. But the phosphorus removal rate was 90 percent less than the influent phosphorus volumetric loading rate of above 0.1 kgP/m$^{3}$·d. Therefore, the phosphorus removal necessarily accompanied the influent loading rate. 4. On the anoxic-oxic BF process, the total average COD mass balance was approximately 67.6 percent. Under this condition, the COD mass removal showed that the cell synthesis and metabolism in aerobic reactor was 42.8 percent and that the denitrification in anoxic reactor was 10.7 percent, respectively.

  • Space separation method that use independent reactor for nitrification and other reactor for denitrification has been commonly used for biological nitrogen removal process like $A^2O$ process. However, this method needs large space and complicate pipelines and time separation method such as SBR process have a difficulty in continuous treatment. Thus biological nitrogen removal process which is capable of continuous treatment, easy opeation and space saving is urgently required. In this research, submerged moving media was used for a biofilm process and suspended sludge was used for biological nitrogen removal at the same time. In particular DO environment by controlling air flow rate was investigated for simultaneous nitrification/denitrification. Total nitrogen removal in aeration rate more than $67L/min{\cdot}m^3$ showed 51~53% and rose to 65%, 70% and 78% in $50L/min{\cdot}m^3$, $58L/min{\cdot}m^3$ and $25L/min{\cdot}m^3$ respectively. Total phosphorus removal was very low about 10~20% more than $67L/min{\cdot}m^3$ aeration rates. But total phosphorus removal roses when reduces aeration rate by $58L/min{\cdot}m^3$ low and it showed total phosphorus removal of 72% in aeration rate $25L/min{\cdot}m^3$.
