  • The CellCaSi, a porous silicate material, was tested for the removal of phosphorus (P as phosphate) in water. The effect of the CellCaSi was investigated on the basis of both particle size (under 1,2, and 4 mm) and added amount (0, 1, 2.5, 5, and 10 g/1) of the CellCaSi. The removal efficiency of phosphorus was highest with a particle size of under 1 mm and also increased with an increasing amount of the CellCaSi. The pH change showed little effect on the phosphorus removal of the CellCaSi. The calcium ion was eluted from the CellCaSi into the water, while the aluminium and iron were not. The eluted calcium ion was combined with dissolved phosphorus and then precipitated. The highest removal efficiency of phosphorus was obtained by the combined addition of the CellCaSi, calcium chloride, and ferric chloride. That is, the phosphorus concentrations of 0.10 and 1.0 mg/1 decreased to 0.03 and 0.47 mg/l by the addition of the CellCaSi (1 g/l), calcium ion (30 mg/l), and ferric ion (1 mg/l) at day 8 after treatment. The water qualities at the end of the experiment were as follows: pH was 8.1 and conductivity was 318 ${\mu}$S/cm (a registered maximum conductivity of 500${\mu}$S/cm for raw and potable wafers).

  • Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to study the conversion of sludge from conventional activated sludge to nitrogen-phosphorus removal sludge using two types of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) systems, a conventional SBR and sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR). The nitrogen and phosphorus removal characteristics were similar between SBR and SBBR and the removal efficiencies were very low when the influent TOC concentrations were low. The nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies in SBR were 96% and 77.5%, respectively, which were higher than those in SBBR (88% and 42.5%) at the high influent TOC concentration. In SBBR, the simultaneous nitrification-denitrification was occurred because of the biofilm process. The variations of pH, DO concentration and ORP were changed as the variation of influent TOC concentration both in SBR and SBBR and their periodical characteristics were cleary shown at the high influent TOC concentration. Especially, the pH, DO concentration and ORP inflections, were cleary occurred in SBR compared with SBBR.

  • Specific growth rate and removal rate of nitrogen and phosphorus of Chlorella sorokiniana, Chlorella vulgaris, Senedesmus dimorphus those are able to metabolite mixotrophically and have high nitrogen and phosphorus removal capacity were examined. Based on the results, one microalgae was selected and conducted experiments to identify the operating factors such as pH and aeration rate. The specific growth rate and phosphorus removal rate of C. sorokiniana significantly presented as $0.29day^{-1}$ and 1.65 mg-P/L/day, while the nitrogen removal rate was high as 12.7 mg-N/L with C. vulgaris. C. sorokiniana was chosen for appropriate microalgae to applying for wastewater treatment system and was cultured in pH ranged 3 to 11. High specific growth rate and removal rate of nitrogen and phosphorus were shown at pH 7 as $0.71day^{-1}$, 7.61 mg-N/L/day, and 1.24 mg-P/L/day, respectively. The specific growth rate examined with aeration rate between 0 and 2 vvm (vol/vol-min) highly presented as $1.2day^{-1}$ with 1.5 ~ 2 vvm, while the nitrogen removal rate was elevated with 0.5 vvm as 9.43 mg-N/L/day.

  • The 5-stage biological nutrient removal (BNR) process with step feed system showed a very stable organic carbon and nutrient removal efficiency ($87\%\;COD\,;79\%\;nitrogen,\;and\;87\%$ phosphorus) for an operation period of 2 years. In each stage at the pilot plant, microbial communities, which are important in removing nitrogen and phosphorus, were investigated using fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) and 165 rDNA characterization. All tanks of 5-stage sludge had a similar composition of bacterial communities. The totat cell numbers of each reactor were found to be around $2.36-2.83{\times}10^9$ cells/ml. About $56.5-62.0\%$ of total 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindol (DAPI) cells were hybridized to the bacterial-specific probe EUB388. Members of ${\beta}$-proteobacteria were the most abundant proteobacterial group, accounting for up to $20.6-26.7\%$. The high G+C Gram-positive bacterial group and Cytophaga-Flexibacter cluster counts were also found to be relatively high. The beta subclass proteobacteria did not accumulate a large amount of polyphosphate. The proportion of phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs) in the total population of the sludge was almost $50\%$ in anoxic-1 tank. The high G+C Gram-positive bacteria and Cytophaga-Flexibacter cluster indicate a key role of denitrifying phosphorus-accumulating organisms (dPAOs). Both groups might be correlated with some other subclass of proteobacteria for enhancing nitrogen and phosphorus removal in this process.

  • This study aimed to obtain quantitative data for WWTP operators in phosphorus removal process. This was done by reviewing and comparing phosphorus removal efficiency(%), coagulants dosage(Al/P and $Al_2O_3$(mg/L)), sludge production($kg/m^3$), and operation cost($won/m^3$) of start-up and normal operation data. Phosphorus removal efficiency of all tertiary treatment process was up to 70 ~ 89 % in start-up and normal operation. Average molar ratio(Al/P) was similar as 5 in both operations, but average coagulants dosage (mg/L) of start-up (8.5 mg/L) was higher than normal operation (6.2 mg/L). Average operation cost was higher for start-up ($33.6won/m^3$) than normal operation ($28.4won/m^3$), while electricity cost required for the normal operation ($9.0won/m^3$) was higher by $3.5won/m^3$.

  • The removal affect of nitrogen and phosphorus were analyzed using a Acorus calamus var. angustatus. The nutrient concentration, growth stage of plants and the storage time of polluted water were considered. The results of this study were as follows: after an hour the content of nitrogen and phosphorus were considerably reduced in the Acorus calamus var. angustatus, while after two-four hours the rate of reduction was extremely low. This situation was the same in the early growth stage, growing stage and highest growth stage of the plant. The removal rate of nitrogen and phosphorus with the Acorus calamus var. angustatus was higher, when these two minerals remained in high levels of water. The Acorus calamus var. angustatus was more effective to remove nitrogen than that of phosphorus. The plant removed the most nitrogen and phosphorus when in the highest growth stage, but this was not clear in the growth stages. The removal rate was higher, in the case of moving polluted water to other plants after two days, than in the case of four days of growth in the same plants.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics and performance of nitrogen and phosphorus removal system, Daewoo Nutrients Removal(DNR) system, and to find out the operating parameter for the system. During the study, $10m^3$ pilot plant was operated for the demonstration experiment and the primary effluent was taken from K domestic sewage treatment plant. The TN in the influent had been removed to approximately 70% through the nitrfication in the oxic tank and the denitrfication in the anoxic tank and the $PO_4-P$ and TP in the influent had been removed to 85% and 83% through anaerobic reaction and oxic reaction. The BOD and SS removal rate were 85 to 95% through the system. As the results, the values of effluent BOD, SS and slouble phosphorus were lower than A/O and $A^2/O$ processes. The SPRR (specific phosphorus release rate) at the anaerobic state of DNR system was ranged from 2.2 to 2.6mg SP/g VSS/h. The nutrient removal efficieny of the DNR system in view of the characteristics of the domestic sewage was higher than the pre-established A/O and $A^2/O$ processes. Finally, we believe that the DNR system was superior to the processes deveolped recently.
