  • Objectives : This study is performed to develop the oriental medical rating scale of knee pain and to assess its validity. Methods : 250 knee pain patients completed the previously accepted rating scale of knee pain(VAS, WOMAC(pain, function, stiffness), 6 minute walk test(number of steps, distance)) and oriental medical rating scale of knee pain which was developed by Hwang et al at 2012, before and after the 6 weeks acupuncture treatment. Comparing these results, we assessed the validity of oriental medical rating scale. Results : Comparing oriental medical rating scale of knee pain before acupuncture treatment with VAS, WOMAC(pain, function, stiffness) and 6 minute walk test(number of steps, distance), oriental medical rating scale showed correlation with VAS, WOMAC(pain, function, stiffness) and showed the highest correlation with WOMAC(function). Comparing the change of oriental medical rating scale of knee pain after 6 weeks of acupuncture treatment with the change of VAS, WOMAC(pain, function, stiffness) and 6 minute walk test(number of steps, distance) after 6 weeks, change of oriental medical rating scale showed correlation with the change of VAS, WOMAC(pain, function, stiffness) and showed the highest correlation with the change of WOMAC(function). Through factor analysis of oriental medical rating scale items, 4 factors(pain, swelling, deformation of the knee, thermal sense of the knee), 17 items were extracted. Conclusions : Oriental medical rating scale of knee pain reflected the patient's pain, functional limitation and stiffness well. And oriental medical rating scale reflected the patient's functional improvement after the treatment well.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to report the efficacy of using oriental medical treatment(herb-medicine, acupuncture) with Melonix Calyx Vomiting Therapy for atypical facial pain. Methods : We experienced two cases of atypical facial pain treated with oriental medical treatment(herb-medicine, acupuncture) and Melonix Calyx Vomiting Therapy(MCVT). MCVT is a traditional treatment, which induces vomiting by eating Melonix Calyx powder with water. To evaluate the results of this treatment, we used the Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) and Pain Rating Scale(PRS). Result : After using MCVT with oriental medical treatment, VAS, PRS and clinical symptoms of 2 patients were improved remarkably. Conclusion : This study suggests that using MCVT with oriental medical treatment is effective on atypical facial pain.

  • Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a sporadic progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized clinically by various combinations of parkinsonian, autonomic, cerebellar, or pyramidal signs and pathologically by cell loss, gliosis, and ${\alpha}$-synuclein-positive glial cytoplasmic inclusions in several brain and spinal cord structures. This is a clinical report about a 69-year-old female who had MSA treated by oriental medical treatment and evaluated by Unified Multiple System Atrophy Rating Scale (UMSARS). The patient was treated with herb medicine Chungsimyeonj-aeumgami(淸心蓮子飮加味), acupuncture, moxibustion and cupping. After treatment, the patient's symptoms improved meaningfully and the score decreased in UMSARS Part I, II. This suggests that oriental medical treatment could be effective to improve MSA patients' symptoms. It is necessary to have more observations and many cases of patients with MSA.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to observe the effect of Intranasal Bloodletting Therapeutics on the Allergic Rhinitis. Methods : 8 patients were treated by intranasal bloodletting therapeutics to recover from allergic rhinitis. The symtoms were evaluated by total nasal sympton score(TNSS), verbal numerical rating scale(VNRS). Results : Total nasal sympton score(TNSS) was significantly improved and verbal numerical rating scale(VNRS) was decreased in all cases. Conclusion : Intranasal bloodletting therapeutics is effective to allergic Rhinitis.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to identify the clinical effects of Chiljehyangbuhwan in the treatment of dysmenorrhea patients. Methods : We studied fifty patients who visited Kyung Hee University Oriental Medical Center from July, 2004 to August, 2004. Women with organic disease such as ut. myoma, ov. cyst and pelvic inflammatory disease were excluded from this study. We treated them with Chiljehyangbuhwan for one menstrual cycle. The severity of dysmenorrhea were measured by MVRS (Multidimensional Verbal Rating scale), VRS (Verbal Rating scale) and VAS (Visual Analog Scale). Results : Chiljehyangbuhwan significantly decreased the severity of dysmenorrhea. Furthermore Chiljehyangbuhwan had an effect on dysmenorrhea for next menstrual cycle without taking. Chiljehyangbuhwan did not show hepatic and renal virulence. Conclusion : This study shows that Chiljehyangbuhwan has remarkable effects on dysmenorrhea patients and that effects continue to next menstrual cycle without taking medicine.

Methods : A male patient, 34 years old, who has paresthesia and migration on L-spine MRI was evaluated after conservative oriental medical and chuna treatment by Visual Analog Scale(VAS), Numeric Rating Scale(NRS), Straight Leg Rasing Test(SLRT), Sensation, MRI follow-up. Results : 1. Visual Analog Scale(VAS), Numeric Rating Scale(NRS), Straight Leg Rasing Test(SLRT), Sense was significantly improved after conservative oriental medical and chuna treatment. 2. Also it was observed that herniated disc was decreased by L-spine MRI follow-up. Conclusions : Conservative oriental medical and chuna treatment can be effective for decreasing pain and improving paresthesia, also decreasing the volume of herniated disc.

  • Objectives : This study was to investigate the effect of Oriental medical treatment on ALS. Methods : We investigated 12 ALS patients which were admitted to Gwang-Ju O.M. hospital from Oct. 14, 2008 to Nov. 14, 2008. All patients were treated by SAAM-acupuncture, herb medication, Bee venom Pharmacopuncture therapy, Needle-embedding therapy, etc. We evaluated patients using the Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis Functional Rating Scale-Revised(ALSFRS-R), Medical Research Council (MRC) Scale. Results : After 30 days, mean ALSFRS-R score of patients was improved from $28.42{\pm}7.83$ to $29.08{\pm}7.99$, and mean MRC Scale of patients was improved from $24.79{\pm}8.37$ to $25.34{\pm}8.45$. But in both cases, the variation was not statistically significant. After 30 days, mean ALSFRS-R score and mean MRC Scale of patients was more improved in subjects with bulbar-onset, onset age: 51-60yrs., disease duration: 24-48mo. And the results showed partially significant difference. Conclusions : We think that the results of this case be a pilot study that proves the effect of Oriental Medical treatment on ALS.
