  • In this paper, we propose a hybrid optical/digital version of the associative memory which improve hardware efficiency and increase convergence rates. Multifocus hololens are used as space-varient optical element for performing inner product and summation function. The real-time input and the stored states of memory matrix is formated using LCTV. One method of adaptively changing the weights of stored vectors during each iteration is implemented electronically. A design for a optical implementation scheme is discussed and the proposed architecture is demonstrated the ability of retrieving with computer simmulation.

  • We describe a volume holographic associative memory using photorefractive material and conventional planar mirror. Multiple hologram is generated with two angular multiplexed writing beams and Fourier transformed object beam in Ba Ti O3 crystal at 0.6328 um. Complete image can be recalled successfully by partial input of the original stored image without any additional thresholding and optical feedback process. It is proved that our system is useful for optical implementation of real-time associative memory and location addressable memory.

  • In this thesis, an optical bidirectional inner-product associative memory model using liquid crystal television is proposed and analyzed theoretically and realized experimentally. The LCTV is used as a SLM(spatial light modulator), which is more practical than conventional SLMs, to produce image vector in terms of computer and CCD camera. Memory and input vectors are recorded into each LCTV through the video input connectors of it by using the image board. Two multi-focus hololenses are constructed in order to perform optical inner-product process. In forward process, the analog values of inner-products are measured by photodetectors and are converted to digital values which are enable to control the weighting values of the stored vectors by changing the gray levels of the pixels of the LCTV. In backward process, changed stored vectors are used to produce output image vector which is used again for input vector after thresholding. After some iterations, one of the stored vectors is retrieved which is most similar to input vector in other words, has the nearest hamming distance. The experimental results show that the proposed inner-product associative memory model can be realized optically and coincide well with the computer simulation.

  • This paper presents design andd verification of a circuit that improves the control-operation problems of Stored Program Optical Computer (SPOC), which is an optical computer using $LiNbO_3$ optical switching element. Since the memory of SPOC takes the Delay Line Memory (DLM) architecture and instructions that are needless of operands should go though memory access stages, SPOC memory have problems; it takes immoderate access time and unnecessary operations are executed in Arithmetic Logical Unit (ALU) because desired operations can't be selectively executed. In this paper, improvement on circuit has been achieved by removing the memory access of instructions that are needless of operands by decoding instructions before locating operand. Unnecessary operations have been reduced by sending operands to some specific operational units, not to all the operational units in ALD. We show that total execution time of a program is minimized by using the Dual Instruction Register(DIR) architecture.

  • An all-optical read only memory utilizing cross gain modulation in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) has been demonstrated for the first time to our knowledge. In our demonstration, an all-optical 2-to-4 line decoder constructed with SOAs has been employed for the construction of this all-optical read only memory. Storing four characters in an American standard code for information interchange (ASCII) format has been successfully carried out. Each character consisting of seven binary bits could be read out at a rate of 10 Giga characters per second.

  • This paper proposes a luminance compensation method using optical sensors to achieve high luminance uniformity of active matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays. The proposed method compensates for the non-uniformity of luminance by capturing the luminance of entire pixels and extracting the characteristic parameters. Data modulation using the extracted characteristic parameters is performed to improve luminance uniformity. In addition, memory size is optimized by selecting an optimal bit depth of the extracted characteristic parameters according to the trade-off between the required memory size and luminance uniformity. To verify the proposed compensation method with the optimized memory size, a 40-inch 1920×1080 AMOLED display with a target maximum luminance of 350 cd/m2 is used. The proposed compensation method considering a 4σ range of luminance reduces luminance error from ± 38.64%, ± 36.32%, and ± 43.12% to ± 2.68%, ± 2.64%, and ± 2.76% for red, green, and blue colors, respectively. The optimal bit depth of each characteristic parameter is 6-bit and the total required memory size to achieve high luminance uniformity is 74.6 Mbits.

  • Recent issues in Optical Disk Drive (ODD) are focused on small size. Blu-ray Disk (BD), using blue laser (405nm wavelength) and high NA (0.85) objective lens. can store 25Gbyte on a conventional 12cm optical disk. Small Form Factor Optical (SFFO) drive uses 3cm disk which can store 1.5Gbyte on a disk. This kind of Small Form Factot Optical (SFFO) drive correspond to PCMCIA type memory (Compact Flash or Micro Drive). Preferably, Optical Disk has relatively low cost of the storage media per Byte rather than PCMCIA type memory. To make Small Form Factor Optical (SFFO) drive. optical pickup and its component must be miniaturized. Miniaturization of the component needs new concept of Optical Pickup. This paper is focused on two main subjects. One is Objective Lens design which can be manufactured on a wafer, and the other is optical path design of the pickup which has 2mm thickness.
