Nursing Informatics Competencies of Public Health Nurses in Chungcheongnam-do (충청남도 보건소 간호사의 간호정보역량 실태)

  • Purpose: The aim of the study was to identify nursing informatics competencies of nurses working for public health centers in Chungcheongnam-do. Methods: Data were collected from June 10 to July 25, 2012 using the Nursing Informatics Competencies Questionnaire (NICQ). Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, $x^2$-test, ANOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results: Nursing informatics competencies of the subjects showed a mean score of $3.3{\pm}1.0$ out of 5. As for scores of individual categories, the score for computer skills competencies was $3.3{\pm}1.0$, informatics knowledge competencies $3.4{\pm}0.9$, and informatics skills competencies $3.0{\pm}0.9$. Nursing informatics competencies were positively correlated with the subjects' ages (r=.65, p<.001), computer usage hours (r=.23, p = .015), levels of demand for informatics knowledge (r=.51, p<.001), and informatics skills education (r=.78, p<.001). Conclusion: Nursing informatics is required to be connected with job training or in-service education on account of its growing necessity for public health nurses. It is also essential to develop programs for strengthening informatics competencies reflecting sub-categories of educational needs.

  • The nursing informatics has been booming in Taiwan since 2003 when we started to use the end user computing strategy to promote it. We used Excel 2003, which was well known and used by our clinical nurses, as well as the embedded VBA to teach them how simple information applications could and should be built to meet their information management needs in order to support their professional responsibility. Many cost-effective projects were successfully done and the importance and potentials of nursing informatics started to be noticed. Our training strategy and materials are introduced in this paper.

A Development of Internet Based Educational Program for Nursing Informatics (인터넷을 활용한 간호정보학 교육 프로그램 개발)

  • This study was conducted to develop the internet based Nursing Informatics educational program. This program is consisted of 14 weeks (2 credit, 1 semester) course. Classes include, 'Understanding of Nursing Informatics'. 'Basic computing technologies', 'Basic web page building', 'Navigating Healthcare related Information', 'Nursing Informatics-Practice, Education, Research', 'Issues in Nursing Informatics'. After finishing the course, students' satisfaction about this program was very high and positive. The results suggest that this program is useful to the education of Nursing Informatics and can be used as an alternative teaching method which does restrict time and place in Nursing Education in a newly changing era.

Relationship of Nursing Informatics Competency and Self-leadership among Hospital Nurses (일 대학병원 간호사의 간호정보역량과 셀프 리더십의 상관성)

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to define nursing informatics competency and self-leadership perceived by hospital nurses and the relationship between those variables. Method: The subjects of this study were 215 nurses who had worked in one university hospital in P city. For this study the following study tools were used: the Staggers Nursing Computer Experience Questionnaire and self-leadership scale. Data was analyzed using mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe and Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: The mean score of each item in informatics skill domain and informatics knowledge domain $2.93{\pm}.49$ and $3.40{\pm}.50$. The average score of self-leadership was $3.39{\pm}.53$. 'Self-leadership' was positively related with 'nursing informatics competency'. Conclusion: This study proved that there were significant positive correlation between nursing informatics competency and self-leadership. These results suggested that it would be necessary to develop regular educational program which promotes the nurses' self-leadership as well as nursing informatics competency in schools. And practical education program for nurses must be planned continuously for informatics competency in hospitals.

A study on nursing informatics competence of clinical nurses: Applying focus group interview (일반간호사의 간호정보역량 이해 및 향상 전략: 포커스 그룹 인터뷰를 중심으로)

  • Purpose: This study is a content analysis to understand the nursing informatics competence of clinical nurses. Methods: Focus group interviews were used to collect data. Two focus group interviews were held with a total of nine clinical nurses. All interviews were recorded and transcribed. Content analysis was used to analyze data. Results: The five main categories of nursing informatics competence that emerged are 1) software program use, 2) use of nursing information, 3) use of information communication technology in nursing, 4) professional responsibilities and ethics, and 5) active attitudes and recognition. Next, there are three strategies to improve nursing informatics competence: 1) organizational approach, 2) opportunity of continuous education, 3) presentation of standards in nursing informatics competence. Conclusion: Further studies such as educational program development and evaluation tool development are necessary. Moreover, there is a need to enhance clinical nurses' nursing informatics competence by using the proposed strategies.

Role of Self-Leadership in the Relationship between Organizational Culture and Informatics Competency (간호조직문화와 간호정보역량 간의 관계에서 셀프 리더십의 역할)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the moderating and mediating effects of self-leadership in the relationship between organizational culture and nurses' informatics competency. Methods: Participants in this study were 297 nurses from the cities of Busan and Ulsan. The scales of organizational culture, self-leadership and informatics competency for nurses were used in this study. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, stepwise multiple regression were used for data analysis. Results: Nursing informatics competency of the participants was relatively low with a mean score 3.02. There were significant positive correlations between subcategories of perceived organizational culture, self-leadership and nursing informatics competency. Self-leadership was a moderator and a mediator between organizational culture and informatics competency. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, self-leadership promotion strategies to improve nursing informatics competency are needed.

Influence of Nursing Informatics Competencies and Problem-solving Ability on Nursing Performance Ability among Clinical Nurses (간호사의 간호정보역량, 문제해결능력 및 업무수행능력)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the nursing informatics competencies, problem-solving ability, and nursing performance ability of nurses, and to determine factors that affect their nursing performance ability. Methods: Data were collected from 210 clinical nurses employed by a general hospital having more than 500 beds in Seoul. The data were collected from June to October, 2014. The questionnaires included a nursing informatics questionnaire, the Korea problem solving process inventory, and a nurse performance appraisal tool. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Nursing performance ability had statistically significant correlation with nursing informatics competencies (r=.49, p<.001) and problem-solving ability (r=.66, p<.001). Factors influencing nursing performance ability were problem-solving ability, nursing informatics competencies, work experience, and educational status, accounting for 54% of the variance. Conclusion: Findings indicate that nursing informatics competencies and problem-solving ability have important influences on the nursing performance ability of clinical nurses. Thus, in order to provide an improvement in nursing performance ability, educational programs towards nurses' problem-solving ability and nursing informatics competencies should be provided.

Canonical Correlation between Organizational Culture and Informatics Competency (간호사가 인지하는 조직문화와 정보역량간의 정준상관관계)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the canonical correlation between organizational culture and nurses' informatics competency. Method: Participants in this study were 354 nurses from three hospitals and one university. The scales of organizational culture, informatics competency for nurses were used. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, canonical correlation were used for data analysis. Results: The dominant organizational culture was hierarch-oriented culture. Nursing informatics competency of the participants was relatively low with a mean score 3.04. Organizational culture was related to informatics competency with 2 significant canonical variables. The first variate showed the higher four subcategories of organizational culture showed the better nursing informatics. The second variate indicated that nurses felt higher innovation-related and lower hierarch-related culture showed higher medical informatics-related software usage and computer related information management, lower perception of informatics and information search using internet. Conclusion: Organization culture has a major of impact on the success of information system use. Therefore, the continuous strategy for higher innovation-related organizational culture such as management support should be needed.

The Influence of Nursing Informatics Competency on Job-Satisfaction and Nursing Performance (간호정보역량이 간호사의 직무만족 및 간호업무성과에 미치는 영향)

  • This study carries out a declarative survey research designed to ascertain nursing informatics competency, job satisfaction and nursing performance of nurses and investigates the influence of nursing informatics competency on job satisfaction and nursing performance. The research was performed with 274 nurses who have been working for at least 6 month in P national university hospital in Y city, during the 30-day period of 15th October 2014 to 15th November 2014, using a questionnaire composed of questions on nursing informatics competency(30 items), job satisfaction(20 items), and nursing performance(23 items). The collected data underwent descriptive statics, t-test, ANOVA and Scheffe'test. Pearson correlation coefficients were also obtained and a stepwise multiple regression was performed by the SPSS WIN 19.0 program. The regression coefficient is positive between nursing informatics competency and conducting an information search(${\beta}=.20$, p=.012), in the case of job satisfaction,; It was also positive between nursing competency and computer related information management(${\beta}=.19$, p=.011), perception of informatics(${\beta}=.17$, p=.010), conducting an and information search(${\beta}=.17$, p=.004) in the case of nursing performance. We conclude that, in the nursing process, if nurse do their best to accomplish their tasks and strive to increase the productivity and efficiency of nursing tasks, they will achieve the organization's goals and balanced development.

The Development and Effect Analysis of an Internet Based Nursing Program: Application to Nursing Informatics (인터넷을 이용한 간호학 교육 프로그램 개발 및 효과분석 -간호정보학을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate an internet based program for nursing informatics. The course subject, Nursing Informatics, was made by a computerized instructional module using the internet. The program was developed after taking into consideration the level of competence and knowledge in the subjects. It was based on 10 steps of the CAI module developed by Alessi and Trollip. The subjects consisted of 76 junior nursing students taking a Nursing Informatics course. Two sets of questionnaires were used for this study. First, a questionnaire was administered to 76 students to collect general information on their experience while using computers and the internet. Secondly, another questionnaire was administrated to 76 students after they took the course. They were asked to evaluate the program in terms of easiness of use, precision of contents, freshness of contents, motivation in learning, effectiveness of learning, enhancement of communication, precision of screen, and interest in the contents. IDs and passwords were given to the students. The students were asked to write their IDs and passwords when they connected to Nursing Informatics (http://hallym.ac.kr/~yhyom/ inform.html). They were led the menu page which was categorized into 8 icons (i. e., syllabus, lecture notes, quick test, Q & A board, assignment, on-line test, related web sites and mailing lists) after confirming their IDs and passwords. The students' responses were very positive. This program was a very useful in increasing the effectiveness of learning and motivation in the students. Suggest to be use for other nursing courses.
