  • Lowe syndrome is X-linked gene disorder, characterized by cataracts, renal dysfunction and brain abnormalities. Oral healthcare of young patients with Lowe syndrome could be easily neglected due to the uncooperative behavior or other systemic condition of the child. We are presenting a case of successful treatment under general anesthesia with uncooperative child with Lowe syndrome. A 3-year old boy with Lowe syndrome visited Seoul National University Dental Hospital for multiple caries. He had been suffering from congenital cataract, medullary nephrocalcinosis and hypotonia. Multiple caries were observed from clinical and radiographic examination. Concerning behavior management problem and possibility of aspiration due to hypotonia, dental treatment under general anesthesia was planned. Left upper primary first molar was extracted to prevent further infection. Other teeth were treated with Stainless steel crown or composite resin restoration based upon the extent and the severity of dental caries. Under general anesthesia, dental procedure was carried out successfully and safely. Considering uncooperative behavior and other medical conditions of the patient, general anesthesia could be effective. Home oral care and periodic visit to dental clinic should be emphasized to the caregiver of patient with Lowe syndrome, considering the susceptibility of dental caries and other oral manifestation.

  • The purpose of this survey research was to investigate the relationship between the health promotion and the Oral Health knowledge of 230 adults which lived in Kyunggi-do using SPSSWIN 12.0. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. Objects who take the periodic health examination was 38.2% and the opposite case was 61.8%. And the reseach subjects who take the periodic dental examination was 30.7% and the opposite case was 69.3%. 2. The research subjects who take the Oral Health education was 11.8% and the opposite case was 88.2%. 3. The relationship between the general characteristic and health promotion status of the research subjects taking periodic examination showed statistically significant difference at items of ages, occupation and the reason of training (p < 0.05). 4. In case of the relationship of the Oral Health knowledge according to sex distinction, 68.4% of all research subjects thought that the appropriate toothbrushing time was around 3 minutes, but it did not show significant difference statistically. 5. In case of the Oral Health knowledge according to age, it showed significant difference statistically at item of 'the toothbrushing time is after each meal and before retiring (p = .032)', item of 'if you use the fluorine, you can prevent the dental caries (p = .011)', and item of 'foods causing the dental caries are a chocholate and a biscuit, etc. (p-.044). 6. In case of the Oral Health knowledge according to the occupation, 68.4% of all reasearch subjects thought that the appropriate toothbrushing time was around 3 minutes (p = .043), and it showed significant difference statistically. 7. In case of he relationship between reseach subjects taking the periodic examination and the Oral Health knowledge, it did not show significant difference statistically.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the awareness of the performance and necessity of oral health promotion activities and seek ways to revitalize the professional role of dental hygienists in oral healthcare for the efficient oral care of the elderly. Methods: Eighty-five dental hygienists in charge of oral health promotion projects at public health centers and 38 dental hygienists in network dental clinical trials were investigated for their learning experience, performance experience, feasibility, and necessity of dental hygienists for general and oral health service items for the elderly. The collected data were analyzed using frequency analysis, chi-square test, and Mann-Whitney U test. Results: The degree of performance possibility according to the learning experience and performance experience of the dental hygienist for the whole body and oral health promotion activity items for the elderly showed that the degree of performance possibility was higher among those with experience compared to the non-experienced person, and it was statistically significantly higher (p<0.05). Conclusions: The dental hygienist's professional oral health service is a necessary system to improve practical knowledge and skills and to provide a wide range of professional oral health services for the elderly.

  • The purpose of the study is to confirm the effect of the oral health management program in exemplary kindergartens for prevent the dental caries. The study performs the survey on the parents about the changes in the oral health behaviors after the oral health education in April 2012 and measures the patient hygiene performance (PHP) index before the education, after the education and 3 weeks after the education to assess the removal capability to plaque on the teeth surface for the children. The analysis is performed on 130 people who join the program and respond the survey. There is no change in the behavior related to the tooth brushing of children after the oral health education. No change is found from the interest in the oral health education (p>0.05) but the recognition in the importance of the tooth positively change, as well as recognition of the tooth brushing method and the reaction to recommending to tooth brushing. The PHP index of children is significantly improved from 3.87 before the education through 2.71 after the education and 3.27 3 weeks after the education (p<0.001). The observation from the patents shows that their children have interest in preventing the cavities including 33.1% after having xylitol and 60.7% after the oral health education. In conclusion, the study confirms the effect of the oral health management program in exemplary kindergartens to prevent the cavities, meaning that it is required to activate the programs and keep implementing the programs including providing xylitol and education for teachers, parents and children to habituate the oral health behavior of the children and completely learn toothbrushing method under continuous management and reeducation.
