Analysis of Lightning Overvoltage and Shielding Effect of Arrester and Overhead Grounding Wire on DC Railroad (직류전차선로의 뇌과전압 해설 및 피뢰기와 가공지선 차폐효과 검토)

  • This paper presents the influence of the lightning overvoltage and the shielding effect of lightning arresters and overhead grounding wires on the DC railroad systems. Modeling of railroad system is established in ATPDraw to perform the simulation and the line constants of railroad were calculated using ATP_LCC. When a direct lightning strikes to the DC railroad, the result of simulation reveals that the shielding effect of arresters is reduced at messenger, trolly-wire, and the shielding effects of overhead grounding wire is over 90% than the case which does not include it. Therefore it is evaluated that overhead grounding wires should be installed in the DC railroad line.

  • Power system restoration following a partial or complete blackout starts with energizing of primary transmission lines. Because system changed rapidly during early restoration process, transformer energization and load pickup is executed to maintain the power system stability. However unexpected problem such as harmonic overvoltage may be arisen during energizing transformer. The reason of harmonic overvoltage is known as transformer saturation and magnetizing in-rush current and so on, but it is difficult to estimate the condition of occurrence. This paper describes the analysis of the harmonic overvoltage while unloaded transformer is energized using PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • The large scale industry needs high voltage converters. Therefore series connection of power semiconductor devices is necessary. It is important to prevent a device induced the overvoltage above ratings by proper voltage balancing in the field of IGBT series connection. In addition, the overvoltage induced by a stray inductance has to be limited in the high power circuit. This paper proposes a new gate control scheme which can balance the voltage properly and limit the overshoot by control the slope of collector voltage under series connected IGBT turn-off transient. The propose gate control scheme limits the overvoltage by sensing the collector voltage and controlling the gate signal actively. The new series connected IGBT gate driver is made and its validity is verified by the experimental results for series connected IGBT circuit.

  • In the case of synchronous machines, certain power system disturbances cause the induced rotor current to assume negative values when no static converter is present. A converter, however, prevents negative current from flowing, so that overvoltages occur. The overvoltages can be effectively limited as crowbar circuit using GTO. This newly proposed crowbar circuit with current limiting resistor absorbs energy when overvoltage comes from power system repeatedly and verified through experiment

  • This paper is analysed by switching overvoltage on operating reclosing in 154 [kV] combined transmission systems. Combined transmission systems are modeled by EMTP/ATPDraw program. It is fault condition that simulate high resistance earth fault. The simulation is carried out considering variation of parameters such as resistance value of fault point and rate of underground line.

  • This paper describes switching overvoltage generated during transient state in 22.9kV combined distribution systems. For analysis, distribution overhead line, underground cable and surge arrester are modeled using EMTP/ATPDraw. Simulation results show switching overvoltage according to various kind of parameter and systems such as closing angle and cable length.

  • A new algorithm for calculation of overcurrent and overvoltage at load for parallel two-wire transmission line with nonlinear protection circuits induced by and external electromagnetic pulse is suggested. The rigorous solution is obtained for a particular type of the incident waveform and protection circuit. The validity of our algorithm is checked by comparing numerical results to the analytic solution in the particular case.

  • In a design of ballast for discharge lamp, various kind of protection circuit are essential for safe operation. In this paper, overvoltage and current detection, no-load detection, lamp-fault detection, end of lamp detection for protection are introduced. Individual circuit operation and their function are described with the base that all circuit form is similar with overvoltage protection circuit.

  • This paper presents a circuit design far clamping the overvoltages across the GTOs in three-level GTO inverters. The proposed circuit has two roles as follows; one is to minimize the power dissipation in each GTO. It can be achieved by clamping the overvoltage to half that of the DC-link voltage as exactly as possible. The other is to get blocking voltage balancing between the inner GTOs and the outer GTOs.
