  • We have studied electro-optical characteristics and stability of liquid crystal director depending on electrode patterning of common electrode on top substrate in patterned vertical alignment (PVA) mode. In the present studies, new type of common electrode pattern was suggested to enhance a dark state by reducing interference area due to data signal. According to the simulation result, PVA device with new common electrode pattern contributed to Improvement of an aperture ratio.

  • Patterned vertical alignment (PVA) mode requires multi-domain to exhibit wide viewing angle whereas the transmittance is sacrificed. To overcome the demerit, a fine pattern was formed at folded region in PVA Z-shape electrode structure. In the present work fine patterns were formed near domain boundary regions where the unwanted field direction which causes the LC to tilt down in unwanted direction exists. Thereby transmittance is improved near those fine patterns. This method is very simple and more cost-effective process than the other methods. In this article, we show the method of fine pattern formation and its influence on LC molecule in PVA mode with Z-shape electrode structure.

  • In this paper, electro-optical characteristic of Nematic Liquid crystal (LC) with varying temperature in different LCD modes, namely Fringe Field Switching (FFS), In-plane switching (IPS), and Patterned Vertical Alignment (PVA) modes are investigated and compared. Electro optic me asurements suggest that rate of change of transmission with temperature in FFS mode was lowest and much more thermally stable as compared to IPS and PVA m odes. However the electro-optical characteristic of patterned vertical alignment (PVA) mode was most affected by changing temperature. The measured threshold voltage was found to be much more thermally stable in FFS and IPS modes than that of PVA mode.

  • We investigated the improvement of viewing angle using a patterned double twisted (PDT) vertical-alignment (VA) cell mode on a homeotropic alignment layer. Good voltage-transmittance curves for negative dielectric anisotropic nematic liquid crystal (NLC) using the PDT-VA cell without a negative compensation film were obtained. The viewing angle of the PDT-VA cell without a negative compensation film was wider than that of a conventional VA cell.

  • A single-gap and single-gamma transflective liquid-crystal (LC) display using patterned vertical alignment (PVA) mode was designed. In the device, a vertical electric field drives a vertically aligned LC to tilt down to optimize polarization efficiency. Electrodes of transmissive and reflective area were patterned $22.5^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ with respect to the polarizer so that a tilt-down direction of the LC director was $22.5^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ in the reflective and transmissive regions, respectively. In the device, the cell gap was the same for both regions, and the gamma curve matched each other in both regions because tilt angle of LC director was the same according to the applied voltage. Moreover, the dark state was irrespective of the cell retardation value at normal direction, which was highly important in massive fabrications. The switching principle and electro-optic characteristics of the device are reported herein.

  • In this paper we propose a novel electrode structure for high transmittance in the Patterned Vertical Alignment (PVA) LC cell. We use the 'TechWiz LCD' for calculation of the director configuration and optical characteristics. We studied the area decreasing the transmittance through the electrode structure for wide viewing angle and proposed new electrode design to change LC director configuration in the area. We show the comparison of the calculated optical transmittance between the conventional PVA mode and the proposed PVA mode. From the results, we confirm that the optical transmittance of the proposed structure of the PVA cell becomes higher.

  • A symmetric-viewing inverse-twisted-nematic (ITN) liquid crystal display (LCD) with alternating alignment layers was developed using a stamping-assisted rubbing (SAR) technique. A patterned layer of a fluorinated acrylate polymer was transferred onto the first rubbed vertical-alignment layer prepared on a substrate by stamping. The fluorinated acrylate polymer provided a protective layer covering the first rubbed alignment layer during the second rubbing process, which promoted the vertical alignment of the LC molecules. The LC cell in the ITN geometry with two orthogonally rubbed alignment layers showed symmetric-viewing characteristics with fourfold symmetry. The SAR technique was shown to be a mask-free alignment method of producing multidomains for symmetric-viewing LCDs.
