  • The optical transmittance change of Pd thin film due to hydrogen absorption and desorption was examined at room temperature. Hydrogen absorption and desorption cycling effects on optical transmittance were measured 6 times in the pressure range between 0 and 640 torr. Optical transmittance of Pd film was increasing with increasing hydrogen pressure. Ratio of optical transmittance to the change of pressure at $\beta$ phase is bigger than that of low hydrogen pressure range.

  • The light transmittance of optical device is one of the important conditions to improve the product performance and it has researched through the various methods. One of these methods to improve the optical transmittance is to use a pattern on optical surface. The advantages of this method are to simplify the manufacturing process and to easy mass production. If a surface of glass has with the proper patterns, we can expect a great effect on optical transmittance. The purpose of this research is to derive a pattern to get high transmittance from a theoretical approach and to analyze the transmittance through the simulation. And then, we made a sample with a pattern and compared with the results from simulation and experiment.

  • In this paper we propose a novel electrode structure for high transmittance in the Patterned Vertical Alignment (PVA) LC cell. Normally, the transmittance of PVA LC cell is depended on the shape of the electrode and cell gap. We studied the area decreasing the transmittance through the electrode structure for wide viewing angle and proposed new electrode design to change LC director configuration in the area. We use the 'TechWiz LCD' for calculation of the director configuration and optical characteristics. We show the comparison of the calculated optical transmittance between the conventional PVA mode and the proposed PVA mode. From the results, we confirm that the optical transmittance of the proposed structure of the PVA cell becomes higher.

  • The change of optical transmittance of $PdH_x$ thin film due to hydrogen concentration change was measured at room temperature. Pd film($312{\AA}$ thick) was made by thermal evaporation on glass substrate. Hydrogen absorption and desorption cycling effect on optical transmittance was measured 4 times in the pressure range between 0 and 640 torr. Ratio of optical transmittance to the change of ln pressure(torr) increases with increasing number of hydrogen A-D cyclings in the ${\beta}$ phase.

  • A Study has been made of surface modification of various polymers by ion implantation to change the optical transmittance property at ultraviolet ray (UV, $200\sim400nm$). The substrates were PC (Polycarbonate), PET(Polyethyleneteraphtalate) and PP (Polypropylene). The effects of ion implantation on the change of optical transmittance were investigated in relation to ion species, implantation energies and ion fluences. The N, Ar, Kr, Xe ion implantation performed at ion energies from 20 to 50keV. The fluences ranged from $5\times10^{15}$ to $7\times10^{16}ions/cm^2$. UV/Vis transmittance spectroscopy, FT-IR and XPS were used to investigate optical transmittance, chemical structure and surface chemical state of irradiated polymer. Surface color was changed from the yellow to the dark brown and the transmittance of UV ray in the range UV-A($320\sim400nm$) decreased more than 80% after ion implantation.

  • Recently as the esthetic concerns about dental prosthesis have been increased, the nonmetallic post and core systems have been introduced clinically to improve the color and the low optical transmittance of conventional casting metal post and core systems. The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the optical transmittance and the shade changes of all-ceramic crowns with two nonmetallic post and core systems. The experimental groups were classified as follows : Total 27 specimens(9 samples in each group) were evaluated. Group I : Natural teeth as a control group Group II : CosmoPost and $Empress^{(R)}$ core (Ivoclar-Vivadent, Liechtenstein) Group III : $LIGHT-POST^{TM}$ and $LIGHT-CORE^{TM}$ (Bisco, U.S.A.) In all group, all-ceramic crowns were fabricated with the same shade of IPS $Empress^{(R)}$ II (Ivoclar-Vivadent, Liechtenstein) after abutment preparation, and then two kinds of spectrophotometers, UV 3101 PC (Shimadzu, Japan) and CM 503i (Minolta Co. Ltd. Japan), were used to measure the optical transmittance and the color value. The following results were obtained : 1. The optical transmittance of each group without all-ceramic crowns, was siginificantly decreased in order of Group III, I and II (p<0.05). 2. The optical transmittance of each group with all-ceramic crowns cemented, were siginificantly decreased in order of Group I, II and III (p<0.05). 3. In comparison with the shade of all-ceramic crowns, there were no significant differences between groups regardless of the cementation. 4. In comparison with the shade changes in each group after the cementation of all-ceramic crowns, there were no significant differences between groups. From the above results, it is thought that the selection among materials used in this study doesn't influence greatly the esthetic restoration, because the differences of optical transmittance were so small that those were clinically insignificant.

  • To study the optical transmittance through nickel thin films with various thicknesses. Methods: We measured the optical transmittance through thin nickel film with various thicknesses. Results: The thickness dependence of the optical transmittance through nickel thin films deposited by thermal evaporation had been investigated. The optical transmittance rapidly decreased with the Ni film thickness less than 70 nm while it slightly decreased with the thickness more than 70 nm. In the experiment of optical dispersion, most of the light transmitted in the incidence direction. The result of experiment showed that optical dispersion was negligibly. Conclusions: Optical transmittance exponentially decreased as nickel thin film thickness increased.

  • The optical characteristics of transparent electrode with various kind of materials and thickness to be used for organic photovoltaic cells were studied by simulation methodology. It demonstrated that the transmittance varies with the kinds of materials, the number of layers and change in the thickness of each layer. In the case of the structure composed of dielectric/Ag/dielectric, optimized transmittance was higher than 90% at 550 nm and the thickness of the Ag layer was ~10nm. Top and bottom dielectric materials can be changed with different refractive index and extinction coefficient. The relation between the optical transmittance of device and transparent electrode with different refractive indices was discussed as well. By processing numerical simulations, an optimized optical transmittance can be obtained by tunning the thickness and materials of transparent electrode.

  • By adding La₂O₃ to optical multicomponent glass composition, after making mother glass and core fiber that enable to enlarge the infrared transmittance region, then surveyed the optical properties. Through thermal analysis of the glass abstained by melt-quenching after selecting stable basic composition on devitrification and replace SiO₂ by 4-12wt% La₂O₃. As La₂O₃ increases up to l2wt% transition temperature, refractive index, density, deformation temperature increased, whereas thermal expansion coefficient decreased. As a result of inspectig transmittance in UV/VIS/IR region, visable region indicated the decrease of transmittance by increasing the La₂O₃ and transmittance region was enlarged by increasing the La₂O₃ in IR region. Also, fabricate core fiber at 820℃ and severy the optical loss we could fact that La₂O₃ composition added 12wt% showed the minimum optical loss.

  • [ $In_2O_3-ZnO(IZO)$ ] and $In_2O_3-ZnO-SnO_2(IZTO)$ thin films were prepared on EAGLE 2000 glass webs in a Ar gas by RF-Magnetron sputtering. Electrical resistivity and optical transmittance of the films were investigated. IZO, IZTO film showed excellent optical transmittance of 85 % at the visible $400{\sim}$780 nm wavelength. Electrical properties of IZO film have $6.50{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}cm$ (95 $In_2O_3$ : 5 ZnO wt.%) and $5.20{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}cm$ (90 : 10 wt.%), IZTO film have $8.00{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}cm$ (90 $In_2O_3$ : 3 ZnO : 7 $SnO_2$ wt.%) and $6.50{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}cm$ (90 : 7 : 3 wt.%). Substitution of SnO to ZnO in ITO films showed slightly lower electrical conductivity than ITO film but showed similar optical transmittance.
