Prevention of Lower Eyelid Complications Caused by a Subciliary Approach: Temporary Lower Eyelid Suspension (속눈썹밑 접근법에 의한 아래눈꺼풀 합병증의 예방: 일시적 아래눈꺼풀 걸기술)

  • Purpose: Subciliary approaches to orbitozygomatic fractures have high incidence of complications such as scleral show and ectropion. Abnormal rearrangement of eyelid flaps may be a very important factor to induce abnormal cicatrical and consequent contracture. To prevent this problem, we used temporary lower eyelid suspension. Methods: A total of two hundred five patients were investigated for lower eyelid complication of orbitozygomatic fractures that underwent reconstruction with subciliary approach. The lower eyelid margin was pulled up toward the forehead using lower eyelid suspension suture to stretch the lower lid flaps. The lid suspension was maintained for one day after surgery. Results: The complications of the lower eyelid were in 15 cases(7.3%); seven cases(3.4%) of visible depressed scar, three cases(1.4%) of scleral show, two cases(1%) of ectropion, two cases(1%) of conjunctival swelling and one case(0.5%) of hematoma. Conclusions: The lower eyelid suspension seems to allow adhering lid flap in proper anatomical position and in the status of the maximal stretch and consequently preventing the severe complications such as scleral show and ectropion caused by scar contraction after subciliary approach.

  • Naso-orbito-ethmoidal (NOE) fractures are complicated fractures of the mid-face. The treatment of NOE fractures is challenging and a comprehensive treatment strategy is required. We introduce a case of NOE fracture treated with open reduction and suspension sutures. A 28-year-old woman presented with a unilateral NOE fracture. To reduce the frontal process of the maxilla, a suspension suture was made by pulling the fragment using a double arm suture via a transcaruncular incision. The suture thread was placed in the horizontal plane. Another suspension suture on the inferior orbital rim assisted reduction procedure, and they passed through the overlying skin. The reduction alignment could be finely adjusted by tightening the transcutaneous suture threads while checking the degree of bone alignment through the subciliary incision. The two suture threads were suspended using a thermoplastic nasal splint. An additional skin incision on the medial canthal area, which would have resulted in a scar, could be avoided. Four months postoperatively, computed tomography showed an accurate and stable reduction. The patient was satisfied with her aesthetic appearance, and functional deficits were not present.

Development of Plastic Suspension System for Automotive Seat (자동차 시트용 플라스틱 서스펜션 시스템 개발)

  • This study aims to develop the plastic suspension assembly which is installed on inside of vehicle seat and supports passenger's back to provide the comfortable feeling. This design is the suspension structure to support the back equally and assemble seat back frame and plastic suspension effectively. The parts of suspension are designed by considering the property of body pressure distribution. As analysis values are approached to measured values by comparing the deformations in the cases of existed spring suspension and developed plastic suspension, the optimum design can be established.

  • This study investigates the plastic suspension assembly which is installed on inside of vehicle seat and support passenger's back to supply the comfortable ride performance. It aims to develop the structural design in order to support driver's back uniformly and assemble seat back frame with plastic suspension effectively. The part of suspension is designed by considering the body pressure distribution of driver and it has the same size as the practical model on simulation analysis. It is confirmed that the analysis result of plastic suspension approaches the practical measured values and the better body pressure distribution can be obtained as compared with the existing wire type.

Experimental and theoretical behaviour analysis of steel suspension members subjected to tension and bending

  • Steel suspension members subjected to tension and bending offer an economical and efficient alternative for many structural problems. This paper is concerned with the elastic and elastic-plastic behaviour of suspension members with bending stiffness subjected to vertical point and uniformly distributed loads. An experimental study is described which focuses on the response of three suspension members with various T-shaped steel hot rolled sections and geometric configurations. The tests enable direct assessment of the influence of a key parameter such as the sag-to-span ratio on the response of suspension members. Detailed nonlinear finite-element models are generated to provide a tool for theoretical analyses and to facilitate further understanding of the behaviour. Results demonstrate that experimentally obtained responses can generally be closely predicted numerically because there are relatively good agreements between finite element and tests results. The results and observations of subsequent numerical parametric studies offer an insight into the key factors that govern the behaviour of suspension members with bending stiffness in the elastic-plastic range.

Collodial Properties and Acid Consuming Capacity of Hydrous Aluminum Oxide Suspension (제산제 알루미나수화물의 콜로이드성과 제산능)

  • Rheological, colloidal and micromeritical properties were followed to investigate aging mechanisms of hydrous aluminum oxide suspension using Zeta-meter systems, BET adsorption apparatus, Master sizer and electronmicroscope. The results indicate that hydrous aluminum oxide suspension revealed plastic flow with thixotropy. The viscosity, thixotropy and yield value were increased with increasing concentration. During aging process, the viscosity and thixotropic index were increased by an addition of glycerin, however, sorbitol stabilized aging process of the suspension being accompanied with growth of particle size and reduction in specific surface area, pore area and pore volume, and consistency. Diminution of adsorptive power of the particles was also protected by addition of sorbitol to hydrous aluminum oxide suspension. From these results, one of aging mechanism of hydrous aluminum oxide suspension assumed growth and/or crystallization of colloidal particles in aqueous suspension.

Correction of Lip Canting Using Bioabsorbables during Orthognathic Surgery

  • Lip canting is associated with facial asymmetry, and is one of the most challenging problems in surgical correction of facial deformities. The author corrected lip canting using bioabsorbable devices during orthognathic surgery. Soft tissue suspension procedures were performed on four patients with facial asymmetry. Lip lines improved for all patients. Over an observation period of five years, no complications were noted, nor did any late relapse develop. Furthermore, as time past, the effect of the Endotine suspension procedure increased probably due to induction of fibrosis on surrounding soft tissues.

Seismic damage of long span steel tower suspension bridge considering strong aftershocks

  • The residual capacity against collapse of a main shock-damaged bridge can be coupled with the aftershock ground motion hazard to make an objective decision on its probability of collapse in aftershocks. In this paper, a steel tower suspension bridge with a main span of 2000 m is adopted for a case-study. Seismic responses of the bridge in longitudinal and transversal directions are analyzed using dynamic elasto-plastic finite displacement theory. The analysis is conducted in two stages: main shock and aftershocks. The ability of the main shock-damaged bridge to resist aftershocks is discussed. Results show that the damage caused by accumulated plastic strain can be ignored in the long-span suspension bridge. And under longitudinal and transversal seismic excitations, the damage is prone to occur at higher positions of the tower and the shaft-beam junctions. When aftershocks are not large enough to cause plastic strain in the structure, the aftershock excitation can be ignored in the seismic damage analysis of the bridge. It is also found that the assessment of seismic damage can be determined by superposition of damage under independent action of seismic excitations.

  • Recently, many solution have been suggested to development of plastic products. Among many manufacturing technologies for plastic parts, the injection molding process is very attractive because of its low production cost and short cycle time. In this paper, the plastic ball seat of a ball joint, one of the essential components for automotive suspension or steering system, was studied to enhance its mechanical performance and durability by using PA66 that is reinforced polymeric plastic resin. But ball seat has some trouble in manufacture process. And strength of molded part is not enough to use. For the quality stabilization and reliability of injection molded parts, we designed the mold cavities through analytical simulation software and tested the mechanical performance for the injection molded ball-seat parts. After modification, tensile strength increases by about $13.5\%$. Strength and quality stabilization is improved.

  • When spring of the suspension is exerted by an external load, a car should be designed to prevent predictable damages and designed for a ride comfort. We used experiments design to design VON-MISES STRESS and K, a constant, of spring of suspension which is installed in a car as a goal level. We analyzed the result from Edison's Elastic - Plastic Analysis SW(CSD_EPLAST) by setting D, d, n as external diameter of coil, internal diameter of coil, the number of total coil respectively. The experiment design let the outcome be as Full-second order by using Box-Behnken which is one of response surface methods. Experimented and analyzed results based on the established experiments design, We found out design parameter which has desired VON-MISES STRESS and the constant K. Additionally, we predicted life time of when the external load was exerted by repeated load by using fatigue equation, and verification of plastic deformation has also been made. Additionally we interpreted a model, which is formed by optimized design parameter, with linear analysis and non-linear analysis, at the same time we also analyzed plastic deformation with the values from the both models. Finally, we predicted fatigue life of optimized model by using fatigue estimation theory and also evaluated a ride comfort with oscillation analysis.
