  • Good performance of spectral-amplitude-coding optical CDMA can be obtained using codes based upon Hadamard matrices, but Hadamard codes have very restrictive code lengths of $2^n$. In this paper a new code family, namely extended Hadamard code, is proposed to relax the code length restriction and the number of simultaneous users. The improved performance of the proposed system is analysed with the consideration of phase-induced intensity noise(PIIN).

  • Spectral-amplitude-coding optical CDMA systems using codes based upon Hadamard matrices have very restrictive code lengths of $2^n$ and high phase-induced intensity noise(PIIN). In this paper a new code family, namely modified Hadamard code, is proposed to relax the code length restriction and the number of simultaneous users. The improved performance of the proposed system is analysed with the consideration of noise.

  • In order to improve the accuracy of simulated results, new UV source was designed. Previously the optical simulation was performed with the symmetric planar UV source. To design new UV source, UV distribution from the plasma fluid code was implanted to the 3-dimensional optical code to generate the visible light distribution. The results from planar UV source and new UV source were compared with the ICCD (Intensified CCD) image in real PDP cell and analyzed the variation of geometries and optical properties.

  • The use of concatenated codes in noncoherent synchronous optical fiber CDMA networks is proposed. The concatenated code sequences are generated using balanced Walsh code sequences and Walsh code sequences. The selection of balanced Walsh code sequences is presented and the design of fully programmable transmitter and receiver is reported. The analysis of the system BER performance shows that multiple-access interference is completely eliminated and the BER performance of the proposed system is better than that of the non-coherent synchronous optical fiber CDMA system using optical orthogonal codes with double hard-limiters.

  • By using the cyclic properties of symmetric balance incomplete block design(BIBD) codes and arrayed-waveguide grating(AWG) routers, a compact optical CDMA network coder-decoder(codec) can be constructed. It can be observed that the various code families obtained by BIBD improve the BER performance compared to M-sequence code.

  • A new code structure for spectral-amplitude-coding optical CDMA based upon reconstructed modified double weight codes is proposed. The newly proposed code possesses ideal cross-correlation properties. By using fiber Bragg grating(FBG) in front of optical decoder, we can get the improved performance of the proposed system with the consideration of phase-induced intensity noise(PIIN).

  • In this paper, we propose a code acquisition algorithm using optical orthogonal code (OOC) for optical code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. Generally, a good code acquisition algorithm offers short mean acquisition time (MAT). The conventional multiple-shift (MS) algorithm consists of two stages and has shorter MAT than that of well-known serial-search (SS) algorithm. This paper proposes a novel code acquisition algorithm called enhanced multiple-shift (EMS) algorithm. By using multiple thresholds, the proposed EMS algorithm provides shorter MAT compared with that of the MS algorithm. The simulation results show that the EMS algorithm presents shorter MAT compared with the MS algorithm in both single-user and multi-user environments.

  • When input power is small, nonideal symmetric balance incomplete block design(BIBD) code design is effective in the spectral-amplitude-code(SAC) optical code-division multiple-access (OCDMA) system. But the number of simultaneous users is not sufficient. To overcome this property, we propose 2-D BIBD codes, where nonideal BIBD codes are used as spectral code and ideal BIBD codes are used as spatial codes. Analytical results show that the number of simultaneous users increases significantly.

  • Optical simulation of the rear and front panel geometries were needed to improve the luminance and efficiency in PDP cells. The 3-dimensional optical code can be used to analyze the variation of geometries and changing of optical properties. In order to improve the accuracy of simulated results, a new UV source, called a multi-cubes UV source, was designed. To design the source, at first UV distribution was calculated with the plasma fluid code and then the UV distribution was transformed to the multi-cube structures in the optical code. Compared to the results from existing UV source, called a planar UV source, could be improved the accuracy of visible light distribution. Simulated results were also compared to the visible distribution measured with the ICCD in a real PDP cell.

  • In this work, we evaluated the performance of soft iterative decoder with soft block decoder in optical storage system. Because optical storage system requires run- length limited code in general, adaptation of the soft decoders such as turbo code or LDPC(low density parity check code) is difficult without soft block decoders. The performance of the overall optical detection system is evaluated and the simplified channel detection is also proposed.
