  • This paper presents a time series prediction method using a fuzzy rule-based system. Extracting fuzzy rules by performing a simple one-pass operation on the training data is quite attractive because it is easy to understand, verify, and extend. The simplest method is probably to relate an estimate, x(n+k), with past data such as x(n), x(n-1), ..x(n-m), where k and m are prefixed positive integers. The relation is represented by fuzzy if-then rules, where the past data stand for premise part and the predicted value for consequence part. However, a serious problem of the method is that it cannot handle nonstationary data whose long-term mean is varying. To cope with this, a new training method is proposed, which utilizes the difference of consecutive data in a time series. In this paper, typical previous works relating time series prediction are briefly surveyed and a new method is proposed to overcome the difficulty of prediction nonstationary data. Finally, computer simulations are illustrated to show the improved results for various time series.

  • In this paper we analytically study model misspecification that arises in regression analysis of nonstationary seasonal time series. We assume the underlying data generating process is a seasonally or a regularly and seasonally integrated process. We first study consequences of totally misspecified cases where seasonal indicator variables, a linear time trend, or another statistically independent seasonally integrated process are used as predictor variables in order to model the nonstationary seasonal behavior of the dependent variable. Then we study consequences of partially misspecified cases where the dependent variable and a predictor variable are cointegrated at some, but not all of the frequencies corresponding to the nonstationary roots.

  • A need exists for the accurate identification of time series models having time varying parameters, as is important in the case of real time identification of nonstationary EMG signal. Thls paper describes real time identification and muscle fatigue monitoring method of nonstationary EMG signal. The method is composed of the efficient identifier which estimates the autoregressive parameters of nonstationary EMG signal model, and its real time implementation by using T805 parallel processing computer. The method is verified through experiment with real EMG signals which are obtained from surface electrode. As a result, the proposed method provides a new approach for real time Implementation of muscle fatigue monitoring and the execution time is 0.894ms/sample for 1024Hz EMG signal.

  • This paper tries to estimate Korea's import demand function for fisheries using cointegration analysis. The estimation function consists of one dependent variable-import quantity of fisheries(FTIW) and two independent variables-relative price(RP) between importable and domestic products and real income(GDP). As it has been empirically found out that almost all of time series of macro-variables such as GDP, price index are nonstationary, existing studies which ignore this fact need to be reexamined. Conventional econometric method can not analyze nonstationary time series in level. To perform the analysis, time series should be differenciated until stationarity is guaranteed. Unfortunately, the difference method removes the long run element of data, and so leads to difficulties of interpretation. But according to new developed econometric theory, cointegration approach could solve these problems. Therefore this paper proceeds the estimation on the basis of cointegration analysis, because the quartly variables from 1988 to 1997 used in the model is found out to be nonstationary. The estimation results show that all of the variables are statistically significant. Therefore Korea's import demand for fisheries has been strongly affected by the variation of real income and the relative price.

  • In this paper, we implement an empirical study to test whether the time series of daily returns in stock and Won/USD exchange markets is strictly stationary or explosive. The results indicate that only a few series show nonstationary volatility when dramatic events erupted; in addition, this nonstationary behavior occurs more often in the Won/USD exchange market than in the stock market.

  • Recent work by Shin and Sarkar (1996) examines model misspecification problems for nonstationary time series. Shin and Sarkar introduce a general regression model with integrated errors and one system of integrated regressors and discuss the limiting distributions of the OLS estimators and the usual OLS statistics such as $\hat{\sigma^2}$t, DW and $R^2$. We analyze three different model misspecification problems through a Monte Carlo study and investigate each model misspecification problem. Our Monte Carlo experiments show that DW and $R^2$ can be in general used as diagnostic tools to detect spurious regression, misspecification of nonstationary autoregressive and polynomial regression models.

  • Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is applied to analyze time series characterized with nonlinearity and nonstationarity. This decomposition could be utilized to construct finite and small number intrinsic mode functions (IMF) that describe complicated time series, while admitting the Hilbert transformation properties. EMD has the capability of being adaptive, capture local characteristics, and applicable to nonlinear and nonstationary processes. Unlike discrete wavelet transform (DWT), IMF eliminates spurious harmonics and retains meaningful instantaneous frequencies. Examples based on data representing natural phenomena are given to demonstrate highlight the power of this method in contrast and comparison of other ones. A presentation of the energy-frequency-time distribution of these signals found to be more informative and intuitive when based on Hilbert transformation.

  • In this paper, we develop the two-step procedure that detects and estimates the position of structural changes for multivariate nonstationary time series, either on mean parameters or second-order structures. We first investigate the presence of mean structural change by monitoring data through the aggregated cumulative sum (CUSUM) type statistic, a sequential procedure identifying the likely position of the change point on its trend. If no mean change point is detected, the proposed method proceeds to scan the second-order structural change by modeling the multivariate nonstationary time series with a multivariate locally stationary Wavelet process, allowing the time-localized auto-correlation and cross-dependence. Under this framework, the estimated dynamic spectral matrices derived from the local wavelet periodogram capture the time-evolving scale-specific auto- and cross-dependence features of data. We then monitor the change point from the lower-dimensional approximated space of the spectral matrices over time by applying the dynamic principal component analysis. Different from existing methods requiring prior information on the type of changes between mean and covariance structures as an input for the implementation, the proposed algorithm provides the output indicating the type of change and the estimated location of its occurrence. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated in simulations and the analysis of two real finance datasets.

  • In this paper we study the behaviors of the generalized Durbin-Watson (DW) statistics when the nonstationary seasonal time series regression model is misspecified. It is observed that when the series is seasonally integrated the generalized DW statistic for the seasonal period order autocorrelation converges in probability to zero while teh generalized DW statistic for the first order autocorrelation has nondegenerate asymptotic distribution. When the series is regularly and seasonally integrated the generalized DW for the first order autocorrelation still converges in probability to zero.
