Effect of Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture Therapy on the severe pain back of the ear in patient diagnosed with Bell's palsy (안면신경마비 환자의 이후통(耳後痛)에 대한 봉약침 치험 2례)

  • Objective : This study was to report Bell's palsy patients with severe pain back of the ear treated by Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture therapy. Methods : The patients was treated by Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture therapy to relieve the severe pain back of the ear. Visual Analog Scale(VAS) was used as an outcome measurement. Results : After Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture therapy, VAS were decreased at all case. Conclusion : Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture therapy can be available for relieving severe pain back of the ear even inducing insomnia.

The Research Trends of Pharmacopuncture Therapy on Cervical Pain Caused by Traffic Accidents

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to comprehensively review Korean domestic studies and investigate the research trends of pharmacopuncture therapy on cervical pain caused by traffic accidents. Methods: Domestic studies between February 1999 and May 2020 from four Korean databases were searched with combinations of keywords 'cervical pain', 'traffic accident', 'whiplash injury', and 'pharmacopuncture'. Results: 17 studies were selected for review, including 7 randomized controlled trials, 5 retrospective observational studies, 3 case reports, and 2 non-randomized controlled trials. Each study was reviewed by published year, study type, types of pharmacopuncture solutions, selected acupuncture points, dosage of pharmacopuncture solutions, frequency of treatment, concurrent treatments, outcome measurements, and the effectiveness of pharmacopuncture therapy. The results are as follows: (1) It showed that the total number of published studies had increased slightly in the last 10 years compared to the previous decade. (2) The pharmacopuncture solutions used in the studies were in the following order: Bee-Venom (蜂毒), Jungsongouhyul (中性瘀血), Hwangryunhaedoktang (黃連解毒湯) and Soyeom (消炎). Frequently used acupuncture points were GB20, GV21, A-shi point, GV16, EX-B2, and SI15 in order. (3) The most commonly used total injection dosage was 1.0 cc at a time, and the frequency of treatment was twice a week. (4) Concurrent treatments such as acupuncture, herbal medication, physical therapy and Chuna manual therapy were performed in all 17 studies. (5) Pharmacopuncture therapy showed positive effects on cervical pain caused by traffic accidents in all 17 studies reviewed. Conclusion: Pharmacopuncture therapy was effective in cervical pain caused by traffic accidents in all 17 studies selected. Further studies will be needed using more larger scales and more objective data to confirm the effectiveness of pharmacopuncture therapy and to generalize its application.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the effect of Hwangryunhaedok-tang Pharmacopuncture Therapy on Seborrheic Dermatitis Methods : An author treated distillation of Hwangryunhaedok-tang Pharmacopuncture(0.8cc) on both LI20(Yenoghyang), SI18(Gwollyo), ST7(Hagwan) of patient's spots on the face suitable for acupuncture and examined variation of two Seborrheic Dermatitis cases Results : The Hwangryunhaedok-tang Pharmacopuncture Therapy was effective on amelioration of symptoms like flare, pricking and itching sense in Seborrheic Dermatitis Conclusions : The above result indicate that Hwangryunhaedok-tang Pharmacopuncture Therapy has an effect on Seborrheic Dermatitis, and an author consider that continuous clinical study will be needed in other Pharmacopuncture and Korean medical treatment.

Systematic Review of Soyeom Pharmacopuncture Therapy for Pain (임상에서 흔히 접하는 통증에 대한 소염약침요법의 체계적 문헌고찰)

  • Objectives To evaluate the evidence supporting the effectiveness of Soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy for Pain. Methods We conducted search across 6 electronic databases (Pubmed, CAJ, Oasis, RISS, DBPIA and KoreanTK) and 2 journals to find clinical trials that used Soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy as treatment for pain. The methodological quality of Randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias (RoB) tool, while NRCTs (Non-Randomized controlled clinical trials) were assessed using the Risk of Bias Assessment tool for Non-randomized Study (RoBANS) tool. Results Among 75 articles that were searched, 5 RCTs and 2 NRCTs were finally selected. Among 7 selected studies, all studies showed that Soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy has significant effect on Pain. Conclusions Our systematic review found encouraging but limited evidence of Soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy for Pain. We recommend clinical trials which compare the effectiveness of Soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy with other pharmacopuncture therapies to clarify the effectiveness of Soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy from other pharmacopuncture therapies.

Effects of Hominis Placenta Pharmacopuncture and Electroacupuncture Neuroprotection in Contused Spinal Cord of Rats (척수손상 흰쥐에서 자하거 약침과 침전기 자극이 신경성장인자 발현에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of Hominis placenta pharmacopuncture treatment and electroacupuncture therapy on the functional recovery and histological change, protein expression in spinal cord injury(SCI) rats. Experimental groups were divided into the Group I(normal control rat), Group II(Non-treatment after spinal cord injury induction), Group III(Hominis placenta pharmacopuncture treatment after SCI induction), Group IV (Electroacupuncture therapy after SCI induction), Group V(Hominis placenta pharmacopuncture treatment and electroacupuncture therapy after SCI induction). After operation, rats were tested at modified Tarlov test at 1 to 3 days with divided into 4 groups, and motor behavior test(BBB locomotor rating scale, Grid walk test) was examined at 3, 7, 14, and 21 days. For the observation of damage change and size of the organized surface in muscle and spinal cord, histopathological studies were performed at 21 days by H & E stain, and BDNF & NT-3 protein expression studies were performed at 21 days. Acco rding to the results, Hominis placenta pharmacopuncture treatment and electroacupuncture therapy can play a role in facilitating recovery of locomotion following spinal cord injury. Specially, Hominis placenta pharmacopuncture treatment and electroacupuncture combimed therapy after SCI induction was most improvement in functional recovery, BDNF, and NT-3 protein synthesis.

Proposal of Self Targeting Therapy of Mountain Ginseng Pharmacopuncture (산삼약침의 자가치료능에 대한 제언)

  • Objectives & Methods: This research may accounts for Self Targeting Therapy (STT) which is a peculiar operation of Mountain Ginseng Pharmacopuncture. The objectives include analysis of its mechanism and reporting of clinical cases. Results: 1. STT of Mountain Ginseng Pharmacopuncture refers to the function of curing and making a diagnosis of the disease by oneself. 2. The mechanism of STT is to pursue the latent illness and make the remedial action by oneself. In this process, the symptom of latent disease is outwardly expressed. 3. The most popular symptom expressed is manifestation of pecular sensation along the specific meridians. Then followed headache, dizziness, powerless and etc. Diverse symptoms can be expressed by a patient. 4. If the revealed symptoms are carefully observed, the cause of the disease or the patient state can be diagnosed easily. Conclusion: The mechanism of STT of Mountain Ginseng Pharmacopuncture can be a great asset in clinical trials. Other studies on STT of Mountain Ginseng Pharmacopuncture should be followed in the future.

Trend of Pharmacopuncture Therapy for Treating Cervical Disease in Korea

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze trends in domestic studies on pharmacopuncture therapy for treating cervical disease. Methods: This study was carried out on original copies and abstracts of theses listed in databases or published until July 2014. The search was made on the Oriental medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System (OASIS) the National Digital Science Library (NDSL), and the Korean traditional knowledge portal. Search words were 'pain on cervical spine', 'cervical pain', 'ruptured cervical disk', 'cervical disc disorder', 'stiffness of the neck', 'cervical disk', 'whiplash injury', 'cervicalgia', 'posterior cervical pain', 'neck disability', 'Herniated Nucleus Pulposus (HNP)', and 'Herniated Intervertebral Disc (HIVD)'. Results: Twenty-five clinical theses related to pharmacopuncture were selected and were analyzed by year according to the type of pharmacopuncture used, the academic journal in which the publication appeared, and the effect of pharmacopuncture therapy. Conclusion: The significant conclusions are as follows: (1) Pharmacopunctures used for cervical pain were Bee venom pharmacopuncture, Carthami-flos pharmacopuncture, Scolopendra pharmacopuncture, Ouhyul pharmacopuncturen, Hwangryun pharmacopuncture, Corpus pharmacopuncture, Soyeom pharmacopuncture, Hwangryunhaedoktang pharmacopuncture, Shinbaro phamacopuncture. (2) Randomized controlled trials showed that pharmacopuncture therapy combined with other methods was more effective. (3) In the past, studies oriented toward Bee venom pharmacopuncture were actively pursued, but the number of studies on various other types of pharmacopuncture gradually began to increase. (4) For treating a patient with cervical pain, the type of pharmacopuncture to be used should be selected based on the cause of the disease and the patient's condition.

Comparison of Ultrasound Guided Soyeom Pharmacopuncture Therapy Effect and Unguided Soyeom Pharmacopuncture Therapy Effect on Cervical Facet Joint of Acute Cervical Pain Patient Caused by Traffic Accidents: A Retrospective Study (교통사고로 유발된 급성 경추통 환자의 경추 후관절에 시행한 초음파 유도하 치료군과 비유도 치료군의 소염 약침 치료 효과 비교: 후향적 관찰 연구)

  • Objectives To compare the therapeutic effect of ultrasound guided soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy and unguided soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy on cervical facet joint of patient who have cervical pain caused by traffic accidents. Methods The study was planned as a retrospective study that analyzes the patient's medical records. We analyzed medical records of 20 patients with acute cervical pain caused by traffic accidents from April 1, 2022 to May 31, 2022. 10 patients (Group A) were treated ultrasound guided soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy on cervical facet joint, 10 patients (Group B) were treated unguided soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy on cervical facet joint. We used visual analogue scale (VAS) and neck disability index (NDI) to evaluate improvements in cervical functions and pain, five point Likert scale to estimate patient's satisfaction. We used the IBM SPSS Statistics version 25 program (IBM Co., Armonk, NY, USA) for statistical analysis. Results Group A showed a significant decrease in the VAS on the 5th day of the soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy (p=0.001). However, there was no statistically significant difference of VAS between two groups (p=0.142). Group A showed significant decrease in the NDI on the 5th day of the therapy (p=0.002). Also, there was statistically significant difference on NDI between two groups (p=0.018). Difference of five point Likert scale between two groups was not statistically significant (p=0.407). Conclusions In patients of acute cervical pain caused by traffic accidents, ultrasound guided soyeom pharmacopuncture therapy on cervical facet joint showed significant efficacy on reduction of neck disability compared with unguided therapy.

The Effect of Shinbaro and Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture in Treating Lumbar Disc Herniations (요추간판 탈출증에 대한 신바로약침과 봉약침의 치료효과 비교 연구)

  • Objectives : This study was performed to compare the effects of Shinbaro pharmacopuncture therapy and bee venom pharmacopuncture therapy in lumbar disc herniation Methods : We compared treatment efficacy of 12 patients with Shinbaro pharmacopuncture therapy and 10 patients with bee venom pharmacopuncture therapy, all of whom were diagnosed with lumbar disc herniation using computed tomography(CT) or magnetic resonance imaging(MRI). We performed a retrospective comparison and analysis during the course of 21 days since admission. To evaluate the treatment efficacy, we recorded the temperatures of the opposite back, hip, and legs with visual analog scale(VAS, back and legs), pain rating scale(PRS), Oswestry disability index(ODI) and digital infrared thermal imaging(DITI) based on patients' medical records. Results : Both treatments were effective in reducing pain and improving functions for lumbar disc herniation patients in terms of VAS, PRS, ODI, DITI. Shinbaro pharmacopuncture group showed slightly better results than the bee venom pharmacopuncture group, but the difference was not significant. Conclusions : For the treatment of lumbar disc herniation, it is suggested that Shinbaro pharmacopuncture therapy is thought to be as effective as bee venom pharmacopuncture therapy without side effects, although further study would be necessary.

  • Objective : This study is to report the effect that taken by using oriental treatment on the patient with Fibromyalgia Syndrome(FMS). Methods : We have observed this case of patient treated by Acupuncture therapy, pharmacopuncture therapy and herbal medication. Results : There was improvement in condition of the patient who had Fibromyalgia Syndrome(FMS) after treated by using oriental treatment. Conclusion : Oriental treatments such as Acupuncture therapy, Pharmacopuncture therapy and herbal medication can be effective for the Fibromyalgia Syndrome(FMS).
