An experimental study for the comparison of nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies between $A^2/O$ and modified Phostrip (M-Phostrip process) were carried out with bench-scale reactors. In case of nitrogen removal efficiencies both of processes showed similar ones when influent organic loadings were high. However, M-phostrip process was more effective than $A^2/O$ at low organic loadings. This is why M-phostrip process consumes the whole mass of influent organics as a carbon sources for denitrification in anoxic reactor but the anoxic reactor of $A^2/O$ process utilizes the residual carbon followed by consumming a part of influent carbon for phosphorus release in anaerobic reactor. $A^2/O$ process required the influent COD/T-P and COD/TKN ratios were more than 56 and 10, respectively, to take place the phosphorus release in anaerobic process and phosphorus uptake in oxic process. However, the luxury uptake of phosphorus in M-phostrip process was not affected by influent COD/T-P and COD/TKN ratios and the adverse effect of nitrate in return sludge introduced to the p-stripper from the 2nd clarifier was not significant due to the configurational advantage of the p-stripper.
A blast furnace slag(BFS) has been used as a filter medium for the treatment of domestic waste waters during the period of 9-month. More than 90% of phosphorus was removed while the hardness of the treated water increased by 5 times and the pH was significantly raised from 6.8 to 10.8. The high hardness and pH of the treated water indicated dissolution of BSF by the sewage. The experimental results suggest that BFS could be utilized for the removal of phosphorus in the waste water treatment plant using aquatic plants and gravels.
Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to compare the performance of two types of sequencing batch reactor(SBR) systems, anoxic-oxic-anoxic-oxic $((AO)_2)$ SBR and anoxic-oxic-anoxic $(A_2O)$ SBR on the biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Also, the profiles of DO and pH in reactors were used to monitor the biological nutrient removal in two SBRs. The break point in the pH and DO curves at the oxic period coincided with the end of nitrifying activity at about 1 h 30 min in oxic phase, and the change in pH appears to be related to nitrate concentration. The TOC removal efficiency in $A_2O$ SBR was higher than that in $(AO)_2$ SBR. The denitrification was completed at the influent period. The 2nd non-aeration and aeration periods were not necessary for the nitrogen and phosphorus removal because of the low influent TOC concentration in this study. The release and uptake of phosphorus in $AO_2$ SBR was much higher than that in $(AO)_2SBR.$ In order to uptake more phosphorus, the 1st aeration period in $A_2O$ SBR should be prolonged.
This study examined the removal efficiency of the nitrogen and phosphorus in order to compensate for the combined process of ATAD(Autothermal Thermophilic Aaerobic Digestion) and EGSB(Expended Granular Sludge Bed), which are treatment methods for livestock wastewater, by introducing SBR(Sequencing Batch Reactor) as post-treatment process. The analysis on the treatment efficiency of each operation mode showed that, in the case of T-N, the treatment efficiency were 67.1% and 74.2% for Run-1 and Run-2, respectively, and in the case of T-P, the values were 71.2 and 74.1, respectively, which are indicating that the treatment efficacy is higher in the condition of Run-1, in which the time period of Anoxic and Aerobic segments were increased. In addition, the result of analyzing removal characteristics of nitrogen and phosphorus by Influx load showed that removal efficiency of nitrogen was better in the case of high influx load than in the case of low influx load. Regardless of Influx load, phosphorus showed constant influx concentration, so that removal efficiency of phosphorus was influenced littler by Influx load than that of nitrogen. This study also fed methanol as an external carbon source and performed experiment to induce denitrification under anoxic condition by using nitrate among nitrogen compounds of SBR reactor, and the results showed that intermittent feeding was more effective in Nitrogen Removal than composite feeding.
Eutrophication caused by the excessive supply of phosphorus to water has been considered as one of the most important environmental problems. In this study, the titanium mesostrcture, which was prepared with the template of different surfactant, was tested to confirm the applicability as an adsorbent for phosphorus removal and evaluate the phosphorus removal efficiency. X-ray diffraction analysis, phosphorus adsorption istotherm and kinetic test were performed for the titanium mesostructure, synthesized at various base material/surfactant molar ratio and with different surfactant templates. From the results, we found that mesostructure was synthesized at the base material/surfactant molar ratio of 1/0.25 was most uniformly and clearly formed and thus the adsorption capacity was also maximized.
With the population growth and industrialization, the characteristics of discharged waste water and sewage have become more diverse. The removal of phosphorus (P) in the wastewater is essential for the prevention of eutrophication in the river and stream. This study was performed in order to estimate the field application of the Bacillus sp. 3434 BRRJ. Bacillus sp. 3434 BRRJ was cultured in the raw wastewater and synthetic medium at the 5 L reactor. The best optimum conditions for P removal by Bacillus sp. 3434BRRJ in the synthetic medium at the 5 L reactor were as follows: temperature, $30^{\circ}C$; P concentration, 20 mg/L; carbon sources, glucose + acetate (1:1); oxygen concentration, alternatively anaerobic and aerobic conditions. P removal efficiency under the optimum condition was 89.4%. In case of wastewater, P removal efficiency was 95.5% under controlled at $30^{\circ}C$. Through this study we confirmed that P removal by Bacillus sp. 3434BRRJ in case of wastewater was as effective as the synthetic medium. It is considered that Bacillus sp. 3434 BRRJ can be applied to the treatment of wastewater in order to biologically remove P from the wastewater on a large scale.
In this study, a novel phosphorus removal filter made of brass scrubber with higher porosity of over 96% was fabricated and evaluated. The brass scrubber was surface-modified to form copper hydroxide on the surface of the brass, which could be a phosphate removal filter for advanced wastewater treatment because the phosphates could be removed by the ion exchange with hydroxyl ions of copper hydroxide. The evaluation of phosphate removal was performed under the conditions of the batch type in wastewater and continuous type through filters. Filter recycling was also evaluated with retreatment of the surface modification process. The phosphate was rapidly removed within a very shorter contact time by the surface-modified brass scrubber filter, and the phosphate mass of 1.57 mg was removed per gram of the filter. The possibility of this surface-modified brass scrubber filter for phosphorus removal was shown without undesirable sludge production of existing chemical phosphorus removal techniques, and we feel that it would be very meaningful as a new wastewater treatment.
Space separation method that use independent reactor for nitrification and other reactor for denitrification has been commonly used for biological nitrogen removal process like $A^2O$ process. However, this method needs large space and complicate pipelines and time separation method such as SBR process have a difficulty in continuous treatment. Thus biological nitrogen removal process which is capable of continuous treatment, easy opeation and space saving is urgently required. In this research, submerged moving media was used for a biofilm process and suspended sludge was used for biological nitrogen removal at the same time. In particular DO environment by controlling air flow rate was investigated for simultaneous nitrification/denitrification. Total nitrogen removal in aeration rate more than $67L/min{\cdot}m^3$ showed 51~53% and rose to 65%, 70% and 78% in $50L/min{\cdot}m^3$, $58L/min{\cdot}m^3$ and $25L/min{\cdot}m^3$ respectively. Total phosphorus removal was very low about 10~20% more than $67L/min{\cdot}m^3$ aeration rates. But total phosphorus removal roses when reduces aeration rate by $58L/min{\cdot}m^3$ low and it showed total phosphorus removal of 72% in aeration rate $25L/min{\cdot}m^3$.
The aims of this study is to examine the effects of the changes in HRT(Hydraulic Retention Time) and media charge in a water-mill, among other operation factors, on the nitrogen and phosphorus removal in order to use up-flow anaerobic reactors, anoxic reactors and water-mill aerobic reactors for sewage treatment. The extension of HRT improved the nitrogen removal efficiency, however the removal pattern was constant regardless of HRT. The removal of phosphorus was constant (80%-90%) regardless of the change in HRT. The removal rate with change in influx load varied such that at the OLR (Organic Load Rate) of 1-3 kg/d, the T-N removal efficiency was 80.7%-88.9% and the T-P removal efficiency was 82.9%-89.3% while at the NLR (Nitrogen Loading Rate) of 0.108-0.156 kg/d the removal efficiencies were 80.7-88.9% (T-N) and 82.9-89.3% (T-P). The analyses of the nitrogen and phosphorous removal characteristics with the C/N and C/P ratio showed that the mean T-N removal rate was 88% at the C/N ratio of 1.2-2.6, and that the mean T-P removal rate was 86% at the C/P ratio of 7.2-14.1. Also, the analysis of nitrogen and phosphorous removal characteristics were analyzed in relation to media charge. The comparison between with and without media charge in the water-mill showed that while the nitrogen removal efficiencies were 86-94% and 85-89% respectively, the difference of phosphorous removal efficiencies were between the two conditions was not significant, thus it suggested that the media charge has less effect on the removal efficiency of phosphorous compared to that of nitrogen.
