  • Several methods were developed for on-line measuring oil consumption in gasoline engine using an oil consumption meter. The oil consumption meter indicates the oil quantity by real-time-measuring the oil level in the sump. In order to measure the oil consumption, the oil consumption meter proposed in this paper requires shorter time, less additional procedures, and shows better results than the traditional drain method. Under steady-state engine-operating conditions, the results obtained through the regression or the difference method show an good agreement with those through the drain method. Under transient engine-operating conditions, on the other hand, good results can be obtained through the reference method.

  • According to the MARPOL 73/78 of Convention, all ships should have oil filtering equipment and 15 ppm bilge which satisfy Requirements of MARPOL 73/78. This study is concerned with designing and manufacturing a prototype Oil content Meter(OCM) used in machinery area of ship. The prototype OCM is composed of two parts which are oil content sensing module and data processing unit. The oil content sensing module consists of infra-red light source, photo-diode light receivers, and a glass tube for bilge water sample. The data processing unit has a micro-processor as hard core and peripheral devices. The experimental results of prototype OCM and analysis of collected data reveal linear property between transmitted light and scattered light as long as the bilge water has low level content of oil. And this linear property leads to a oil content detecting method which is programmed and loaded into the data processing unit. The performance of the prototype OCM is compared with that of the commercial OCM in the market.

  • For the measurement of liquid level in ship's cargo tank, ballast tank, fuel oil tank and fresh water tank, several types of gauge meter are used such as tubular type, magnetic float type, reflex type transparent type and welding pad type. Among them, magnetic float type gauge meter is environmental friendly device because it is free of power source and maintenance. The main obstacle of the device is relatively large error bound. In this paper, finite element method is used to design and analysis of the magnetic float type gauge meter. The operation of reed switch according to the magnetic field has been successfully described and agreed well with experimental measurement. The optimum geometry with combination of permanent magnet and reed switches are designed to achieve 98 % accuracy of fluid level.

  • The relationship between acoustic property and coating hardness of musical instruments was investigated using a sound level meter and a pendulum hardness tester. Urethane topcoat, oil stain, natural oil varnish, and UV-curable epoxy acrylate coatings were applied on four different substrates: Paulownia coreana, Pinus koraiensis, Castanea crenata var. dulcis and Pinus densiflora. The influence of the coating type on the acoustic properties was stronger than that of the substrate. In the case of an oil stain formed with tacky coating layer, the sound pressure level (SPL) and surface hardness decreased with increasing of coating thickness. In the other coatings, SPL decreased and hardness increased as the coating layer thickened. However, SPL began to increase again at coating thickness above $100{\mu}m$.

  • New S-shaped aeroelastic mesoflaps are utilized to control normal shock/boundary-layer interactions. New generation of the mesoflaps is designed f3r a better rigidness and a good flow uniformity across the ulteractions. ,Major advantages of the mesoflap system can be a better total pressure recovery downstream of the interactions due to the lambda shock structure over the flap system, and a rehabilitation of the thickened boundary layer due to bleeding through a cavity underneath the flap system. Skin friction has been measured downstream of the interactions, using the laser interferometer skin friction (LISF) meter, which optically detects the rate of thinning of an oil film applied to the test surface. Various flap-thicknesses of the S-shaped mesoflap arrays are tested, and the results are compared to the solid-wall reference case. Overall, not much difference in the level of skin friction is noticed for the S-shaped flap arrays of various thicknesses, and its level is lower than the skin friction downstream of the solid-wall interaction

  • This study aimed at simulating several responses to stresses caused by the ground water level variations around the K-1 oil stockpile. For this simulation, we considered the characteristic hydrogeological condition including the special occurrence of long and thick acidic dyke, which is regarded as the main geological structure dominating the ground water flow system at this study area. We activated twenty-four imaginary wells which are located in northern and southern area around central K-1 site. Each neighboring distance is altogether 300 m and whole distance between K-1 site and remote wells is 1,200 m. Through the modeling, we operated the long-term and continuous pumping tests and finally categorized five zones based on maximum pumping rates for the imaginary wells; zone I within 300 meter distance from K-1 site with a pumping rate of 50 $m^3/day$; zone II between 300 to 600 meter distance from K-1 site with a pumping rate of 75 $m^3/day$; zone III between 600 to 900 meter distance from K-1 site with 150 $m^3/day$; zone IV between 900 to 1,200 meter distance from K-1 site with 300 $m^3/day$; and zone V of acidic dyke area. At zone V, especially because of their possibility of high transmissivity for groundwater flow, it is necessary to control and restrict groundwater discharge.

  • Through the modeting study on the groundwater now system around the underground stockpile site of crude oil near Seoul, we carried out the research on the influence of the groundwater yield near the site, the effect of the water curtain construction in order to reduce the influence of water yield, and the realized case study by measuring the water level change after the construction of the water curtain. For the simu1ation of the water yield and the water curtain, the nwnerical analysis code, MODFLOW has been utilized. Groundwater levels of the observation wells which were established to observe the hydraulic head around underground oil storage cavern of the study area have been changed in the range of from EL.+30 to +60 meter, while the simulation study revealed that groundwater levels changed in the range of from EL.+20 to +5Om. The hydrogeological condition of the underground oil storage cavern becomes stable by injection water to maintain the groundwater level around the cavern. The result shows the proper input of the hydrogeological factors helps the management to be effective for the oil stockpile site.

  • This research is to determine the level of environmental pollution at a blasting construction area which is the origin of noise, vibration, and suspended particle, and to compare the results with other domestic and international standard data. This experiment is also to find out the effects resulting from blasting construction and to propose a plan that can decrease environmental pollution. The blasting construction area is a factory site which is about one and half million square meter and sewage disposal plant is about ninety thousand square meter. Both were selected as the areas for the tests to be conducted in determination test. The test to determine the level of noise, vibration, and total suspended particle was conducted thirty times around the blasting construction area by comparing measurement results and numerical analysis. However, as the test was not conducted in the laboratory but in the actual blasting construction area, it was not possible to do the test with the same exact conditions each true. Therefore, the test was not ideal as conditions could change from test to test. For the most part, the level of noise was below the standard level of 70dB. Every vibration test was under the standard limitation. For example, a house, 200m away was tested for noise and vibration and the level was found to be under the 0.2 cm/sec which is the standard for specialty designed cultural sites., i.e very low level. Also a buried oil pipeline that was 30m away also marked under 2.0cm/sec which is the norm for an industrial area. However, if there were an oil pipeline under the house, the amount of charging gunpowder per hole should be decreased compared to the amount used in the test. The test result for suspended particles under the standard limitation which is 24hour average 300$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ at a distance from blasting wavelength, but at detonator, total suspended particle from the blast origin exceeded the standard limitation. If explosion occurs when it detonates in the hole, most of the energy would be absorbed in the crushing of rocks, but some remaining energy would make noises and vibration inevitable. So the important thing is how to minimize the environmental pollution from the blasting. There should be regulations in order that the standard limitation is not exceeded, and to decrease the environmental pollution from the blasting.
