The purpose of this study is to clarify the identity of place expressed by people living in a new community. First of all, this study defines the concept of place and then grasps what the identity of place means through the documentary studies, and experiential levels of the identity of place are examined as well. Through the field survey on a new community as a case based on interviews and cognitive maps, the identity of place is analyzed in terms of physical features, activities and meanings with relation to levels of visibility, cognition and value, and besides, attractive places and unattractive places are examined for enhancing the identity of place in a new community.

This study aims to identify the characteristics of expression of place identity shown in public design of Choryang Ibagugil in Dong-gu, Busan and analyze them from physical aspects and from psychological ones. Choryang Ibagugil has special historicity indicating that it is a hillside road(Sanbokdoro) dwelling site created after the 6.25 Korean War and the quintessence of Busan. In addition, the site is a good example that used the topographic characteristics as they were and used the road for movement called as 'gil' to design public environment. Ibagugil connected to Sanbokdoro (i.e. Mangyang-ro) starting from the big road (Busan Station) where there was a large floating population represented the regional identity to public design by the medium of 'gil.' As a result of analyzing the characteristics of expression of place identity based on the current status discovered, our conclusions could be drawn as follows: First, place forms identity under interpersonal relationships and there is a story on the lives of people in the contexts between place and identity. Second, place identity is an independent specialty of a certain place and expression of place identity into public design makes the place more place-like. Ibagugil expressed its identity while adapting to the topographic characteristics of hillside road(Sanbokdoro). Third, adjacent public buildings were included into Ibagugil, thus highlighting the placeness, although it is considered that it is ambiguous to determine it as public design in the current-status analysis. Fourth, from the public value aspect, slumized hillside road(Sanbokdoro) was improved, which led to improvement in quality of environment and improvement in pride of local residents. Resultingly, it can be said that the place identity appeared in the public design of Choryang Ibagugil were the stories that happened in this place. Moreover, the indication of future image of how the place will be developed in the future makes the value of the place more significant. Therefore, in public design for expressing place identity, utilization of independent speciality of the site is considered to be an important factor. By doing so, 'place becomes a real place' and 'place can get an independent identity.' Going further, it comes to get the characteristics of 'being the place as it is.'

The purpose of this study is to propose the design elements useful to give place identity to street space. The theory for place identity is studied and the components-Physical element, Sense, Program, Activity, Context-for identity of place is created. In the case study of SamcheongdongGil, the qualitative research method of Free Picturing Technique and Cognitive Mapping is executed and the samples gathered from the research are analyzed. In the process of analysis, the contents of qualitative evaluation by users is put in order as components for identity of place. Moreover, the design elements for street space are extracted from the case study and theories of urban design. The design elements are summarized as the followings: street pattern with high permeability, various streetscapes, greenscapes, semi public(private) spaces, the third places, public arts, transparent facades, and outdoor activities. Finally, the fruits and boundary of this study are described and the importance of place identity is.

Identity of the place where the physical location and time and spatial context, and is structured as socially agreed symbols to build a consistent image, while fraught with Differentiation can be achieved through integration. And discrimination and the practical and effective deployment of an integrated image to be useful as a guide for the top design 'Design Guidelines' are, The findings, where the identity used to establish guidelines for the design for the following conclusions can be drawn. First, of public space design guidelines agreed upon by the public and social identity as the basis to establish a new identity as a contemporary and practical plan for this is to provide guidance. Second, the design guidelines in principle, the physical elements and activities of the parent and the temporal and spatial context and meaning were overridden. Third, the horizontal axis with respect to the identity and principles to guide development in the detail, and the vertical axis as a place to build an image in order for the specific design items are listed. Fourth, the guidelines can set a specific motif, and coverage including identity of the place. Fifth, by applying image and schematic the identity can be Implemented effectively and clearly. Without interfering with the designer's creativity and implement new image of the place, Design guidelines should study how a reasonable instructions.

This study aims at advancing waterfront of Pusan Port and attempting to establish an identity through studying characteristics of place in Pusan Port. The place is consisted of two elements ; orientation and identity, which is expressed clearly the environmental totality including the character and space. The urban waterfront is also one of the place pattern, and that is consist of land area, water area, and transit zone combining two areas. Although there are a lot of primary factors to be able to make the most of the character and identity in Pusan port, badly planned development prevents the plan promoting the sense of place in urban waterfront. The point in the waterfront development plan of Pusan Port is how to secure aminities based on Identity and Orientation; node, landmark, edge, path, district. The result of this study is for planners to develop more and systematic approaches which could utilize waterfront.

본 연구에서는 지명연구 방법의 다양화를 위해 장소정체성과 스케일 정치 그리고 영역경합의 세 가지 개념을 사용하여 충주지역 지명의 특성을 밝혀보고자 하였다. 먼저 장소정체성과 관련하여 새로 바뀐 충주시 '수안보면'은 이전의 지명인 상모면보다 지역이 가지고 있는 천연자원인 온천의 속성을 크게 부각시킬 뿐만 아니라 정체성의 구성 조건인 '수적 유일성'과 '질적 동일성', 그리고 '자아 동일성'을 가지고 있어 이 지역의 장소정체성을 잘 드러내고 있다. 둘째, 지명을 통한 스케일 정치는 스케일의 상승과 하강으로 구분하여 살펴볼 수 있는데 지명 스케일 상승의 사례로는 충주시 이류면의 옛 지명인 이안면을 들 수 있고, 하강의 사례로는 조선시대 읍호승강제에 따른 충주의 읍호승강과 1917년 행정구역개편 때 충주군현 지명이 충주면으로 축소된 경우와 일본에 의한 월악산의 한자지명의 변경을 들 수 있다. 셋째, 지명 영역변화의 사례로는 지명 표기자가 지명 영역과 더불어 변화한 경우와 그렇지 않은 경우가 있는데, 먼저 지명 표기자가 지명 영역과 함께 변화한 사례로는 충주시 용두동과 이류면 금곡리가 있다. 지명 표기자가 변하지 않으면서 지명 영역이 변화한 경우는 현재 충주시를 동서로 흐르는 달천을 들 수 있다. 결론적으로 본 연구결과는 지명이 장소정체성을 재현하고 구축하는데 활용될 수 있다는 점을 시사한다.

Purpose: This place, which is currently becoming an issue due to historical preservation and landscape protection, is also a place where urban residents around Taereung actually visit often. Thus, this study aims to analyze the importance of the evaluating factors in creating a relatable image of the city. Methods: Evaluation items were selected by reviewing related books and research literatures and reassessing the reviewed items through an expert group interview (FGI). For the selected evaluation items, the relative importance of the evaluation items for the place image was analyzed by applying the hierarchical analysis technique (AHP) to each user group. Result: A place becomes a memory in people's experiences and time, and it has the image and identity of the region where those experiences and memories are found again as a space called "place". The method of analyzing the importance of evaluation items between place images used in this study quantified the factors recognized as abstract images and identified the degree of influence between elements, but has limitation in that it targeted specific places. However, the analysis method on the place image recognition suggests the use of itemized variables for characteristics between place images, so future research on the identity of other place images can be conducted together. Also, the evaluation method of the image that recognizes the place has an objective meaning in that it can measure the image of the place quantitatively. In the future, it can be applied in creating an image forming factor or urban identity for place recognition in many regions

Although there are a lot of primary factors to be able to make characters and identities in Pusan South Harbor, Badly Planned development prevented enhancing the sense of place in urban waterfront. The point in the waterfront development is how to secure amenities based on indentity and orientation; node, landmark, edge, path, district. This study aims at developing waterfront area of Pusan South Harbor and attempting to establish an identity through studying characteristics of ‘places’ in Pusan South Harbor. The place consists of two elements; orientation and identity, which can be explained the environmental totality, ‘character’ and ‘space’ respectively. The urban waterfront has strong characteristics which consists of land area, water area, and transit zone combining two areas. The place of Pusan South Harbor is analysed those four elements. We proposed objectives and criteria which can be used in enhancing the sense of this place.

The spatial background is a key element in the development of the character's identity. It is very important to understand the symbolic significance of the spatial background in Eileen Chang's Chuan Qi, a collection of short stories and novellas. The space in Chang's Chuan Qi largely consists of Shanghai and Hong Kong. Smaller spaces include the characters' abodes, such as the mansion and apartment. Even smaller spaces are the interior of a room. The mansion is where she experienced abuse and neglect from her father during her adolescence. The apartment is a place of attachment, as was the place where she lived with her mother. This paper categorizes the mansion, her father's abode, as "a place of daydreams," "a place of death and graves," and the apartment, her mother's abode, as "a place of female independence," "a place of hope for a better life," This paper then examines these spaces to analyze how the symbolic meaning of space influences the identity of the characters.

인간 거주의 오랜 역사와 완충적인 지정학적 위치에 따른 한국 문화의 통시적 역동성과 공시적 다양성은 한국 지명의 이중성과 중층적 다양성에 중요한 배경과 원인이 되어 왔다. 이러한 한국 지명의 변동 과정은 상이한 사회적 주체들이 문화의 의미를 둘러싸고 벌이는 갈등과 경합의 권력 관계를 연구하는 문화정치학 분야에 비교적 적절한 연구 대상으로 주목된다. 한국 지명에 대한 문화정치적 연구의 당위성을 확보하기 위하여, 본 연구는 장소 아이덴티티, 영역 경합, 스케일 정치라는 개념을 중심으로 한국 지명의 문화정치적 연구를 위한 이론의 구성을 시도하였다. 지명은 자연과 사회적 주체를 지칭하며 이들의 아이덴티티를 재현하는 과정을 분석하는데 유용한 이론으로서 안게른과 카스텔스의 아이덴티티 이론, 페쇠의 동일시 이론, 홀의 디코딩 이론, 볼로쉬노프(바흐찐)의 이데올로기적 기호 이론이 사례를 통하여 실험되었다. 사회적 주체의 아이덴티티와 이데올로기를 재현하는 지명을 매개로 장소 아이덴티티 내지는 영역적 아이덴티티가 구축되는 과정에는 필연적으로 포함과 배제의 권력 관계가 개입되어 있다. 이러한 과정을 분석하기 위해서는 아이덴티티, 이데올로기, 권력 관계라는 요소들을 반드시 고려해야하므로, 경계, 영역, 영역성, 영역화, 영역적 아이덴티티 등과 같은 개념을 포용하는 스케일 정치라는 관점을 약간의 사례에 실험적으로 적용해 보았다. 끝으로, 본 연구는 다양한 문화정치이론을 토대로 일정한 범위의 지역을 단위로 하는 기초적이고 학제적인 지명 연구를 통해 지명의 문화정치적 사례가 연구되어야 함을 제안하였다.
