  • In this study, the characteristics of partial discharge was measured for the four core silicone cable (0.6/1.0 kV, $1.0SQ{\times}4C$) with insulated part of 15 cm and conductor of 1cm. The following results have been confirmed as a result of this study. When the first line of cable is connected to the positive electrode and the second, third line of cable is connected to the negative electrode, it found that the inception voltage and extinction voltage decreased with increasing the line of negative electrode, and the partial discharge charge quantity(Q) increases, while the number of discharge occurrence has decreased. The inception voltage and extinction voltage of partial discharge has decreased with increasing the degradation rate in the 33%, 67%, 100%. Also, it confirmed that the partial discharge charge quantity(Q) and the number of discharge occurrence has decreased.

  • Noticing that action of gaseous phase in insulating oil concerns to the discharging characteristics, I investigated the smalness pressure effects on quantity of the partial discharge and discharging pulse frequency. Tests are carried out between the niddle points in insulating oil at pressure being changed by gradual charge of inert gas Ar. At pressure as low as of 0.1-0.5 torr pulse frequency and maximum partial discharge reach peak while at pressure haigher than 20 torr no pulse is observed. The fact that pulse frequency has peak value at certain presure, which is changed either by charging Ar or by adding oil, implies that the action of gaseous phase depends on pressure. Test results are that partial discharge pulse are governed by pressure of Ar-charged oil, and less partial discharge pulses correspond to smaller bubbles whereas more partial descharge pulses correspond to larger bubbles.

  • Polymer insulating materials such as cross linked polyethylene (XLPE) are employed in electric cables used for extra high voltage. These materials can degrade due to chemical, mechanical and electric stress, possibly caused by voids, the presence of extrinsic materials and protrusions. Therefore, this study measured discharge patterns, discharge phase angle, quantity and occurrence frequency as well as changes in XLPE under different temperatures and applied voltages. To quantitatively analyze the irregular partial discharge patterns measured, the discharge patterns were examined using a statistical program. A three layer sample was fabricated, wherein the upper and lower layers were composed of non-void XLPE, while the middle layer was composed of an air void and copper particles. After heating to room temperature and $50^{\circ}C$ and $80^{\circ}C$ in silicone oil, partial discharge characteristics were studied by increasing the voltage from the inception voltage to the breakdown voltage. Partial discharge statistical analysis showed that when the K-means clustering was carried out at 9 kV to determine the void discharge characteristics, the amount discharged at low temperatures was small but when the temperature was increased to $80^{\circ}C$, the discharge amount increased to be 5.7 times more than that at room temperature because electric charge injection became easier. An analysis of the kurtosis and the skewness confirmed that positive and negative polarity had counterclockwise and clockwise clustering distribution, respectively. When 5 kV was applied to copper particles, the K-means was conducted as the temperature changed from $50^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$. The amount of charge at a positive polarity increased 20.3% and the amount of charge at a negative polarity increased 54.9%. The clustering distribution of a positive polarity and negative polarity showed a straight line in the kurtosis and skewness analyses.

  • With the continuous development in insulation of electrical equipment design, the reliability of the system has been enhanced. However, in the manufacturing process and during operation under continues stresses introduce local defects, such as voids between interfaces that can responsible to occurrence of partial discharge (PD), electric field distortion and accumulation of charges. These defects may lead to localize corrosion and material degradation of insulation system, and a serious threat to the equipment. A model of three layers of PI film with air gap is presented to understand the influence of interface and voids on exploitation conditions such as strong electrical field, PD activity and charge movement. The analytical analysis, and experimental results are good agreement and show that the lose contact between interfaces accumulate more residual charges and in consequences increase the electric field intensity and accelerates internal discharges. These residual charges are trapped charges, injected by the electrodes has often same polarity, so the electric field in cavities increases significantly and thus partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) decreases. Contrary, number of PD discharge quantity increases due to interface. Interfacial polarization effect has opposite impact on electric field and PDIV as compare to void.

  • To investigate degradation procedure and life time of the oxidized PE and the unoxidized PE, alternative voltage is applied to the CIGRE Method-II (CM-II) electrode system, which is loaded artificial void, and measures the distribution of partial discharging generation. From the results, the samples etched by oxidation had wide degradation area of dielectric strength. Furthermore, discharge starting voltage was shifted to low voltage, the discharge generation frequency was high and consequently, the quantity of mean charge becomes small. Also, life time of the oxdized sample is shortened according as the oxidation time is longer.

  • In this study, the partial discharge degradation properties for 2-core PVC cable($2cores{\times}1.5mm^2$ cross section, length of 10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm) following immersion with the salt water that the 2%, 4%, 8% of NaCl is dissolved in 100 g of distilled water for 48 and 96 hours has been measured. The results of this study are as follows. When the degradation time in salt water of 2% NaCl is 48 hours, it found that the number of partial discharge increased as about 40 pps, 50 pps, 90 pps with increasing the length of cable to 10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm. In case the concentration and degradation time is same, the inception and extinction voltage decreased with increasing the length of cable. When the degradation time in salt water is 96 hours and the length of cable is 20 cm, it found that the number of partial discharge decreased as 3,000 pps, 500 pps, 100 pps with increasing the concentration of NaCl to 2%, 4%, 8%.

  • The exact partial discharge pulse should be measured in order to estimate the discharge source in the solid insulation and diagnose the degree of deterioration. Partial discharges generated in the insulation occur in the internal voids or at the edge of the insulation, have unique characteristics following the type and location. When external voltage is applied, Partial discharges occurred in the restrictively presented voids increase the quantity of electrical charge at the discharge onset voltage. The discharge characteristics have remained constant as space is filled by the impurity such as a compound of gases accompanied with discharge. In this study, How to design the insulation about the problems of the built-in diagnostics in the transformer is discussed by the interpretation of electric field.

  • Effect of Argon and Sulfur hexafloride in the transformer oil are experimented under non-uniform A.C. electric field. The result has shown that the corona frequency and corona charge quantity in liquid dielectrics were varied with gas condition in the oil and affected by the additives. SF$_{6}$ that has the effects of pressure and electrical negative characteristic is the most effective. The corona is considered to be the breakdown of bubble produced by gas contained in the oil or by dissociated ion of the oil molecules.s.
