A 3D ultrasound image is desired in many medical examinations. However, the implementation of a 2D array, which is needed for a 3D image, is challenging with respect to fabrication, interconnection and cabling. A 2D sparse array, which needs fewer elements than a dense array, is a realistic way to achieve 3D images. Because the number of ways the elements can be placed in an array is extremely large, a method for optimizing the array configuration is needed. Previous research placed the target point far from the transducer array, making it impossible to optimize the array in the operating range. In our study, we focused on optimizing a 2D sparse array transducer for 3D imaging by using a simulated annealing method. We compared the far-field optimization method with the near-field optimization method by analyzing a point-spread function (PSF). The resolution of the optimized sparse array is comparable to that of the dense array.
This paper concerns a least square method for pattern optimization of a thinned sensor array in which the squared error between a desired pattern and a synthesized one is minimized. A weighting function is applied in the function with respect to the array visual range for a symmetric and asymmetric configuration for sensor spacing. An exponential weighting function is proposed to control the sidelobes efficiently around the mainbeam and to generate a uniform sidelobe. The resulting pattern may be employed to eliminate incoming interferences distributed uniformly around the array visual range.
A time-reversal mirror (TRM) is useful in diverse areas, such as reverberation ing, target echo enhancement and underwater communication. In underwater communication, the bit error rate has been improved significantly due to the increased signal-to-noise ratio by spatio-temporal focusing. This paper deals with two issues. First, the optimal number of array elements for a given environment was investigated based on the exploitation of spatial diversity. Second, an algorithm was developed to determine the optimal location of the given number of array elements. The formulation is based on a genetic algorithm maximizing the contrast between the foci and area of interest as an objective function. In addition, the developed algorithm was applied to the matched field processing with ocean experimental data for verification. The sea-going data and simulation showed almost 3 dB improvement in the output power at the foci when the array elements were optimally distributed.

The radiation characteristics of a phased array antenna is changed according to the beam steering angle. The monopulse tracking system calculates the prediction angle using the radiation characteristics of antenna. Therefore, the monopulse ratio curve is changed according to the beam steering angle for the monopulse tracking system using a phase array antenna, and the tracking accuracy goes down. In the case of a single-channel monopulse system, the monopulse rate curve is controlled by the configuration variables of the system. In this paper, a simplified formula was presented for adaptive control of monopulse system configuration variables on beam steering angle. The presented formula can induce a uniform monopulse ratio curve for the beam steering angle as well as the phased array antenna design parameters.
An underwater sound surveillance system detects and tracks enemy ships in real-time using hydrophone arrays, in which seabed-mounted sensor arrays play a pivotal role. In this paper the conceptual design of seabed-mounted, cylindrical hydrophone arrays for use in shallow coastal waters is performed via finite element calculations. To stabilize the receiving characteristics under the ocean ambient noise, a technique for whitening the ambient noise spectrum using a metal baffle is proposed. Optimization of the array configuration is performed to achieve the directivity in the vertical and azimuthal directions. And the effects of the sonar dome shape and material on the structural vibration and sound scattering properties are studied. It is demonstrated that a robust hydrophone array, having a sensitivity deviation less than 4 dB over the frequency range of interest, can be obtained through the whitening of the ambient noise, the optimization of the array configuration, and the design of acoustically transparent sonar domes.
Given a cubic space, it is easy to uniformly illuminate the floor with light sources placed on top. However, little has been reported about uniform illumination on walls with the same configuration of light sources. Here we present a luminaire consisting of nine light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with perfect Lambertian distribution, placed on the top as a 3 × 3 rectangular LED array. The distances between LEDs and tilt angles of each individual LED are adjustable and optimized by an annealing algorithm. After optimization, the array produces a rectangular illumination pattern on one wall with a uniformity of about 89%. Analysis shows that the tilt angles of individual LEDs are key parameters for uniform side illumination. In a scenario that is more practical, the tilt angles of all the LEDs are set to be the same, only decreasing the uniformity to 83%.

The optimum design of a structure requires the determination of the economical member size and shape of the structure which satisfies the design condition and function. In this study, the process of design automatization of three-dimensional truss structure introduces the optimization technique tests its application in the design automatization, proposes its application method and applies the example structure of the parabolic antenna truss. Using the Formex Algebra of configuration function, the structure's mesh-generation is automatized. By using the program developed in this study, the input member array, member size and load condition designer can generate the input data file for the structure analysis and optimum design. This study is aimed at the development of a design automatization system that search for tile optimum value of a structure design by observing the structure's sensitivity from the modification of member array and member property.

In this paper, we propose the optimization of subarray configurations for linear array to minimize the side lobe level (SLL) in sum beam pattern based on the genetic algorithm. The operations of genetic algorithm are modified to be applied to subarray configurations. Using the proposed method, we construct subarray structure with 16 irregular subarray elements from 40 linear array elements to minimize the SLL in sum beam pattern in case of applying the adaptive beamforming(ABF) to suppress the jamming power, whose the SLL is 10 dB lower than that of regular subarray configuration.

The BGA Package has been the area array package of choice for several rears. Recently, the transition has been to finer pitch configuration called Chip Scale Packages (CSP). Several of these package types are available at 0.5 mm pitch, requiring surface mount assemblers to evaluate and optimize various elements of the assembly process. This presentation describes the issues associated with making the transition from BGA to CSP assembly. Areas addressed will include the accuracy of pick and piece equipment, printed wiring board lines and spaces, PWB vias, in-circuit test issues, solder paste printing, moisture related factors, rework and reliability. The transition to 0.5 mm pitch requires careful evaluation of the board design, solder paste selection, stencil design and component placement accuracy. At this pitch, ball and board pad diameters can be as small as 0.25 mm and 0.20 mm respectively. Drilled interstitial vias are no longer possible and higher ball count packages require micro-via board technology. The transition to CSP requires careful evaluation of these issues. Normal paste registration and BGA component tolerances can no longer achieve the required process levels and higher accuracy pick and place machines need to be implemented. This presentation will examine the optimization of these critical assembly operations, contrast the challenges at 0.5 mm and also look at the continuation of the process to incorporate smaller pitch flip chip devices.

In this paper, an analysis about the elevation angle accuracy degradation of an APAR(Airport Precision Approach Radar) due to the multi-path effect using a phased array antenna was performed. An APAR installed around a runway of airport will be continuously affected in a runway surface of the fixed environment. In this paper, an analysis about the elevation angle accuracy degradation of APAR due to the multi-path effect of runway surface was conducted through a calculation of monopluse slope and sum/difference beam pattern analysis of array antenna. Also, a difference pattern for monopulse to minimize this degradation was optimized in an appropriate configuration to improve a elevation angle accuracy. Finally, a degree of improvement of elevation angle accuracy was confirmed by calculating a monopulse slope including the ground reflection after applying optimized difference patterns of array antenna.
