In the design of optical system, important variables of optical system (including indices, shapes, spaces, stops. etc.) must manipulate in order to balance out offensive aberration. In this paper, it carried out a basic study on the design of micro optical system usable for the acquaintance of visual information in the particular conditions such as capsule type endoscopes. In this study, specification for design of optical system selected voluntarily and the basic design of optical system carried out by using the ray tracing method on the assumption that ideal lenses without aberrations. In the designed optical system, the optimization including aberration correction and the performance evaluation of optical system carried out by using the CODE-V. The final designed optical system consists of seven sheets of lenses. Also the results of performance evaluation. the micro optical system combined with aspherical lenses was confirmed to have improved optical performance as compared with the micro optical system consisted of spherical lenses.
A micro zoom system without moving elements by use of two liquid lenses is designed and optimized in this paper. The zoom equations of the system composed of two liquid lenses are deduced. The structure parameters including radius and thickness of a conical double-liquid electrowetting based lens are analyzed and calculated. Because the liquid thickness varies non-linearly with the radius of the interface, it's very difficult to optimize a real liquid lens using commercial optical design software directly. Through the Application Programming Interface (API) of the optical design software CODE V, a zoom system with two real electrowetting based liquid lenses is modeled and optimized. A two-liquid-lens zoom system without moving elements, with a zoom factor of 1.8 and a compact structure of 10 mm is designed for illustration. This can be useful for the camera design of mobile phones, tablets and so on. And this paper presents a convenient way of designing and optimizing a zoom system including liquid lenses by commercial optical design software.
A diffraction limited optical system for head mounted displays (HMDs) was designed. This optical system consists of four modules, including 1:5 mm and 5:30 mm beam expanders, polarization grating-polarization conversion system (PG-PCS) and refractive/diffractive projection optical module. The PG-PCS module transforms the unpolarized Gaussian beam to a linearly polarized beam and it simultaneously homogenizes the spatial intensity profile. The optical projector module has a $30^{\circ}$ field of view, a 22 mm eye relief, and a 10 mm exit pupil diameter with a compact structure. Common acrylic materials were utilized in the optical design process; therefore, the final optical system was lightweight. The whole optical system is suitable for a 0.7 inch liquid crystal on silicon microdisplay (LCOS) with HDTV resolution ($1920{\times}1080$) and $8.0{\mu}m$ pixel pitch.
In this paper, the geometrical properties of the optical system for Head Mounted Display (HMD) were investigated. Also, this work deals with the concept for an optical system design bated on Diffractive Optical Elements (DOE). In designing the optical system for HMD, it is considered that the optical system should have compact, high performance, and comfortable properties while user sees the picture. In order to satisfy these requirements, we applied DOE and aspheric surfaces to the lens so that correction of color and monochromatic aberrations could be obtained. Also, the design and evaluation for the optical system were carried out using the generalized model of the human eye. Finally, it was expected to fulfill all the requirements of an HMD system.

The frequency characteristics of the optical pickup are investigated indirectly from the bode diagram of the open loop system and the actuator. However, there is necessity of acquiring the optical pickup bode diagram in a view of the differences in the frequency characteristics. One of the differences is that bode diagrams of the optical pickup are differ to that of the actuator and the other is that bode diagrams of the open loop system include controller, gains and filters. So this paper presents the method acquiring the optical pickup bode diagram. In addition, usefulness of the optical pickup bode diagram was demonstrated by being applied to the optical pickup design. The reason of reducing the development period and acquiring the frequency characteristics of the optical system, the optical pickup bode diagram has many merits in the optical pickup design before acquiring the stable bode diagram of the open loop system.
In this article, the design of a variable F-number and triple magnification infrared optical system is described. That is a two-in-one optical system that combines an infrared search and track (IRST) system and an electro-optical tracking system (EOTS), where an afocal optical system is added to the IRST optical system designed already. The performance target is determined by analyzing system performance, and then the specification in the optical system design is calculated. This optical system contains a warm stop making it possible that one optics has two different F/# by cutting the size of aperture, and that is designed to suit this optics. The system satisfies the requirement such as a modulation transfer function (MTF). For operational assessment, the movement of the focusing lens group is analyzed over the change of temperature and target distance. By using this optical system, it is possible to develop equipment having two functions, infrared searching and electro-optical tracking.

A new method to design a see-through off-axis head-mounted-display (OA-HMD) optical system with an ellipsoidal surface is proposed, in which a tilted ellipsoidal surface is used as the combiner, which yields the benefits of easier fabrication and testing compared to a freeform surface. Moreover, we realize a coaxial structure in the relay lens group, which is simple and has looser tolerance requirements, thus making assembly easier. The OA-HMD optical system we realize has a simple structure and consists of a combiner and 7 pieces of coaxial relay lenses. It has a $48^{\circ}{\times}36^{\circ}$ field of view (FOV) and 12-mm exit pupil diameter.
Augmented reality (AR) using a head mounted display (HMD) is used in various fields such as military, medicine, manufacturing, gaming, and education. In this paper, we discuss the design and fabrication of the AR optical system, which is most essential for HMD. The AR optical system for HMD requires a wide transparent area in which the augmented image of the display and the real world can be viewed at the same time. To this end, an AR optical system was designed and manufactured by dividing it into three parts according to each characteristic. Also, the refractive index of the ultra-violet (UV) adhesive layer required to make the three optical systems into one complete AR optical system was considered from the design stage to minimize the optical path shift phenomenon when the input light source passes through the UV adhesive layer. In addition, when designing the AR optical system, two aspheric surfaces were used to compensate for off-axis aberration and to be suitable for mass production. Finally, for HMD mass production, an aspheric AR optical system with a thickness of 11 mm, a diagonal field of view of 40°, and a weight of 11.3 g was designed and manufactured.
This paper presents a hybrid single optical system for an LED surgical light that combines the advantages of both lens- and reflector-type single optical systems. The proposed hybrid single optical system includes a lens in the center and the LED light originating from the lens is redirected using a reflector to achieve a high beam spread. Iterative optical software simulations are used to provide data for the design of the lens and reflector for a single optical system, and for a complex optical system for the LED light assembly. The resulting data is also used to fabricate a prototype system. Experiments using the prototype of the hybrid single optical system and a mock-up LED surgical light confirm the system's shadow dilution performance and its applicability to surgical operations.
Since optical systems are used for various applications, there are many designs, depending on the purpose and optical specifications, even though they have similar formations. Optical aberrations of a system are affected by both structure and specifications. Thus, it is very difficult to find the special characteristics of an optical design by using aberration analysis only. Regardless of specifications, a new method to investigate the aberration characteristics of an optical design is presented, using dimensionless design parameters. Four kinds of triplet designs with different applications and specifications are analyzed as examples.
