  • Frictional characteristics with the change of loading method and normal stiffness at dry sliding surfaces were experimentally and theoretically evaluated in this study. For the study, a ball-on-disk typed test rig was built and implemented, which allowed a proper selection of loading mechanism and normal stiffness of the test rig. Loading method were varied from dead weight to pneumatic cylinder and spring loading, and the normal stiffness was varied by a spring of different stiffness. Test results showed that frictional characteristics at various loading methods were different even though the operating variables were the same. Discrepancy in the frictional characteristics, such as coefficient of friction and fluctuation in the normal load, were explained by the change in dynamic parameters of the test rigs. Results also showed that coefficient of friction, which defines as a ratio of frictional force divided a normal load, could be differently evaluated in the calculation when fluctuation in the normal load was significant.

  • This study presents results from an experimental work for two normal prestressed concrete beams and three dual prestressed concrete beams. The dual prestressed concrete beams made with normal concrete in compression zone and high performance steel fiber reinforced concrete in partial depth of tension zone. Through cyclic loading test under low frequency, structural behavior and resistance to dynamic loading for dual prestressed concrete beams are investigated. Considerable increase of crack and yield load capacity of Dual prestressed concrete beam is shown compared with normal prestressed concrete beam. In addition, re-loading and un-loading rigidity of dual prestressed concrete beam under cyclic loading are increased comparing with normal prestressed concrete beam.

  • In this study, the deformation characteristics of atrtificially fractured joints of granite under normal and shear loading were investigated. To obtain the characteristics of joint deformation, compression and shear tests were performed in the laboratory on three different sizes of rock specimens. The rock used in the experimens was Iksan granite. Joints were produced artificially by fracturing using the apparatus for generating extension-joint. Joint normal deformability was studied by conducting cyclic loading tests on the joints. Joint closure varied non-linearly with normal stress through cyclic loadings. As normal stress increased, the joints gradually reached a state of maximum joint closure. The relation between normal stress and joint closure for mated and unmated joints was well described by the hyperbolic and exponential function, respectively. Joint shear deformability was studied by performing direct shear tests under normal stresses on the joints. it was shown that the behaviour in the prepeak range was non-linear and joint shear stiffness depended on the size of specimen and the normal stress.

  • In this paper, the effect of normal load on the failure mechanism of echelon joint has been studied using PFC2D. In the first step, calibration of PFC was undertaken with respect to the data obtained from experimental laboratory tests. Then, six different models consisting various echelon joint were prepared and tested under two low and high normal loads. Furthermore, validation of the simulated models were cross checked with the results of direct shear tests performed on non-persistent jointed physical models. The simulations demonstrated that failure patterns were mostly influenced by normal loading, while the shear strength was linked to failure mechanism. When ligament angle is less than $90^{\circ}$, the stable crack growth length is increased by increasing the normal loading. In this condition, fish eyes failure pattern occur in rock bridge. With higher ligament angles, the rock bridge was broken under high normal loading. Applying higher normal loading increases the number of fracture sets while dilation angle and mean orientations of fracture sets with respect to ligament direction will be decreased.

  • The purpose of this study was to analysis the pollutant loading of Chin yang Reservoir according to the variation of outflow. Regression equation of the pollutant loading and outflow was represented as $L=a\;Q^b$ in which L = pollutant loading(kg/day), a and b = regression coefficient, and Q = outflow($m^3/day$). Regression coefficients ($R^2$) of Sanchung, Sinan and Changchon site was in range of 0.8376 to 0.9818. Therefore the pollutant loading was good correlated with outflow. Changchon site had minimum b value because outflow of pollutant was little compared with rainfall. The SS was the highest b value 1.621~1.7834 among water quality parameters because the pollutant loading of SS was much affected by outflow. Also, the pollutant loadings per area could be calculated and compared in case of the dry season, normal season and flood season. The pollutant loading in the normal and flood season except the dry season were higher in order of Sanchung, Sinan and Changchon site. Pollutant loading per area were higher in order of Sinan, Sanchung and Changchon site. When it compared with pollutant loading per area calculated using pollutant unit loading, T-N was much different each other.

  • In this research traditional Buddhist dietary life style was studied as an alternative for both saving water and decreasing water pollution from household. A traditional dietary life style for the Buddhist monks, called Balwoo Gongyang, and its modernized one for citizens, called Dish Gongyang were examined with water use amount, wastewater quality and pollutant loading rate, and were compared with the kitchen wastewater from household. And several types of natural detergent were also examined to compare their effect on the wastewater quality and pollutant loading rate. This research was carried out using the wastewater from Balwoo and Dish Gongyang in J building located in Seoul. Wastewater generation from Balwoo Gongyang that was about $1.0{\ell}$/capita/day was very low compare to that from dish washing in normal household($32.6{\ell}$/capita/day). In case of Dish Gongyang, water generation was 1.8 times higher than that from Balwoo Gongyang, but it was just 1/19.2 of normal household. When the wastewater quality of Balwoo Gongyang was compared with the kitchen wastewater of normal household, SS was 1/16($15mg/{\ell}$), COD was 1/7($22.1mg/{\ell}$), BOD was 1/9($24.1mg/{\ell}$) and T-N was 1/16($1.7mg/{\ell}$). Pollutant loading rate from Balwoo Gongyang was very low, COD 18.0 mg/capita/day, SS 12.3 mg/capita/day and it was 1/290, 1/639 of that from dish washing wastewater from normal household, respectively. Pollutant loading rate from Dish Gongyang was also low 1/13(SS)~1/144(TN) compared to dish washing wastewater from normal household. As a natural detergent, used water from washing rice showed very low pollutant loading rate. It was concluded that Dish Gongyang that was a modernized and simplified dietary life style of Balwoo Gongyang, was very eco-friendly. Especially when it was combined with natural detergents using by-product from cooking process, its effect on the water pollution was very low.

  • This paper describes lab test results of artificial rock-like material samples having a plane joint. Cyclic shear tests were performed under different normal loads and different shear displacement amplitudes. For this purpose, multi-stage normal loading tests (30 kN, 60 kN, 90 kN, 180 kN, 360 kN and 480 kN) with cyclic excitation at frequency of 1.0 Hz and different shear displacement amplitudes (0.5 mm, 1.0 mm, 2.0 mm, 4.0 mm, 5.0 mm, and 8.0 mm) were conducted using the big shear box device GS-1000. Experimental results show, that shear forces increase with the increase of normal forces and quasi-static friction coefficient is larger than dynamic one. With the increase of normal loads, approaching the peak value of shear forces needs larger shear displacements. During each cycle the normal displacements increase and decrease (rotational behavior in every cycle). Peak angle of inclination increases with the increase of normal load. A phase shift between maximum shear displacement and maximum shear force is observed. The corresponding time shift decreases with increasing normal load and increases with increasing shear displacement amplitudes.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate differences of landing strategy between people with or without chronic ankle instability (CAI) during double-leg drop landing. Method: 34 male adults participated in this study (CAI = 16, Normal = 18). Participants performed double-leg drop landing task on a 30 cm height and 20 cm horizontal distance away from the force plate. Lower Extremities Kinetic and Kinematic data were obtained using 8 motion capture cameras and 2 force plates and loading rate was calculated. Independent samples t-test were used to identify differences between groups. Results: Compared with normal group, CAI group exhibits significantly less hip internal rotation angle (CAI = 1.52±8.12, Normal = 10.63±8.44, p = 0.003), greater knee valgus angle (CAI = -6.78±5.03, Normal = -12.38 ±6.78, p = 0.011), greater ankle eversion moment (CAI = 0.0001±0.02, Normal = -0.03±0.05, p = 0.043), greater loading Rate (CAI = 32.65±15.52, Normal = 18.43±10.87, p = 0.003) on their affected limb during maximum vertical Ground Reaction Force moment. Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that CAI group exhibits compensatory movement to avoid ankle inversion during double-leg drop landing compared with normal group. Further study about how changed kinetic and kinematic affect shock absorption ability and injury risk in participants with CAI is needed.

  • The purposes of the paper are to calculate stresses and strains of the disk with overcoating layer rotating quickly under normal loading and shear loading by contacting with head and to present material properties preventing the delamination between the disk and overcoating layer. The hard disk is modeled as two-layered disk composed with overcoating layer and the rest layers and the loading onto the disk is assumed axisymmetric. Solutions to equilibrium equations and compatibility equations are derived with the form of polynimial and Bessel function and coefficients satisfying boundary conditions are obtained differently for the case of body force, normal force and shear force. The risk of delamination are investigated for us to calculate the differences of strains at the interface between the disk and overcoating layer and the material properties preventing delamination are presented by calculating the differences of strains according to Young's modulus and density of disk.
