  • The incidence and associated dental abnormalities of taurodontism were studied radiographically (panoramic view) in 1895 patients of deciduous dentition and 2167 patients of permanent dentition who had visited to the Department of Oral Radiology, Kyung Hee University in Korea. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The prevalence of taurodontism was 3.59% in the deciduous dentition group, and 1.8% in the permanent dentition group. 2. There was no definite sex difference in the deciduous dentition, and the permanent dentition group. The type of mesotaurodontism was predominent in the deciduous dentition group, and hypotaurodontism in the permanent dentition group. 4. The vast majority of this abnormalities had occurred in the mandibular 1st deciduous molar in the deciduous dentition group, and mandibular 2nd permanent molar in the permanent dentition group. 5. Of the cases with taurodontism, the deciduous dentition group revealed 95.6% bilaterally, and 82% bilaterally in the permanent dentition group. 6. Multiple teeth occurance, not single tooth only, were involved in 98.5% of the cases in the deciduous dentition group, and 82% in the permanent dentition group.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the interrelationship of the maxillary interincisal diastema, spacing and crowing to the type of superior labial frenum and the type of intermaxillary suture by analyzing histories, intraoral radiographs, orthopantomographs, intraoral slide films, and dental casts. The data for this study were compiled from 500 outpatients of the Department of Orthodontics, Infirmary of Dental College, Seoul National University. The following conculusions were obtained: 1. The occurrence of maxillary interincisal diastema in the permanent dentition decreased rapidly compared with that in the mixed dentition. And there was no sex difference in the occurrence of diastema in the both dentitions. 2. Frenum attachment remained relatively constant between the two dentitions but assumed a higher level in the permanent dentition than in the mixed dentition. 3. Except suture type D which was not yet fused completely, there was no significant difference in the distribution of suture type between the mixed dentition and the permanent dentition. 4. Frenum and suture type were highly related; frenum types 5 and 6 were associated with suture types III and V. 5. In the permanent dentition, frenum type 5 and 6 and suture types III and IV occurred more frequently in the spacing group than in the normal or crowding group. 6. The relationship between the diastema and frenum types 5 and 6 and sture types III and IV showed a strong correlation.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate possible correlation between the dental anomalies and site of cleft in cleft lip and palate. In this study, 142 patients who had cleft lip and/or cleft palate were examined. The results are as follows. 1. The incidence of missing tooth was high in the permanent dentition as compared to the incidence in the deciduous dentition. 2. There was not much difference of incidence of supernumerary tooth between deciduous and permanent dentition in the group of patients who had cleft lip and jaw with or without cleft palate. 3. In the group of patients who had cleft lip and jaw with or without cleft palate, the frequency of incidence of cleft sides was higer in unilateral than bilateral cases. And, incidence of left sides was higher than right sides. 4. The type of cleft between central incisor and canine with missing lateral incisor was most frequent in permanent dentition and the type of cleft between central and lateral incisor was most frequent in deciduous dentition. 5. The type of cleft associated with tooth position in deciduous dentition was not almost the same in the succeeding permanent dentition.

  • Early orthodontic treatment in growing children requires the removable orthodontic appliances. The removable orthodontic appliance can be used in the primary dentition and mixed dentition. The purposes of use of removable orthodontic appliance in prmary dentition or mixed dentition are the interception of skeletal or dental malocclusion, guiding the normal dentition, and retention after comprehensive orthodontic treatment. Therefore, it is needed to use the removable orthodontic appliance in children with malocclusion. This report presents cases of growing children with skeletal class II and III malocclusion treated with removable orthodontic appliance during mixed dentition and Multiloop Edgewise Arch Wire(MEAW) during permanent dentition. The results obtained through these cases were summarized as follows : 1. Removable orthodontic appliances guide normal dentition and skeletal growth in growing children. 2. Removable orthodontic appliances play an important role in intercepting malocclusion in mixed dentition before use of fixed orthodontic appliance. 3. MEAW can be applied to finishing stage of all cases and is effective in correction of occlusal plane, achievement of interdigitation, and control of dental inclination. 4. It is needed that removable appliances are used during mixed dentition through correct diagnosis and fixed appliance are used in permanent dentition.

  • The author measured the right and left craniofacial skeleton using posteroanterior cephalography of 124 male and 97 female subjects of ages ranging 2-6 years, 7-13 years and adult group on Korean. Statstical parameters were calculated by computer from the data. The results of the study were as follows. 1. In the male and female group of deciduous dentition, the right side measurements were slightly greater than the left side measurements, and generally male measurements were greater than female measurements. 2. In the both sex group of mixed dentition, the right side measurements were greater than the left side measurements, and in comparision of sex, the female recognized more growth, and development than male, especially on the cranial base, lateral maxilla, lower maxilla and dental region. 3. In the permanent dentition group, regardless of sex, the right side measurements were greater than the left side measurements, and in the sex difference, male was conspicuously greater than female on both sides measurements. 4. In the permanent dentition group, the asymmetry of the face was striking than deciduous dentition and mixed dentition group.

  • The purpose of this study was to clarify the palatal arch length, width and volume in the primary and permanent dentition. Samples were consisted of normal occlusion in the primary dentition(50 males and 50 females) and permanent dentition(43 males and 43 females). Their upper plaster casts were used and through 3-dimensional laser scanning(3D Scanner, DS4060, LDI, U.S.A.), cloud data, polygonization, section curve, loft surface and fit and horizontal plane were made for measuring the palatal arch length, width and volume(Surfacer 10.0, Imageware, U.S.A.). Correlation coefficients were calculated separately for males and females in each group(SPSS 10.0). The results were as follows : 1. Average distance from the fit plane to the points(tooth-tooth-palate) was greater in the permanent dentition than those of primary dentition. 2. Palatal volume was greater more than 3 times in the permanent dentition, especially it was greater in male compared to female with significance(p<0.05). 3. Palatal width of male was greater in the primary and permanent dentition but palatal length, only in the permanent dentition than that of female(P<0.05). 4. Correlation coefficients were statistically most significant between the palatal volume and size of posterior palatal width and total palatal length(r=0.401, r=0.450, r=0.678, r=0.654).

  • This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the difference in measurement between conventional orthodontic analysis and artificial intelligence orthodontic analysis in pediatric and adolescent patients aged 7 - 15 with the mixed and permanent dentition. A total of 60 pediatric and adolescent patients (30 mixed dentition, 30 permanent dentition) who underwent lateral cephalometric radiograph for orthodontic diagnosis were randomly selected. Seventeen cephalometric landmarks were identified, and 22 measurements were calculated by 1 examiner, using both conventional analysis method and deep learning-based analysis method. Errors due to repeated measurements were assessed by Pearson's correlation coefficient. For the mixed dentition group and the permanent dentition group, respectively, a paired t-test was used to evaluate the difference between the 2 methods. The difference between the 2 methods for 8 measurements were statistically significant in mixed dentition group: APDI, SNA, SNB, Mandibular plane angle, LAFH (p < 0.001), Facial ratio (p = 0.001), U1 to SN (p = 0.012), and U1 to A-Pg (p = 0.021). In the permanent dentition group, 4 measurements showed a statistically significant difference between the 2 methods: ODI (p = 0.020), Wits appraisal (p = 0.025), Facial ratio (p = 0.026), and U1 to A-Pg (p = 0.001). Compared with the time-consuming conventional orthodontic analysis, the deep learning-based cephalometric system can be clinically acceptable in terms of reliability and validity. However, it is essential to understand the limitations of the deep learning-based programs for orthodontic analysis of pediatric and adolescent patients and use these programs with the proper assessment.
